ThecityofMadinah

§ ThecityofMadinahwasoriginallyknownasYathrib,anoasiscitydatingasfarbackasthe6thcenturyBCE.DuringthewarbetweentheJewsandRomansinthethirdcenturyCE,manyJewsfledJerusalemandmigratedtotheirancestralplaceofYathrib(presentMadinah).NerosentamassiveRomanforceunderPetraLenidastoMadinah to massacre the Jews in 213 CE. A community survived and by the time the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) hadmigratedtherewasalargeJewishpresencearoundthecity.

§ TheJewswereeagerlywaitingforthearrivalofaprophetwho,accordingtotheirscriptures,wouldappearinMadinah.TheyusedtotauntthelocalArabsthatwhenhedidarrive,accordingtotheirprophesies,theJewswould destroy the pagans as the ancient people of Aad and Thamud had been destroyed for theiridolatry.However,whentheyrealizedthatthefinalprophetwaschosenamongtheArabsratherthanfromtheJewstheirpridegotthebetterofthemandtheyrejectedhimeventhoughastheQuranmentions(in2:146)theyrecognizedhimastheyrecognizetheirsons.Inspiteofthis,thereweresomeJewswhoembracedIslam,most notablyHussain bin Salam, one of theirmost learnedRabbis. TheProphet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) changedhis name toAbdullahbinSalam.

§ The city ofMadinahwas not unfamiliar to the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) when he emigrated. His father AbdullahwasburiedthereandwhenhewassixyearsoldhehadtravelledtherewithhismotherAminahandtheirdevotedslavegirlBarakah(latertobeknownasUmmeAyman).Inlaterlifeherecountedhowhehadlearnedtoswiminapoolwhichbelongedtohiskinsmenwithwhomtheyhadstayed,andhowtheboystaughthimtoflyakite.However,notlongaftertheyhadsetoutforthereturnjourneyhismotherfellveryill,anddiedafewdayslateratAbwa, not far fromYathribwhere shewas buried. Barakahdidwhat she could to console the boy, nowdoublyanorphanandbroughthimbacktoMakkah.

§ Aboutayearbeforethemigration,theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)haddispatchedMus’abbinUmair( ھنعهللايضر )onamissiontopropagateIslam(Tableegh)tothepeopleofMadinah.ManyoftheAnsarbecameMuslimsathishands.

§ Madinahis210miles(340km)northofMakkah.AtthetimeoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)itwasapproximatelythesizeofthepresentmasjidandthesurroundingwhitetiledarea.

§ NarratedAnas( ھنعهللايضر ):“WhenevertheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)returnedfromajourneyandobservedthewallsofMadinah,hewouldmakehismountgofast,andifhewasonananimalhewouldmakeitgallopbecauseofhisloveforMadinah”[Bukhari].

§ TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)said:“Forthebeliever,Madinahisthebestplace.Ifonlytheycouldunderstandit’svirtuefully,theywouldneverleaveit,andwhoeverdepartsfromMadinah,havingbecomedisenchantedwithit,Allahwillsendsomeonebettertoreplacehim.AndwhoeverbearspatientlytheordealsofMadinah,forhimshallIbeanintercessor(orwitness)ontheDayofQiyamah.”[Muslim]

Madinah Munawarrah (“theenlightened city”) ranks as thesecond most holiest place inIslamafterMakkah.Itisthecitythat gave refuge to the Prophet

Muhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) and the early

Muslims upon their migrationfromMakkahandwhereliesthe

burialplaceoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص).

§ ItisnarratedbyAisha( اھنعهللايضر )thatwhentheycametoMadinah,itwasanunhealthy,unpleasantplace.AbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر )fellsickandBilal( ھنعهللايضر )alsofellsick;andwhenAllah’sMessenger(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)sawtheillnessofhisCompanionshesaid:“OAllah,makeMadinahasbelovedtousasyoumadeMakkahbelovedormorethanthat; make it conducive to health, and bless us in its sa’ and mudd’ (two standards of weight andmeasurement)andtransferitsfevertoJuhfa.”[Bukhari]

§ Itisstatedinanotherhadith:“TherewillbenotownwhichAd-Dajjal(theanti-Christ)willnotenterexceptMakkah and Madinah, and there will be no entrance (road) but the angels will be standing in rowsguardingitagainsthim,andthenMadinahwillshakewithitsinhabitantsthriceandAllahwillexpelallthenonbelieversandthehypocritesfromit.”[Bukhari]

§ NarratedAbuHuraira( ھنعهللايضر )thattheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)said,“Verily,BeliefreturnsandgoesbacktoMadinahasasnakereturnsandgoesbacktoitshole(whenindanger).”[Bukhari]

Masjid-e-Nabwi

§ When theProphet migrated(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) toMadinah (thencalledYathrib), thechiefsof thecityandhis immediatefollowersrodearoundhiscamelintheirbestclothesandinglitteringarmour.Everyonewashopinghewouldstop by their house. The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) would answer everyone politely and kindly,“[This camel] iscommandedbyAllah;whereveritstops,thatwillbemyhome.”Thecamelmovedonwithslackenedreins,reaching the site of the present masjid and knelt down. The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) alighted and said,“This is thehome”andinquiredas towhoowned the land.The landcontainedafewdate trees,gravesofpolytheists,aresting spot for herds of cattleandwas ownedby twoorphanbrothers,Sahland Suhail. TheProphet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)purchasedtheland,hadthetreesclearedandthepolytheistsgravesdugupandlevelled.

§ He then gave orders that his newly acquired courtyard should be made into a masjid and work beganimmediately.Mostofthebuildingwasdonebybricksmadeofstonesandkneadedclaybutinthemiddleofthenorthernwall(whichfacedtheoriginalQiblahinJerusalem),stoneswereputoneithersideoftheprayerniche.Thepalm treesin thecourtyardwerecutdownand their trunkswereusedaspillars tosupport theroofofpalm branches, but the greater part of the courtyardwas left open. Small stoneswere laid on the floor topreventitfrombecomingtoomuddyifitrained.Attherearofthemasjid,theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)builtashadedareacalled as-Suffah inwhich the poor companionswould spend the night. Two small huts (hujrah)were alsoconstructedontheeasternsideofthemasjidtoaccommodatehistwowivesatthetime,AishaandSauda( يضر

مھنعهللا ).

§ TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)gavetheMuslimsofMadinahthetitleof‘Ansar’whichmeansHelpers,whereastheMuslimsofQurayshandothertribeswhohadlefttheirhomesandemigratedtotheoasishecalled‘Muhajirun’,meaningEmigrants.Alltookpartinthework,includingtheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)himself,andastheyworkedtheychantedtwoverseswhichoneofthemhadmadeupfortheoccasion:“OAllah,nogoodisbutthegoodoftheHereafter,Sohelp the Helpers and the Emigrants.”And sometimes they chanted:“No life there is but the life of theHereafter.Mercy,OAllah,onEmigrantsandHelpers.”

§ ThemasjidwasbuilttwiceduringthelifetimeoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص).ThefirsttimewasshortlyafterhehadmadetheHijratoMadinahin622CE,withthesizeofthemasjidbeingapproximately35x30metersandtheheight2.5meters. Itwas rebuilt seven years later after the Fatah (opening) ofKhaibar. The increasing number ofMuslimsbythennecessitatedanincreaseintheareaofthemosquetoaccommodatemoreworshippers.Usman( ھنعهللايضر ) paid for the land to accommodate the extensionwhichmade themasjid approximately 50 x 50meters.Theheightwasalsoincreasedto3.5meters.

§ WhentherevelationcamedowntochangetheQiblatoMakkahin624CE,thewholemasjidwasre-orientatedtothesouth.

§ Themasjidalsoservedasareligiousschool,communitycenter,courtandalsoasaconfinementforprisoners.

his migration to Madinah. It is

thesecondmost reveredmasjid

in Islam and the second largest

in the world, after Masjid al-

HaraminMakkah.

§ Anas( ھنعهللايضر )reportsthattheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)said:“Whoeverperformsfortysalahinmymasjid,notmissingone salah in the masjid, for him is granted exemption from the fire of Hell, and exemption frompunishmentandheshallremainfreeofhypocrisy.”[Ahmad]

§ AbuHurairah( ھنعهللايضر )narratedthattheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)said:“OnesalahofferedinmymasjidissuperiortoonethousandsalahsofferedinothermasjidsexceptMasjidal-Haram(inMakkah).”[Bukhari]

RawdahMubarak(Sacredchamber)

§ WithregardsvisitingMadinahandperformingtheZiyarah(visitingthegraveoftheHolyProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)), theProphet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said: “Whoever visits me after my death is like he who had visited me during mylife.”[Tabraani]“Whoever performs his Hajj in Makkah, then comes to Madinah with the sole aim ofvisitingmeinmyMasjid,forhimshallbewritten(therewardsof)twoacceptedHajj.”[Daylami]“Whenapersonstandsatmygraverecitingblessingsonme,Ihearit;andwhoevercallsforblessingsonmeinanyotherplace,hiseveryneedinthisworldandinthehereafterisfulfilledandonthedayofQiyamahIshallbehiswitnessandintercessor.”[Bayhaqi]

§ Theviewingholesabovearealignedtothefacesoftheinhabitantsofthegraves.ThelargestholeontheleftdirectlyfacesthenoblefaceoftheProphetMuhammad(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص).TheoneinthemiddleisalignedtothefaceofAbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر )andlikewisetheoneontherightisalignedtothefaceofUmar( ھنعهللايضر ).

§ TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)wasburiedinthehouseofAisha( اھنعهللايضر )inwhosehousehewasstayingatthetimeofhisdeath.ThewivesoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)livedinsmall,simplehutsadjacenttothemasjid.Eachhutconsistedofaroomwhichwasapproximately5mx4mwithasmallbackyardandweremadeofunbakedbricksofmudwithbranchesofpalmtreeasaroofcovering.

§ OntheleftsideofthehutofAisha( اھنعهللايضر )wasthehutofSauda( اھنعهللايضر ),thesecondwifeoftheProphet)HafsaofhutThe.(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) اھنعهللايضر ),anotherwifeoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)andthedaughterofUmar( ھنعهللايضر )wasontheoppositeside.Thereusedtobeaverynarrowstreetbetweentheirhouses,justenoughforonepersontowalkthrough.Aisha( اھنعهللايضر )andHafsa( اھنعهللايضر )usedtoconversewitheachotherwhilesittingintheirownhuts.PartofthehutofHafsa( اھنعهللايضر )waslocatedinsidethepresentSacredChamberandpartofitiswherevisitorsstandforsalutationtotheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص).

§ In91AHUmarbinAbdulAziz(Allahshowmercyonhim)builtfivecorneredwallssothatnobodymayenterinsidetheSacredChamber.AfterseveralplotswereuncoveredtostealthebodyoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)bydiggingunderneath thegraves, theSultanNurruddinZengihada trenchbuiltaround thechamberwhichwas filledwithmoltenlead.

DeathandburialoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص):

§ InMuharram 11 AH the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) developed a temperaturewhich kept getting higher and he becameincreasinglyilldaybyday.HesoughtpermissionfromhiswivestostayintheroomofAisha( اھنعهللايضر )whichtheyreadilyaccededto.OnMonday,12Rabial-Awwal,hecameoutwithabandagetiedaroundhisheadandenteredMasjid-e-Nabwi.AbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر )wasleadingthesalahandmovedbackwardsbuttheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)motionedhimtocompletetheprayer.

§ AmongthelastadvicetheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)gaveoutwastheimportanceofprayerandthejusttreatmentofslavesand servants. In closing he said: “I leavewith you two things. As longas youhold them tightly, youwillnevergoastray;theyaretheBookofAllah(theQuran)andmysunnah.”

§ TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)grewweakerandeventuallypassedawayontheafternoonofMonday,12Rabiul-Awwal,11AH(633CE).

§ Thecompanionsofferedfuneralprayersindividually,withoutanImam.Thepeoplesaid:“Buryhimnearthepulpit.”Others said,“Buryhim inBaqi”.ThenAbuBakr ( ھنعهللايضر ) cameand said,“I heard theProphet ofAllah(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)saying,‘AProphetwasneverburiedexceptattheplacewherehedied’.”Thus,agravewasdugunderthebedintheroomandwhilsttheywerebathinghimtheyintendedtoremovehisshirtandavoicewasheard,“Donotremovetheshirt.”Hewasthenbathedwithhisshirt.[MuwattaMalik]

DeathandburialofAbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر ):

§ CaliphAbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر )leftawillwithhisdaughterAisha( اھنعهللايضر )toburyhimbythesideoftheProphethisoftimetheat(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)Prophettheasagesamethe63,ofagetheatAH13inal-UkhraJamadindiedHe.(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)death.DuringhisfifteendaysofillnessUmar( ھنعهللايضر )ledthesalah.AbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر )hadbeenCaliphforaroundtwoandahalfyears.

DeathandburialofUmar( ھنعهللايضر ):

§ CaliphUmarbinAl-Khattab( ھنعهللايضر )wasstabbedbyaPersianslavenamedFiroz(alsoknownasAbuLulu)whothencommittedsuicide.Shortlybeforehisdeathhesaidtohisson,Abdullah:“Gotothemotherofthebelievers,Aisha( اھنعهللايضر )andsay,‘UmarbinAl-Khattabsendshisgreetingstoyou,’andrequesthertoallowmetobeburiedwithmytwocompanions.”Aisha( اھنعهللايضر )said,“IhadtheideaofhavingthisplaceformyselfbuttodayIwillgivepreferencetohimovermyself.”Whenhereturnedhesaid:“Shehasallowedyou (to beburied there).”On thatUmar ( ھنعهللايضر ) said:“Nothingwasmore important tome than to beburiedinthat(sacred)place.”HediedonMuharram1,24AH,histenureasCaliphlastedtenandahalfyears.Suhaib( ھنعهللايضر )ledhisfuneralprayer.AftertheburialofUmar( ھنعهللايضر )intheSacredChamber,Aisha( هللايضراھنع )putapartitionbetweentheareaoccupiedbythegravesandtherestoftheroomasUmar( ھنعهللايضر )wasnot

mahramtoher.

HouseofFatima ( اھنع هللا يضر )

§ In thebeginning,ThehouseofFatima ( اھنعهللايضر )wasat somedistance fromthehousesof thewivesof theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص).TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)oncesaidtoher,“Wouldthatyouwerelivingnearme.”Fatima( اھنعهللايضر )replied,“Harithah’shouseiscloseby.Ifyouaskhimtoexchangehishousewithmine,hewillverygladlydoit.”TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)responded,“Hehasalreadyexchangeonceonmyrequest,Ifeelshytorequesthimagain.”

§ TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)acceptedtheoffer,saying,“Iknowyouarequitesincereinwhatyousay”andgivehimhisblessings.

§ AbuHurairah( ھنعهللايضر )narratedthattheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)said:“BetweenmyhouseandmypulpitliesagardenfromthegardensofParadise,andmypulpitisuponmyfountain(Al-Kauthar).”[Bukhari]

§ Scholars have interpreted the above narration as follows: The Garden is parallel to a garden above it inParadise.Oritisinrealityagardenofparadise,whichwillbereturnedtoparadiseinthehereafter.Oritislikethe gardens of paradise, because the peace and tranquilitywhich is experienced in itwhen engaged in theremembranceofAllahresemblesthatofparadise.[AkhbarMadinaturRasool,IbnNajjar]

§ AfterthechangeinQibla,theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)offeredsalahnearAisha’scolumnforashortperiodwhilefacingtowardstheKa’bah.LaterhestartedleadingsalahatthespotwheretheMehrabNabwiisnowadays.NotethattherewasnomehrabatthisspotduringtheperiodoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)andthefourCaliphs.

§ In91AH,UmarbinAbdulAzizmadeaprayingnicheintheformofamehrab.Sincethenit iscalledMehrabNabwi.Ifyouweretostandinthemehrabforofferingsalah,yourplaceofsajdawillbewhereProphet’s(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)feetusedtobe.TheProphet’s(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)placeofsajdaisintentionallycoveredbythethickwallofthemehrab.

Mimbar(pulpit):

§ TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)usedtoleanagainstthetrunkofapalmtreewhiledeliveringasermon.TheAnsarhumblysuggestedtohim,“Ifyouapprove,wecanmakeapulpitforyou.”TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)approveditandapulpitwasmade.ProphetMuhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) saton thispulpittomakeanaddress.When theProphet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) startedusingthenewpulpit,theoldtreeyearnedforhimlikeacamelmissingitscalf.TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)huggedthetrunkuntilithadcalmeddownandthenorderedthataditchbedugandthetrunkburieddecentlyintoit.

§ TheProphet used(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) tostandon the thirdrungwhiledeliveringhis sermons.WhenAbuBakr ( ھنعهللايضر )becamecaliph,hestoodonthesecondrungandUmarbinKhattab( ھنعهللايضر )stoodonthefirst.CaliphUthmanbinAffan( ھنعهللايضر )didasUmar( ھنعهللايضر )haddoneforsixyearsbeforehereturnedtotheoldpositionoftheProphet.AmirMuawiyyah( ھنعهللايضر )madeapulpitconsistingofninerungs.Theleadersstartedsittingontheseventhrung.ThepulpithassincebeenkeptinthisformandtheKhateebhasbeensittingontheseventhrungsincethattime.

§ Thepulpithasbeenreplacedonmanyoccasionsthroughoutthecenturies.ThepresentpulpitwasputupbySultanMuradin998AH.

1.UstuwaanahHannanah(theweepingpillar):

§ ThisisalsocalledtheUstuwaanahMukhallaq.ThisisthemostblessedofthepillarsforthiswastheProphet’sthemimbar,theofadventtheBeforetree.palmdateagrowtousedoncetherespotthisOnsalah.ofplace(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) used to lean on it while delivering the khutbah (sermon).When the mimbarwasmade theProphet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) used it for the khutbah. It so happenedwhen the change took place, such a bitter sound ofweepingwasheardfromthetreethatthewholemasjidechoed;andthoseinthemasjidstartedweeping.TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)thensaid:“ThetreecriesbecausethezikrofAllahwasnearit,andnowthatthemimbarisbuilt ithasbeendeprivedofthiszikrinitsimmediatevicinity.IfIdidnotplacemyhandonit, itwouldhavecriedthustilltheDayofQiyamah.”Afterwardsthetreedriedupandwasburied.

2.UstuwaanahSareer:§ ‘Sareer’meanssleepingplace.ItisreportedthattheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)usedtomakei’tikaaf(seclusion)herealso,

andusedtosleepherewhileini’tikaaf.Aplatformofwoodusedtobeputhereforhimtosleepon.

3.UstuwaanahTawbah(Forgiveness):

§ AlsoknownasUstuwaanahAbuLubabah.AbuLubabah( ھنعهللايضر )wasoneofthefamousSahaba.BeforeIslam,hehadmuchdealingswiththeJewsofBanuQuraizah.WhentheyactedtreacherouslyduringtheBattleofthe

Trenchandweretakencaptivehetoldthemthattheyweretobekilledbymakingasignacrosshisthroat.Afterhavingdonethathebecomesogrievedatthisindiscretionthathecouldnotrest.

§ Heenteredthemasjidatthisspotwhereadate-treeusedtostand.Heboundhimselftothetrunksaying:“AslongasmyrepentanceisnotacceptedbyAllah,Ishallnotuntiemyselffromhere.AndtheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)himselfmustundomybonds.”When theProphet heard(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) thishesaid:“Ifhehadcometome Iwouldhavebeggedforgivenessonhisbehalf.Nowhehadactedonhisowninitiative,Icannotuntiehimuntilhisrepentancehasbeenaccepted.”

§ Formany days he remained tied there, except for salah and the call of nature. At such times hiswife anddaughterusedtountiehimandthenagaintiedhimtothetree.Heremainedwithoutfoodanddrinkasaresultofwhichhissightandhearingwereaffected.ThenafterafewdaysonemorningwhiletheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)wasintahajjudprayerinthehouseofUmmeSalamah( ھنعهللايضر ),hereceivedthegoodnewsthathistawbahhadbeenaccepted. The Sahabah ( ھنعهللايضر ) conveyed the news to him, and wanted to untie him but he refused,saying:“AslongastheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)doesnotuntiemewithhisblessedhands,Ishallnotallowanyoneelsetodoso.”WhentheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)enteredforFajrsalahheuntiedhim.

4.UstuwaanahAisha( اھنعهللايضر ):

§ TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)usedtosayhisprayershereandafterwardsmovedtotheplaceatUstuwaanahHannanah.ItisalsocalledtheUstuwaanahQu’rah.ThereasonforthisisthatAisha( اھنعهللايضر )reportsthattheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)said:“Inthismasjidisonesuchspotthatifpeopleknewthetrueblessednaturethereof,theywouldflocktowardsitinsuchinamannertopraytheretheywouldhavetocastsuchlots.”

§ Peopleaskedhertopointouttheexactspotwhichsherefusedtodo.Lateron,atthepersistenceofAbdullahbin Zubair ( ھنعهللايضر ) she pointed to this spot. Hence it is called Ustuwaanah Aisha, because the Hadith isreportedbyherandtheexactspotwasshownbyher.ItisafactthatAbuBakrandUmar( مھنعهللايضر )veryoftenusedtoprayhere.

5.UstuwaanahAli( ھنعهللايضر ):

§ AlsoknownasUstuwaanahMah’rasorHars.‘Hars’meanstowatchorprotect.ThisusedtobetheplacewheresomeoftheSahaba( مھنعهللايضر )usedtositwhenkeepingwatchoractingasgatekeepers.Ali( ھنعهللايضر )usedtobetheonewhomostlyactedassuch,forwhichitisoftencalledUstuwaanahAli( ھنعهللايضر ).WhentheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)enteredthemasjidfromthedoorofAisha’s( اھنعهللايضر )room,hepassedthisspot.

6.UstuwaanahWufood:

§ ‘Wufood’meansdelegations.WheneverdeputationsarrivedtomeettheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)onbehalfoftheirtribes,theywereseatedhereandhereheusedtomeetthem,conversedwiththemandtaughtthemIslam.

7.UstuwaanahJibraeel:

§ Thiswas theusualplacewhere Jibraeel( مالسلاھیلع )used toenter tovisit theProphet becannotitToday.(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)seenasitliesinsidetheSacredChamberoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص).

8.UstuwaanahTahajjud:

§ ItisreportedthatthiswasthespotwherelateatnightacarpetwasspreadfortheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)toperformtahajjudprayer,afterallthepeoplehadleft.

Ashabus-Suffahplatform

§ The Ashab us-Suffah were companions of the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) who, along with the performance of religiousduties,weremostlytradesmenorfarmers.Somehad,however,dedicatedtheirlivesexclusivelyforprayerandspiritualdisciplineintheclosecompanyoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص).Theyneitherhadwivesnorchildren,andifanyweretogetmarried,hewouldleavethegroup.Manyofthemwouldgotothejungleinthedaytocollectwood,whichwouldthenbesoldformoneytofeedthemselvesandtheothermembersofthe‘suffah’.

§ TherecurrentlyexistsaraisedplatformbehindtheplatformwheretheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)performedTahajjud,itisontherightofthoseenteringfromBab-e-Jibraeel.ThisplatformiscommonlymistakentobetheplatformoftheAshabus-Suffah, itwasactuallybuiltby theTurks for theserviceandcustodialpersonnelof themasjid.ThissectionsitsoutsidethemasjidinthetimeoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)socouldnothavebeenthesuffah.

§ TheprecisenumberoftheAshabus-Suffahisnotknown,but it isestimatedthatthesuffahcouldholduptothreehundredpeopleatanyonetime,andthatroughlyseventypeoplemadeupits’permanentresidents.Theinitial inhabitants of the suffah were members who had migrated from Makkah and were without anyaccommodation.

§ SomeofthecompanionswhoatonetimeweremembersoftheAshabus-Suffahwere:

§ TheAshabus-Suffahpassedtheir livesintheserviceandcompanyoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص).Inthemorningtheywouldlistentohiswordsofwisdomandatnight,aftersleepingforawhile,theywouldspendtherestofthetimeinprayer.

§ DuetothetimetheyspentindevotionandprayerinMasjid-e-Nabwi,manyoftheAshabus-Suffahwereverypoorandunabletoaffordclothing.AbuHurairah( ھنعهللايضر )said,“IsawseventyofAshab-us-Suffahinsuchaconditionthatnoneofthemhadcompletedressforhimself.Eachoneofthemhadonesheetthathetiedupwithhisneck.Someofthemhadtheirsheetsreachneartheiranklesbutothers’sheetsreachedjustbelow their knees. Each of them used to hold the partition of his sheetwith his hand lest his body isexposed”.

§ Manyofthecompanionswentfortwodaysinsuccessionwithoutfood.WhentheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)cameintothemasjidtoleadthecongregationalprayers,theywouldfalldownduetoweakness.FoodgivenincharitytotheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)wasgiventothem,andwhentheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)wasofferedfoodasapresent,hewouldinvitethemtoshareit.Often,theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)wouldaskoneofhisothercompanionstotakesomeoftheAshabus-Suffahforsupper,andtoentertainthemasbesttheycould.

§ Uqbahibn-e-Amir( ھنعهللايضر )hassaid:“Rasulullah(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)cametouswhileweweresittingonthe‘Suffah’andaskedifanyoneofuswouldliketogotothemarketof ‘Buthan’or ‘Aqiq’andfetchfromtheretwoshe-camels of the finest breed without committing any sin or severing a tie of kinship. We replied thateveryone of uswould love to do so. Rasulullah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) then said that going to themasjid (mosque) andrecitingor teaching twoayaat aremoreprecious than twoshe-camels, threeayaat aremorepreciousthanthreeshe-camels,andthatsimilarlyrecitingorteachingoffour‘ayat’isbetterthanfourshe-camelsandanequalnumberofcamels.”[Muslim]

Mehrab-e-Tahajjud

§ IsabinAbdullah( ھنعهللايضر )said,“Whenvisitorsusedtodepartatnight,theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)usedtospreadamat behind Ali’s ( ھنعهللايضر ) hut and used to offer voluntary salah there. One day one person saw himoffering voluntary salahat thisspotduring themonth ofRamadhan.Thispersonalsostartedofferingvoluntarysalahatthisspot.Anotherpersonhappenedtopassthiswayandhestartedhissalahalso.Athirdpersonfollowedthesetwopersons.Byandbyalargenumberofpeoplegatheredthere.WhentheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)sawmanypeoplehewrappeduphisprayingmatandwentaway.WhenthesepeoplemetProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)inthemorning,theysaid,‘Wewereonlytryingtofollowyouinofferingvoluntarysalahatnight.’TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)said,‘Iwasconcernedaboutyouverymuch.MyconcernwasthatAllah(هلالج لج)maymaketheofferingofnightsalahduringRamadhanobligatoryforyouandyoumayfailtokeepupwithit’.”

Prophet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)usedtospreadhis

prayer mat and perform theTahajjud salah from time totime. Today it is covered by abookcase.

HouseofAbdullahbinUmar( ھنعهللايضر )

§ Abdullah bin Umar ( ھنعهللايضر ) accepted Islam in his childhood with his father. He was very particular infollowingthesunnahoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص),forexampleofferingsalahateveryspotwherehehappenedtoseetheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)praying.Hewaseighty-fouryearsoldwhenhediedin73AH.

§ Hewas thesecondmostprolificnarratorofHadithafterAbuHurairah ( ھنعهللايضر )withmore than2,600.Hewould only relate a hadith if he was completely sure that he remembered every word of it. One of hiscontemporariessaid,"AmongthecompanionsoftheProphet,noonewasmorecautiousaboutaddingtoorsubtractingfromthehadithoftheProphetthanAbdullahbinUmar."

§ HishousewasjusteastofthemehrabofMasjid-e-Nabwi.Bilal( ھنعهللايضر )usedtocallAdhan(thecalltoprayer)whilestandingonapillarofthishouse.ThiswasoneofthehousesonthesouthsideoftheMasjid-e-Nabwiwhosedoorsopenedintothemasjid.

§ ItisdescribedinUmdat-ul-AkhbarthatwhenallthehousesinthesouthsideofMasjid-e-Nabwiwereremovedthis house was treated differently. Walls of baked bricks enclosed the land of this house and a door wasinstalled in onewall. It waswritten on top of this door ‘The residence of the family of Umar ( ھنعهللايضر )’.Beautiful flowerswereplantedinsidethesefourwalls.ThisgardenwasjustinfrontoftheRawdahMubarak(wheretheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)isburied).Theironwindowinthevisitors’galleryforsalamisthesiteofthedoorofthehouseofthefamilyofUmar( ھنعهللايضر ).Thisdoorofthishousewentthroughseveralchangesduringthelastfourteenhundredyears.

§ Note that there are two rows of pillars between theMehrabUsman andMehrabNabawi.CaliphMehdi binMansurAbbasiconstructedacoveredpathfromthesouthernwallofthemasjiduptothefirstrowofpillarsduring165AH.ThefamilyofUmar( ھنعهللايضر )stoppedusingthedooroftheirhouseforentryintothemasjid.Asanalternative,anundergroundtunnelwasdugtoprovideaccesstothemasjidforthefamilyofUmar( ھنعهللايضر ).ThistunnelopenedwherethesecondrowofpillarsisandthefamilyofUmar( ھنعهللايضر )usedthisapproachtoenterthemasjid.Theironwindowinthevisitors’gallery,thatstillexists,replacedthedooroftheirhouse.

§ WhenthefamilyofUmar( ھنعهللايضر )passedawayonebyone,thisundergroundpassagewasclosedandalockwasputonitsdoor.ThedoortothistunnelwasopenedduringtheHajjperiodforvisitors.Induecoursethetunnel became very crowded and there was undesirable intermingling of men and women. § TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)usedtoleadSalat-ul-JanazaatthissiteandtheSahabacontinuedthistradition.AbuSaeedKhudri( ھنعهللايضر )says:“IntheverybeginningweusedtoinformtheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)whensomeonewasneardeath.TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)usedtovisittheailingpersonandmadesupplicationforhisforgiveness.Manytimes theProphet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) stayed there till thecompletionof the funeralservices. In thisway theProphetbodythetaketodecidedtherefore,We,occasion.sucheachattimelongveryafortherewaittohad(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)ofthedeceasedpersonneartheHujrah(housesofthewivesoftheProphet)sothattheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)canlead the salah more easily. The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) started offering Salat-ul-Janaza in the area describedabove.”ThisenclosureistodayusedasastoragespaceformaterialsneededinMasjid-e-Nabwi.

C.Bab-e-Jibraeel(DoorofJibraeel):

§ ThisdoorisalsocalledBab-un-NabisincetheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)usedtoenterthemasjidthroughthisdoor.Jibraeel( مالسلاھیلع )cametotheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)afterthebattleofAhzab(thebattleoftheConfederatesandalsoknownasthebattleoftheTrench),andtalkedtotheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)atthedoorstepofBab-e-Jibraeel.ItismentionedinBukhariasnarratedbyAisha( ھنعهللايضر ),“AfterthebattleofAhzab,theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)disarmedhimselfandtookabath.Inthemeanwhile,Jibraeel( مالسلاھیلع )cameridingaponyandtalkedtotheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)nearthedoor step of ofBab-e-Jibraeel. Jibraeel ( مالسلاھیلع ) said to theProphet puthaveYou‘,(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) away yourarmsbutwe(theangels)arestill inbattleuniforms.Soyoushouldcomewithus toattack the tribeofBanuQuraizah’.”Aisha ( اھنعهللايضر )added,“Iwas lookingat Jibraeel ( مالسلاھیلع ) throughthecracks in thedoorofmyhut.Jibraeel( مالسلاھیلع )wascoveredwithdust.”

D.Bab-un-Nisa(DooroftheWomen):

§ Umar( ھنعهللايضر )expandedthemasjidduring17AH.Hebuiltthisdoorattheendofeasternwallofthemosque.Womenusedtoenterthemasjidfromthisdoorandofferedtheirsalahinthelastrowsandthuswereabletoavoidcontactwithmen.AbuDawudmentionedthatUmar( ھنعهللايضر )said,“Weshouldlettheladiesusethisdoorexclusively.”

HouseofAbuAyyubAnsari( ھنعهللايضر )

§ WhentheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)enteredMadinahhetoldthepeopletoallowhiscameltogoherownwayfor“sheisguidedbyAllah.”AlloftheMuslimsdesiredthathewouldlodgewiththem.Finallytheshe-camelknelt,buttheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)didnotdismount.Theanimalrosetoitsfeetagain,ambledaheadforsomedistance,andthenturnedbackandkneltinthesameplaceithadbefore.Masjid-e-Nabwiwaserectedonthisveryspot.

§ AdjacenttothespotwherethecamelkneltwasthehouseofAbuAyyubAnsari( ھنعهللايضر )whohurriedtoliftthesaddlefromthecamelandtookittohishome.TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)remarkedhumorously,“Amanmustfollowhissaddle,”andwentalongwithAbuAyyub( ھنعهللايضر ).AsadbinZurara( ھنعهللايضر )tookholdofthehalter,sohewasallowedtotakecareofthecamel.

§ Accordingtootherreports,lotswerecastandwasdrawninthefavourofAbuAyyubAnsari( ھنعهللايضر ).

§ ThehouseofAbuAyyubAnsari( ھنعهللايضر )wasdouble-storied.WhenitwassettledthattheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)wouldstayatthisplace,heofferedtheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)tostayontheupperstoreybuttheProphetcouldnotagreetothisproposal, ashe felt thatpeople frequentlycoming tomeethimwoulddisturbhis (AbuAyyub’s) family.ThusthegroundfloorwasmadevacantfortheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص).AbuAyyub( ھنعهللايضر )sentmealstohimtwiceadayandwhateverheleftuneatenwassharedbyAbuAyyubandhiswife.HewouldlookatthemarksoftheProphet’s(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)fingersonthefoodandplacehisownfingersatthesamespotsasasourceofblessing.

§ AlthoughtheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)hadstayedatthegroundflooraccordingtohisownwish,itwasquiteunbearableforAbuAyyub( ھنعهللايضر )andhiswifethattheyshouldliveupstairswhiletheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)wasdownstairs.Theyweremuchdisturbedtothinkthat inthiswaytheywereshowingdisrespecttotheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص).Onenighttheycouldnotsleepandpassedthewholenightsittinginacorneroftheroof.InthemorningAbuAyyub( ھنعهللايضر )cametotheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)andsaid,“OProphetofAllah,wecouldnotsleepatnightbutpassedthewholenightsittinginacorneroftheroof.”WhentheProphetaskedthecause,hereplied,“Ourparentsmaybesacrificedonyou,wealwaysremainthinkingthatwearecommittingdisrespecttoyou.Lastnightthisfeelinggrewtotheutmostandwecouldnotsleep.”Afterthisherequested,“OProphetofAllah,havemercyuponusandkindlyshift upstairs.Weare yourslaves and shall remainsatisfiedunder your feet.”TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)grantedhisrequestandmovedupstairswhileAbuAyyubandhiswifemovedtothegroundfloor.

§ AbuAyyubAnsari’s( ھنعهللايضر )fullnamewasKhalidibnZaydibnKulayb.HisgraveliesinIstanbulwherehewashonouredwithmartyrdomduringthesiegeofConstantinopleinthecaliphateofMuawiyah( ھنعهللايضر )in48AH.

This is the approximate spotwhere existed thehouse of AbuAyyub Ansari ( ھنعهللايضر ). This iswheretheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)initially

stayedforseveralmonthsonhismigration to Madinah, whileMasjid-e-Nabwi and theadjoining rooms for his wiveswerebeingbuilt.

JannatulBaqi

§ Aisha( اھنعهللايضر )reported(thatwheneveritwasherturnfortheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)tospendthenightwithher)hewouldgoouttowardstheendofthenighttoal-Baqiandsay:“Peacebeuponyou,abodeofapeoplewhoarebelievers.Whatyouwerepromisedwouldcometoyoutomorrow,youreceivingitaftersomedelay;andGodwillingweshalljoinyou.OAllah,grantforgivenesstotheinhabitantsofBaqial-Gharqad.”[Muslim]

§ Baqimeansthelandinwhichtherootsofdifferenttreesareembedded,Gharqadisthenameofathornytree(Boxthorn)whichwereabundantinBaqi.HencethecemeteryalsocametobeknownasBaqial-Gharqad.

§ Thefirstpersontobeburiedinal-BaqiwasAs’adBinZararah( ھنعهللايضر ),anAnsaricompanionwhodiedsoonaftertheProphet‘s(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)migrationtoMadinah.TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)chosethespottobeacemetery.ThefirstoftheMuhajirun(Emigrants)tobeburiedtherewasUthmanbinMazoun( ھنعهللايضر )whodiedshortlyaftertheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)returnedfromthebattleofBadr.

§ SomeoftheblessedpersonalitiesrestinginJannatulBaqiare:

• ThewivesoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص),alsoknownastheMothersoftheBelieversincludingAisha,HafsaandSauda.ThetwowivesthatarenotburiedhereareKhadijahbintKhuwaylidwhoisburiedinMakkahandMaymunabintal-HarithwhoisburiedinSarif( مھنعهللايضر ).

• ThedaughtersoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص),Fatima,Ruqayyah,ZainabandUmmeKulthum( مھنعهللايضر ).• Ebrahim( ھنعهللايضر ),theinfantsonoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)byMariaal-Qibtiyya• Hasan( ھنعهللايضر ),thegrandsonoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)• Abbas( ھنعهللايضر ),theuncleoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)• TheauntsoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص),SafiyyahandAatikah( مھنعهللايضر )• Uthman( ھنعهللايضر ),thethirdCaliphandson-in-lawoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)• HaleemahSa’diya,thewet-nurseoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)• Sa’adbinAbiWaqqas( ھنعهللايضر )• Abdur-RehmanbinAuf( ھنعهللايضر )• AbdullahbinMas’ood( ھنعهللايضر )• AbuSaeedKhudri( ھنعهللايضر )• ImamMalik( ھنعهللايضر )

§ TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)said,“OnthedayofQiyamah(theDayofJudgement)mygraveshallbeopenedfirstandIshallstepforth.ThenshallAbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر )stepforthandthenUmar( ھنعهللايضر ).ThenshallIproceedtoBaqiandtakeallitsinmateswithme.ThenshallweawaittheinmatesofthegraveyardofMakkah,whoshallmeetmehalfwaybetweenMakkahandMadinah.”[Tirmidhi]

Jannatul Baqi (Garden ofHeaven)isthemaincemeteryofMadinah.Buriedtherearemany

members of the Prophet’s (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)

close family, around tenthousand of his companions(Sahabah)andmanyprominent,piouspersonalities.

§ DuringdifferenttimesofhistorymanydomesandstructureswerebuiltorrebuiltovermanyfamousgravesinAl-Baqiinordertoidentifytheinhabitants.OnApril21,1925,mausoleums,domesandstructuresinJannatulBaqiweredemolishedbytheorderofKingAbdulAzizAlSaudwiththeobjectiveofcomplyingwiththehadithoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)tonotcoverorbuildstructuresoveranygraveandtopreventpeoplefromseekinghelpfromthedead.OnlyafewofthegravesinJannatulBaqicannowbeidentified.

§ ItisvirtuoustovisitJannatulBaqi(preferablyonaFriday)andsupplicatetoAllah(هلالج لج)forallthoseburiedinitsnobleearth.

MasjidQuba

§ ThevirtueofMasjidQubaismentionedinthefollowingQuranicverseinSurahTawbah:“…certainlyamasjidfoundedonpietyfromtheveryfirstdayismoredeservingthatyoushouldstandinit…”[9:108]

§ TheProphet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said:“Hewhopurifies himself at his homeand comes toMasjidQubaandoffers tworakatstherein,willberewardedtherewardofanUmrah(smallerpilgrimage).”[SunanibnMajah]

§ Thepeople ofYathrib (whichwas later namedAl-MadinahAl-Munawwarah, the EnlightenedCity) had longawaited theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص), andeachday theywouldgobeyond thefieldsandpalmgrovesandwait forhimuntilthesunbecameunbearable.OnedaythepeoplereturnedtotheirhomesafterwaitingalongtimefortheProphet.AJewhappenedtocatchaglimpseofasmallgroupofwhite-robedtravellersinthedistance.Hecalledout:“OpeopleofArabia!Whatyouhavebeenwaitingforhasarrived!”

§ The Muslims lifted their weapons and rushed to greet the Prophet .(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) There was a great clamour aseveryone ran to the edge of the desert to catch a glimpse of the travellers. The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) then turnedtowardtherightandcametoBanuAmrbinAufatQuba.MostoftheMuslimswhohademigratedfromMakkahhadstayedatQubaandmanyofthemweretherewhentheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)arrived.

§ After reaching Quba, the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) dismounted. Those of the Ansar (literallymeaning ‘the helpers’, thenamegiventothoseinAl-MadinahwhobecameMuslim)whohadnotseentheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)thoughtthatAbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر )wastheprophetbecausehishairhadgrownalittlegrey.ButwhentheysawAbuBakrshadetheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)withasheet,theyrealizedtheirmistake.

§ Itwasatimeofgreatjoyfrombothsides.TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)addressedthemsaying:“OPeople,giveuntooneanothergreetingsofpeace;feedthepeople;strengthenthetiesofkinship,prayinthehourswhenothersareasleep.Evensoshallyeenterparadiseinpeace.”

§ OnarrivinginthevillageofQubaaftertheblessedHijra(migration),theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)stayedforseveraldaysinthehouseofKulthoombinHadm( ھنعهللايضر )andlaidthefoundationsofMasjidQubaonhisland.PriortothemigrationoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)theMuslimssometimesofferedtheirFridayprayersatthehouseofSa’adibnKhaithamah( ھنعهللايضر )whichwascloseby.ThelocationofthishousewasincludedinthemoderndayextensionofMasjidQubabutthelocationofthehouseofKulthoombinHadm( ھنعهللايضر )ismarkedbyafewboulderstothesouth-westofMasjidQuba.

§ TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)personallycarriedstones,rocksandsandwithhiscompanionsfortheconstructionwork.Al-TabaraniquotedAl-ShimousBintAl-Nuamanassaying,“IsawtheProphetwhenheconstructedthismosque.Heusedtocarrystonesandrocksonhisbackuntilitwasbent.Ialsosawdustonhisdressandbelly.Butwhenoneofhiscompanionswouldcometotaketheloadoffhim,hewouldsaynoandaskthecompaniontogoandcarryasimilarloadinstead.”

Quba, on the outskirts ofMadinah, is where the Prophet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) arrived and first stayed

after emigrating from Makkah.They arrived on Monday 12thRab’i al-Awwal and this datemarks the beginning of theIslamic calendar (Hijra). Amasjid was established here by

theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص), thefirsttobe

builtinIslam.

§ NarratedbyAbdullahbinDinar:Ibn ‘Umar( ھنعهللايضر )said,“TheProphetusedtogototheMosqueofQubaeverySaturday(sometimes)walkingand(sometimes)riding.”

§ ProphetMuhammad (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) led the first group prayer fromQubaMosquewhen Al-AqsaMosque in Al-Quds(Jerusalem)wastheQiblaatthetime.ThatFridayheleftQubawithAbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر ).HesentamessagetoBanuNajjar,thehouseofhismaternalgrandfather.HiskinsmencametoQubaandjoinedtheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)onhiswaytoMadinah.

MasjidJummah

§ TheProphet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) leftQuba onaFriday to head intoMadinah.Abouta kilometer fromQubahe passed thevillage of Banu Salim bin Auf. The people of Banu Salim implored:“OProphet of Allah, you stayed at thehomesofourcousinsforanumberofdays,rewardustoowithsomething,fortheywillpridethemselvesoverustilltheDayofJudgementthatyoustayedwiththem”.TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)dismountedandofferedhisfirstJummahintheirlocality.

§ ApproximatelyonehundredMuslimsparticipatedinthisfirstJummahsalah.AmongstthemweretheProphet’shimescortedhadwhoAmrBanifromsomeandhimmeettocomehadwhoan-NajjarBanifromrelatives(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)fromQuba.

§ Afterperforming theFridayprayer, theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)mountedQaswa(hiscamel)andsetoff for thecityofMadinah.

§ MasjidJummaisalsoknownbyMasjidBaniSalim,Masjidalwadi,MasjidGhubaibandMasjidAatikah.§ AccordingtoibnJarir,theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)deliveredthiskhutbah(sermon):

“Praise belongs to Allah. I praise Him, ask for His help and seek His Forgiveness and beseech Him forGuidance.IbelieveinHimanddonotrejectHim.IdespisethosewhodisbelieveHim.AndIbearwitnessthat there is noGodbutAllah, theOne,Whohasnopartner, and thatMuhammad isHisslaveandHisMessengerwhoissentwithguidanceandtruereligion,lightandadmonition,whentherehasnotbeenaMessengerforalongtime,whenknowledgeisbutlittle,menaremisguided,andendoftimeisnear,deathbeingathand.HewhoobeysAllahandHisMessengerisindeedguidedandhewhodisobeysthemislostonthewrongpath,isfallendowntoaterriblemisguidance.

AndIurgeyoutofearAllah–thebestadviceaMuslimmaygivetoanotherMuslim,urginghimtopreparefor theHereafterand to fearAllah.OPeople; keepaway from thatwhichAllahhasasked toshun.Andthere isnocounselgreater than thatandnoremembrancegreater than that.Know!Forhimwho fearsAllahinhispursuits,thebestcourseistaqwa(righteousness)inaffairsoftheHereafter.HewhokeepshisrelationshipwithAllah,bothsecretandopen,correct–beingsincere–thatwillbeanassetforhimafterdeathmorethanzikrinthisworld.Butifanyonefailsinthatthenhewouldwishthathisdeedswerekeptawayfromhim.Asforhimwhobelievesandfulfilshispromisethen;

“ThewordisnotchangedwithMe,nordoIwrong(My)servants.”[50:29]

Muslims!FearAllahinwhatconcernsyounowandwhatwillfollow,inwhatishiddenandwhatisopen,for,

“AndhewhofearsAllah,HewillacquithimofhisevildeedsandHewillmagnifyrewardforhim.”[65:5]

Masjid Jummah, on theboundaryofMadinahmarksthesitewheretheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) led

the first Jummah salah, shortlyafterhisHijrah(migration)fromMakkah. It isabout2.5kmfromMasjid-e-Nabwi.

AndthosewhofearAllahwillgainamightysuccess.It isfearofAllahthatkeepsawayHisdisapproval,punishmentandwrath. It is taqwa(fearofAllah) thatbrightens thecountenance,pleases theLordandraisesranks.

OMuslims! Pursue good fortune but do not lag behind in rights of Allah. He taught you His Book andguidedyouon thepath that therighteousand the falsemaybedistinguished.OPeople!Allahhasbeengoodtoyouandyoushouldbelikethattoothers.KeepawayfromHisenemiesandstriveinHiscausewithdetermination.HehaschosenyouandnamedyouMuslimsso thathewhoperishes,doesso forworthycauseandhewholives,followsaworthycause.AndeverypietyisdonewithHishelp.

OPeople!RememberAllah.Strive for theHereafter.As forhim,whocorrectshisrelationshipwithAllahthenAllahcorrectshisrelationshipwithotherpeople.

Know!Allah judgesoverpeoplebut isnotjudgedbyanyone.Heis theirMasterbut theyhavenopoweroverHim.AllahistheGreatest.Andthereisnopower(todogood)exceptwithAllahtheMighty.”

§ DuringhistimeinMakkah,theProphetMuhammed(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)usedtopraytowardsBait-al-Maqdis,withtheKa’bahinfrontofhim.WhenhemigratedtoMadinah,heprayedtowardsJerusalemfor16months,buthehopeditwouldbechangedtotheKa’bah.

§ DuringDhuhrprayer,oritwassaidthatitwasAsr,theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)hadledhisCompanionsinprayingtworak’ahs,whenhewascommandedtofacetowardstheKa’bahbythefollowingrevelationintheQuraninSurahal-Baqarah:“Verily,Wehaveseentheturningofyour(Muhammed’s)facetowardstheheaven.Surely,WeshallturnyoutoaQibla(prayerdirection)thatshallpleaseyou,soturnyourfaceinthedirectionofAl-Masjid Al-Haram (at Makkah). And wheresoever you people are, turn your faces (in prayer) in thatdirection.”[2:144]

§ The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) turned around towards the Ka’bah and the Sahabah copied out of obedience. Thus theKa’bahbecamethenewQiblaoftheMuslimsforalltimetocome.

§ MasjidQiblatainusedtouniquelycontaintwomehrabs,oneinthedirectionofBait-al-MaqdisandtheothertowardsMakkah.However,theoldmehrabhasnowbeencovered.

§ WhileitwasadayofjoyfortheMuslims,itwasadayofmourningfortheJews.TheMuslimshadnowbecomecompletelyindependentofthemandaprophecyintheiroldbookshadbeenfulfilledthatthelastofthegreatprophets would change the orientation of the religion of Allah from Jerusalem to the Ancient House ofIbraheem ( مالسلاھیلع ). Their elderswent as a body to the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) and said that if hewould change hisorientationbacktoJerusalem,thentheywouldfollowhim.Allah(هلالج لج)revealedintheQuraninSurahal-Baqarah:“AndevenifthoubroughtestuntothosewhohavereceivedtheScripturesallkindsofportents,theywouldnot followthyQibla,norcanst thoubea followerof theirQibla;noraresomeof themfollowersof theQiblaofothers.Andifthoushouldstfollowtheirdesiresaftertheknowledgewhichhascomeuntothee,thensurelywertthouoftheevildoers.”[2:145]

§ TheMuslimsbegantohaveadistinctivecharacterwhiletheJewsbegantogrowclosertothehypocritesandthepolytheists.ManyoftheHypocritesrevertedtoeitherJudaismorpaganism,therebypurifyingtheranksoftheMuslims.

§ ImamAhmedhasreportedfromAisha( اھنعهللايضر )thattheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)said:“ThePeopleoftheBookdonotenvyusforanythingasmuchastheydofortheFridaygiventousbyAllahwithwhichtheyaredeprived.TheyalsoenvyusfortheQiblawhichAllahgaveusbutnotthem,andalsofortheaameen(recitalafterSurahFatihainsalah)behindtheimam.”

ThisisMasjidQiblatain(Mosqueof the Two Qiblas). It ishistorically important toMuslims as this is where inRajjab2AHtherevelationoftheQuran came to change thedirectionoftheQiblafromBait-al-Maqdis in Jerusalem to theKa’bahinMakkah.

SaqeefahGarden

§ ConfusionreinedamongtheSahabahasaresultofthedevastatingimpactofthedeathoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)andthemostsignificantdisputethatarosewaschoosingtheProphet’s(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)successor.Ali( ھنعهللايضر )thoughtthathewaswithinhisrightstosucceedtheProphetbecausehehadbeenclosetohimfromthebeginningofhismission.Hewithdrew to his housewithTalha and Zubair ( مھنعهللايضر ). TheAnsar (Helpers) had gathered atSaqeefahBanuSa’edahtodiscussthequestionofsuccessionandfeltthatitshouldbeoneofthemastheyhadprotectedIslamandofferedahomefortheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)andhiscompanionswhentheywerepersecutedbytheirownpeople.

§ When news of this dispute reached Abu Bakr and Umar ( مھنعهللايضر ), they rushed from Masjid-e-Nabwi toSaqeefahBanuSa’edahaccompaniedbyagroupofMuhajireen (Emigrants).TheAnsarwereon thevergeofpledgingallegiencetoSa’dibnUbadah( ھنعهللايضر ).Theyre-iteratedtherightoftheAnsartotheleadershipoftheMuslimsbutAbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر )spokeaboutthegravityoftheproblem.HepointedoutthatthematterdidnotconcernthecitizensofMadinahalone;itwasamatterofconcernforalltheArabswhohadbecomeMuslims,whowerenotlikelytoaccepttheleadershipoftheAnsars,particularlywhenthereweredifferencesamongthetwoprincipaltribesoftheAnsarsthemselves.

§ AbuBakr ( ھنعهللايضر )pointedout thatunder thecircumstances theQuraysh,whowere thecustodiansof theKa’bahcouldaloneprovidetheleadershipfortheMuslimcommunity.AddressinghisappealtotheAnsarhesaid: “O Ansar, none can deny the superiority of your position in religion or the greatness of youreminence in Islam.YouwerechosenbyAllahas thehelpersofHisreligionandHisApostle.Toyou theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)wassentonhisemigrationfromMakkahandfromyoucomethemajorityofhiscompanionsandhiswives.Indeedinpositionyouarenextonlytotheearliestcompanions.ThereforeitwouldbefairifwetaketheCaliphateandyouaccepttheministry.Youshouldnotbeobstinateinyourstand.Weassureyouthatwewilldonothingwithoutconsultingyou.”

§ AbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر )thencaughtthehandofUmarandAbuUbaidahbinJarrahandsaid,“IchooseeitherofthesetwotobeourAmir”.“OneAmirfromamongusandonefromamongyou,”someonefromamongtheAnsarsuggested.PeoplebegantoraisetheirvoicesuntilfinallyUmar( ھنعهللايضر )intervenedsaying,”OHelpers,know ye not that the Messenger of Allah ordered Abu Bakr to lead the prayer?”. “We know it,”theyanswered,andhesaid:“Thenwhichofyouwillwillinglytakeprecedenceoverhim?”.“Allahforbidthatwetakeprecedenceoverhim!”theysaidwhereuponUmar( ھنعهللايضر )seizedthehandofAbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر )andpledgedallegiancetohim,followedbyAbuUbaidah( ھنعهللايضر )andothersoftheEmigrantswhohadnowjoinedthem.ThentheHelperswhowerepresentlikewisepledgedtheirallegiancetoAbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر ).

§ Whatevertheyhaddecidedinthehall,itwouldhavebeenunacceptableforanyonetohaveledtheprayersinMasjid-e-NabwiotherthanAbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر )solongashewasthere.Thenextdayatdawn,beforeleadingtheprayer,hesatinthepulpitandUmar( ھنعهللايضر )roseandaddressedtheassembly,biddingthempledgetheirallegiance toAbuBakr,whomhe described as“thebest of you, the CompanionofAllah’sMessenger, thesecondoftwowhentheywerebothinthecave.”ArecentRevelationoftheQuranhadrecalledtheprivilegeofAbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر )tohavebeentheProphet’ssolecompanionatthiscrucialmoment;andwithonevoicethewholecongregationsworeallegiancetohim–allexceptAli( ھنعهللايضر ),whodidsolater.

§ Somemonths later, Ali ( ھنعهللايضر ) said toAbuBakr ( ھنعهللايضر ):“Weknowwell thypre-eminenceandwhatAllahhasbestowedupon thee,andwearenot jealousofanybenefit thatHehathcaused tocomeuntothee.Butthoudidstconfrontuswithathingaccomplished,leavingusnochoice,andwefeltthatwehadsomeclaimthereinforournearnessofkinshipuntotheMessengerofAllah.”ThenAbuBakr’s( ھنعهللايضر )eyesfilledwithtearsandhesaid:“ByHiminwhosehandismysoul,IhadratherthatallshouldbewellbetweenmeandthekindredofAllah’sMessengerthanbetweenmeandmineownkindred”;andatnoonthatdayinthemasjidhepubliclyexoneratedAli fornotyethavingrecognisedhimasCaliph,whereuponAli( ھنعهللايضر )affirmedtherightofAbuBakr( ھنعهللايضر )andpledgedhisallegiance.

§ IthasbeenreportedbyAnas( ھنعهللايضر )thatAbuTalhaownedthebestgardensinMadinah,andtheyweremorenumerousthanthoseofanyotherAnsari.OneofhisgardenswasknownbythenameofBirHa,andthiswashis most favourite resort. It was close to the Prophet’s Masjid and the water of its well was sweet andabundant.WhenAllah(هلالج لج)revealedtheverseoftheQuran:“Youwillnotattainuntopietyuntilyouspendofthat which Ye love.”[3: 92] Abu Talha ( ھنعهللايضر ) presented himself to the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) and opened hisheart,“O,ProphetofAllah! I loveBirHaverymuch.AsAllahwantsus tospendprecisely thatwhichwelove,ImakeoverthatgardentobespentinthepathofAllahasyouplease”.TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)wasverymuch pleased, and remarked:“What a fine present (to Allah)! I think it would be best utilized if youdistributeitamongyourownheirs.”AbuTalha( ھنعهللايضر )wentandactedupontheProphet’sadvice.

§ AbdurRahmanbinAuf( ھنعهللايضر )reportsthattheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)cametoagardenoftheBaitul-Maal(treasury)andofferedsalah,thenwentintoa(lengthy)prostration.IsaidtotheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص):“OhProphetofAllah,youprostrated (for so long) that I feared that Allah may have taken your soul”. The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said:“Jibraeelcamewithamessage fromAllah; ‘Hewhosendssalutationsandpeaceuponyou, I shall sendmercyandblessingsuponhim.’IprostratedingratitudeofthisbountyofAllah.”

MasjidGhamama

§ ThismasjidisalsoknownasMasjidEid.AccordingtosomereportstheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)performedtheEidsalahhereduringthelastfouryearsofhislife.

§ This isalso the locationwhere theProphet Salatulperformed(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) Istisqa (a special salahfor invocationofrain).ThewordGhamamameanscloudswhichsuddenlyappearedandbrought rainafter theProphet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)hadperformedtheprayer.

§ Accordingtosomereports,thiswasalsothespot(orclosetothisarea)wheretheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)performedtheJanaza(funeral)prayerofNajashi, theEmperorofAksuminAbbyssinia(Ethiopia).Najashi,althoughbeingaChristian, had welcomed the groups of Muslims who had migrated to his country in order to escape thepersecutionoftheQurayshandlateronacceptedIslam.Whenhoweverhepassedaway,therewasnobodytoleadthefuneralprayersandsotheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)prayedhisJanazahsalah,theonlytimeeverhedidsointheabsenceoftheactualbody.

§ Although there is aMasjid here, there is no five timessalah performeddue to its proximitywithMasjid-e-Nabwi.Thephotobelowshowstheinteriorofthemasjid.

Thismasjid,locatedabout300msouth-west of Masjid-e-Nabwi isknownasMasjidGhamama.It isbuilt on the site where the

Prophet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)performedtheEid

salahduringthelastyearsofhislife.

§ DuringtheCaliphateofUmar( ھنعهللايضر ),theuncleoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص),AbbasbinAbdulMuttalib( ھنعهللايضر )wasaskedtoleadtheIstisqaprayer(prayerforrain)here.

§ Towards the south ofMasjidSuqya, just outside the boundarywall of the railway stationwasawellwhichbelonged to Saad ibnAbiWaqqas ( ھنعهللايضر ). On hisway to thebattle of Badr theProphet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) performedablutionwithitswaterandwaterwasdrawnfromhereforhimtodrink.

§ TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)alsomadedu’ahereforbarakah(blessings)forMadinah.

§ IbnMajarquotedAli ibnAbiTalib ( ھنعهللايضر ) as saying, theProphet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said:“When Idie,washmewithsevenwaterskinsfromAl-GharsWell.He(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)alsousedtodrinkfromthiswell.”

§ AfterperformingtheJumma(Friday)prayer,theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)setoffforUhudandperformedAsar,Maghrib,Isha,stayedthenightandperformedFajrhere.

§ DuringthisperiodalltheMusliminhabitantsofMadinahwerecalledhereincludingthewomenandelderly.TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)plannedthebattle, inspectedthetroopsandselectedthosetoparticipate.Severaltender-agedboyshadcomeoutwiththearmywiththezealtofightforIslambuttheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)orderedthemback.

§ Among theboyswasRafe’ ( ھنعهللايضر ).His fatherKhudaij ( ھنعهللايضر ) said to theProphet ofProphetO“,(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)Allah!MysonRafe’isaverygoodarcher.”Rafe’too,stoodonhistoestoshowhimselftallerthanheactuallywas. The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) permitted him to stay on. Samrah-bin-Jundub ( ھنعهللايضر ) learnt about this, hecomplainedtohisstep-fatherMurrah-bin-Sanan( ھنعهللايضر )saying,“TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)haspermittedRafe’andejectedme,whileIamsuretobeathiminawrestlingcontestand,therefore,IwasmoredeservingoftheProphet’s favour.”This was reported to the Prophet ,(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) who allowed Samrah to prove his claim bywrestlingwithRafe’.SamrahdidactuallybeatRafe’intheboutandhetoowaspermittedtostayinthearmy.Afewmoreboysmadesimilareffortstostayon,andsomeofthemdidsucceed.

§ TherewasagreatsetbacktotheMuslimswheninthemorningAbdullahbinUbai,theleaderofthehypocrites,brokeawaywithhisthreehundredfollowerspretendingthatsincehisopinionoffightinginsideMadinahwasnotaccepted,heandhismenwouldnottakepartinthebattle.ThisreducedtheMuslimarmyfromaroundonethousand toameresevenhundred to faceaQuraysharmyof three thousand.Surprisedandalarmed,othertribesreactedbadlytothenewsandalsoconsideredretreatingbutthecounseloftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)andAllah’s.Uhudtowardswaytheirmadetheydawnbeforeshortlyandresolvetheirrenewedgrace(هلالج لج)

§ Narrated Zaid bin Thabit ( ھنعهللايضر ): When the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) went out for Uhud, some of his companions(hypocrites)returned(home).Apartyofthebelieversremarkedthattheywouldkill those(hypocrites)whohadreturned,butanotherpartysaidthattheywouldnotkillthem.So,thisDivineInspirationwasrevealed(inthe Quran): “Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties concerning thehypocrites.“[4:88]

§ The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said,“Madinah expels the bad persons from it, as fire expels the impurities ofiron.”[Bukhari]

MountUhudandsiteofbattle

§ AfterthehumiliatingdefeatintheBattleofBadrayearearlier,theQurayshofMakkahmadepreparationstomusteragreatarmytofighttheMuslimsagainandtakerevenge.Theyassembledanarmyof3000soldierswith300camels,200horsesand700coatsofmail.WivesanddaughtersofslainedchiefsinBadraccompaniedthearmytoseewiththeirowneyesthespectacleofthekillersbeingkilled.Hind,thedaughterofUtbahwasthe leader of thewomens section andher husbandAbu Sufyanwas thecommander-in-chief of theMakkanarmy. Both were not Muslims at the time but bitter enemies of Islam. The left and right flanks werecommanded by Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl and Khalid bin Waleed respectively. Amr ibn al-As was named thecommander of cavalry and his task was to co-ordinate attack between the cavalry wings. (All threesubsequentlybecameMuslimsandbecomegreatgeneralsofIslam).

§ TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)leftMadinahforthevalleyofMountUhudwithaMuslimarmyofonly700anddrewuphistroopsforbattle.Zubairbinal-Awwam( ھنعهللايضر )wasthecommanderoftherightwingandMundhirbinAmr( ھنعهللايضر )wasgiventheleftwingofthearmy.Hamza( ھنعهللايضر ),theuncleoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)wasmadetheadvanceguard,Mus’abbinUmair( ھنعهللايضر )waschosenasthestandard-bearerofIslamandAbuDujanah( يضرھنعهللا )wasfortunateenoughtoreceivetheProphet’ssword(whichwasknownasZulfikar).

§ Beforethebattle,theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)hadput50archersunderAbdullahbinJubair( ھنعهللايضر )atamountainsideand ordered them strictly to stay there until further orders,whatevermaybe the condition. Theywere toobstructtheenemyiftheyattackedtheMuslimsfromtherear.

§ Thetwoarmiessetuponeachotherandafiercebattleensued.TheMuslimsoldiersconcentratedtheirattackontheelevenstandardbearersofthepagansuntiltheywereallwipedout.Astheenemystandardssanktotheground,theMuslimsoldiershurledthemselvesagainsttheenemy.AbuDujanah( ھنعهللايضر )andHamza( هللايضرھنع ),foughtwithgreatfearlessness,andtheirheroicfeatsonthebattlefieldweretobecomelegendaryinMuslimmilitaryhistory.

§ Tragically,Hamza ( ھنعهللايضر ), the Lion ofAllah,wasmartyred in the samebattle he haddominated.Hewaskilled by the javelin of Wahshi bin Harb, an Abyssinian slave, who with that successful throw earned hisfreedomfromhismaster,JubayrbinMutim.

§ DespitethelossofHamza( ھنعهللايضر ), theMuslimsmanagedtoovercometheunbelieverswho,facedwithyetanotherdefeat,begantoflee.ThepaganwomenalsoscatteredassomeoftheMuslimsoldiersgavechase.

§ Itwasat thispointofperceivedvictory thateventsbeganunravelling.Thearcherswhohadbeenentrustedwith the safety of their brothers in faith disobeyed the Prophet’s clear orders and deserted their stations,thinking that the battle was over. Forty of the rearguards descended the mountain and left the Muslimsvulnerabletoacounterattackbytheenemy.

This isasectionofMountUhud,in front of which the secondbattle in Islam (the Battle ofUhud)tookplacein3AH.Ofthis

mountain the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)

declared, “This mountain lovesusandweloveit.”[Muslim]

§ KhalidbinWaleedsawthesuddenvacuumcreatedbythedisappearanceoftherearguardandhiscavalrymen-attackedtheMuslimsfrombehind,killingmanyintheprocess.WhentheMuslimssawthemselvessurrounded,theywereovertakenbypanicanddisorderandfailedtomapoutacohesiveplan.

§ TheenemyfoughttheirwayclosetotheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)whowashitwitharockandfellonhisside.Oneofhisfront teethwaschipped,his lower lipwascut, andhishelmetwasdamaged.Asanenemysoldier thrusthisswordattheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص),hecaughthisbonebelowtheeye,andtworingsfromtheProphet’shelmetpiercedhis face.Thebloodrandownhis faceandhewiped itaway, saying,“HowcanapeopleprosperwhohavestainedtheirProphet’sfacewithbloodwhilehesummonedthemtotheirLord!”.

§ Mus’abbinUmair( ھنعهللايضر ),wastargetedbytheenemyashewastheMuslimsstandard-bearerandhewaskilled.SinceMus’ab ( ھنعهللايضر ) resembled theProphet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) toagreatextent,hiskiller,AbdullahbinQam’a,thoughthehadslaintheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)andjubilantlyshoutedoutthathehadkilledMuhammad.

§ Rumours of the death of the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) filtered through the Muslims, plummeting their morale. Griefstrickenandlost,someofthemsimplyabandonedthefield,whileotherswereinfusedwithresolveandralliedsaying,“Come,letusdieforwhattheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)gavehislife.”

§ ThecrisisrecededonlywhenKa’bbinMalik( ھنعهللايضر )caughtaglimpseoftheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص),makinghiswaytojointhebesiegedMuslims.K’abrecognisedtheProphet’seyesalthoughhisfacewascoveredwiththehelmet.Hecriedloudly,“OMuslims,rejoice!HereistheProphet!”.

§ Ka’b’swordsgalvanisedtheremainingMuslims,andtheystreamedtotheProphet’sside.WithinashorttimethirtyCompanionsassembledaroundhim.TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)decidedagainstfurthercombat,wiselychoosingtoretreat.Hemadehiswaythroughtherowsandsuccessfullyledhistroopstowardsthemountainpass.

§ Byretreating,theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)managedtosavehisarmyfromfurtherlosses;lossesthathadcomeaboutfromsimple disobedience of his orders.Disobedience hadchanged theMuslim victory into catastrophe, butwithAllah’shelptheMuslimswerepulledbackfromtheedgeofdisaster.

§ The Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) appointed 50 archers under the command of Abdullah bin Jubair ( ھنعهللايضر ) and said tohim,“Driveoffthehorsesfromus,lestweshouldbeattackedfromtherear.Whetherwewinorlosethebattlestandsteadilyatyourposition.Seethatwearenotattackedfromyourside.”

§ SeeingthatthebattlewasgoinginthefavouroftheMuslimsandthepolytheistswereretreatingcreatedazestandfervouramongtheMuslimarchersheartstochasetheescapingenemyandtocollectthebootyleftbehind.Manybegantoleavetheirposition.AbdullahbinJubair( ھنعهللايضر )triedhisutmosttocheckthembyremindingthemoftheProphet’scommandandsolicitedthemtostayon,butnomorethantenpersonswouldlistentohim, arguing that the orders given by the Prophet were(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) only for the duration of the actual fight. Theenemycavalrythennoticedtheunguardedpassintherear,madeaflankmovement,forcedapassagethroughit,andfellrightontherearoftheMuslims,whowerepre-occupiedwiththebooty.AbdullahbinJubair( هللايضرھنع ) wasmartyred on the spot. This sudden attack by the polytheists created a temporary confusion in theMuslim ranks and they stopped chasing the Makkan army. The chaotic condition of the Muslim ranksemboldenedIkramahbinAbiJahlandAbuSufyantostopfleeingandtheygatheredtheirsoldierstogethertolaunch another attack on theMuslimswhile theywere in the state of turmoil. This sudden onslaught onlyaddedtothetroubleandlossesintheMuslimranks.

§ ItwasinthisstateofaffairsthatAnasbinNadhr( ھنعهللايضر )sawSa’adbinMa’az( ھنعهللايضر )passinginfrontofhim.Heshoutedtohim:“OSa’ad!Whereareyougoing?ByAllah!IsmellthefragranceofParadisecomingfromMountUhud.”Sayingthis,hethrewhimselfintotheverythickoftheenemy,andfoughttoothandnailtillhemethismartyrdom.Afterthebattle,itwasfoundthathisbodyhadbeenmauledandmutilatedtosuchanextentthatonlyhissistercouldidentifyhim,andthatbarelyfromthefingertips.Nolessthaneightywoundsofarrowsandswordswerecountedonhisbody.

§ TobecheatedofvictoryovertheQurayshwhenitwaswithingraspwasagreatdisappointmenttotheProphettheofversesholythemoment,bitterthisAtinstruction.directadisobeyedhadarcherstheasespecially,(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)Quran came down to console and guide himwith the followingwords: “By the mercy of Allah you havesoftenedtowardsthem.Hadyoubeenrough,hard-hearted,theywouldhavedispersedawayfromyou.Sopardonthem,askforgivenessforthemandconsulttheminaffairs.Onceyoumakeadecision,thentrustinAllah.AllahlovesthosewhotrustinHim.”[3:159]

§ TheQur’an orderedhim to forgive them, asAllah inHismercy forgives the erring, andnot onlywas he toforgivethem,buttocallthemtohimandconsulttheminaffairs,thusrestoringtheirself-respect.

archers during the Battle ofUhudwiththestrictinstructionsnottomove.Itwasthedesertionof their posts by many of thearchers on thinking the battlewasoverthatledtoareversaloffortune for the Muslims in thewar.

MartyrsofUhud

§ Hamza ( ھنعهللايضر )was one of thegreatestMuslimwarriors. In the battle of Badr, he had killedmany of theQurayshinoblesandnowhecuthiswaythroughtheirrankslikeamightywavesweepingallbeforeit.Oneofthe Qurayshi nobles had a black slave calledWahshi from Abyssinia (present Ethiopia)who could use thejavelinwithgreatskill.Hismaster,JubayrbinMut’imhadpromisedhimfreedomifhekilledHamza( ھنعهللايضر )ashehadkilledhisuncle inBadr.Wahshiprowledamongst the fightersuntilhesawHamza ( ھنعهللايضر ).Hesays,“Iheldmyspearandbalanceditwell,thenIaimedit.Itenteredintohisabdomenandwentouttheotherside.Iwaiteduntilhewasdead,thenItookmyspearandwenttowaitinthecamp.Ihadnoquarrelwithanyone.Ikilledhimonlytobesetfree.”WahshilateroninlifebecameaMuslimandkilledMusailimah,theimposterwhoclaimedProphethoodafterthedemiseoftheProphetMuhammed(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص).

§ WhenthetideofwarturnedtowardstheQuraysh,thewomenofQuraysh,ledbyHind,whosebrother,uncleandlovedoneshadbeenkilledinBadrbegantomutilatetheMuslimdead.Sheparticularlyventedherfuryonthe body of Hamza ( ھنعهللايضر ), cutting off his nose and ears,making a slit in his chest, taking out his liver,chewingitbutunabletoswallowit.TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)wasgreatlygrievedwhenhecameuponthebodyofhisbeloveduncle.Yearslater,whenMakkahlayopenathisfeet,hegaveallitsinhabitants,includingHindafreepardon.HindsubsequentlyacceptedIslam.

§ Mus’ab( ھنعهللايضر )heldtheflagofIslam.WhentheMuslimsonmeetingdefeatweredispersinginconfusion,heheldtheflagandstoodathispostlikearock.Anenemycameandcuthishandwithasword,sothattheflagmightfallandthedefeatmightbeaccomplished.Heatoncetooktheflagintheotherhand.Theenemythencuttheotherhandalso.Heheldtheflagtohisbosomwiththehelpofhisbleedingarms.Theenemyatlastpiercedhisbodywithanarrow.Hefelldeadand,withhimfelltheflagthathehadnotallowedtofallwhilehewasalive.AnotherMuslimranandtookovertheflag.Atthetimeofhisburial,hehadonlyonesheettocoverhisbody.This sheetwas tooshort forhis size.When itwasdrawn tocover thehead, thefeetwouldbeexposed,andwhenitwasdrawntocoverthefeet, theheadwouldbecomeuncovered.TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)said:“Coverhisheadwiththesheet,andhisfeetwiththe‘Azkhar’leaves.”

§ Around sixty-fiveAnsarand fourMuhajirunwere honouredwithmartyrdom,while therewere twenty-twofatalitiesamongthepolytheists.

§ TheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)instructedthemartyrstobeburiedstillcoveredwithblood,intheconditionthattheyhadfallen.Twoorthreeofthemartyrswereburiedinasinglegrave.Insomecases,hedirectedhisCompanionstoshroudthemartyrsinpairs.ThemartyrwhohadlearnedmoreoftheQuranwasloweredinthegravefirst.PayingtributetotheirsacrificeinthecauseofAllah,theProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)said,“IshallbeawitnessuntothemontheDayofResurrection.”

§ TheProphet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) used to visit the graves of themartyrs ofUhud and thus it is sunnah to also visit them.However,careshouldbetakennottoengageinanyinnovativeornon-Muslimpracticessuchassupplicatingtothemartyrs,throwinglettersormoneyintothegraveyard,thetyingofthreadsortawaf.

This enclosure, at the foot ofMountUhud,containsthegravesof Hamza ( ھنعهللايضر ), Abdullahbin Jasht ( ھنعهللايضر ) and Mus’abbin Umair ( ھنعهللايضر ) who wereall martyred in the Battle ofUhud.TherestofthemartyrsofUhud are buried behind thisenclosure.

§ ThelocalityofBanuHarithawasinthisareasothemasjidisalsoknownasMasjidBaniHaritha.

§ Thislocationwasthestartingpointofthetrench,whichwasduginpreparationoftheBattleofAhzab.

§ Jabir( ھنعهللايضر )reportsthattheProphet(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)madeduaforthreedays(aftertheritualprayers).

§ From amongst his supplications were: “O Allah, Revealer of the Book, swift in taking account, turn theconfederatestoflight,OLorddefeatthemandcausethemtoquake.”

“ThereisnoGodbutAllah,theOnewhoConferreduponHisarmiesthehonourofvictoryandhelpedHisservantandroutedtheconfederatesalone;thereisnothingafterthat.”

§ Allah(هلالج لج)answeredthecallofHisMessengerandJibraeel( مالسلاھیلع )wassenttogivehimgladtidingsofvictory.Themasjidmarksthespotwherethishappened.Fatahisarabicforvictory.

§ MasjidFatahisalsoknownasMasjidAhzabandMasjidA’la.AmasjidexistedhereatthetimeoftheProphet.(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)

§ MasjidFath isoneof thegroupofmasjidsknowncollectivelyasMasaajidSab’ah (TheSevenMosques), theothersbeingMasjidSalmanFarsi,MasjidAli,MasjidUmar,MasjidSa’ad,MasjidAbuBakrandtheseventhisMasjidQiblatain.Someofthesehavenowbeendismantled.

§ AamirbinSa’ad( ھنعهللايضر )reportedontheauthorityofhisfatherthat:OnedayAllah’sMessenger(ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)camefromAaliyaandpassedbythemosqueofBanuMu’awiyah.Hewentinandobservedtworak’ahsthereandwealsoobservedprayeralongwithhimandhemadea longsupplicationtohisLord.Hethenturnedtousandsaid:

“IaskedmyLordthreethingsandHehasgrantedmetwobuthaswithheldone.IaskedmyLordthatmyUmmahshouldnotbedestroyedbyfamineandHegrantedmethis.AndIaskedmyLordthatmyUmmahshouldnotbedestroyedbydrowning(bydeluge)andHegrantedmethis.AndIaskedmyLordthatthereshouldbenobloodshedamongthepeopleofmyUmmah,butHedidnotgrantit.”[Muslim]
