MADEIRA 2010–2011 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Madeira Friends,

The 2010 –2011 year was one of transition and change as well as celebration and excitement. Faculty, staff, students, parents andalumnae welcomed our new Head of School, Pilar Cabeza de Vaca, with great enthusiasm: 1,200 attended events held in 11 statesacross the country and more than 500 came to her installationceremony last September. Every member of the faculty and staff gave to The Madeira Fund. Additionally, both the SeniorParents and their daughters, the Class of 2011, reached 100% participation in The Madeira Fund. Finally, Madeira parentsreached 93% participation and our alumnae increased their givingfrom 28% to 34% participation.

The numbers and statistics show that the Madeira community is dedicated and truly cares about our school. The outpouring ofsupport on behalf of every constituent group this year proved to ournew Head, and to our entire community, that we are committed, we are engaged and we are eager to face new challenges.

The exceptional accomplishments described in the AnnualReport that follows would not have been possible without the generosity of those listed on these pages and their heartfelt belief in the power of educating young women. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I extend my deepest gratitude to the alumnae, parents, students, faculty, staff and friends who continue to believe in the mission of The Madeira School.

I look forward to a new school year which I know will providetremendous opportunities for growth in the vibrant and dedicatedcommunity of Madeira.

Sincerely,

Jane Krumrine Lawson-Bell ’76President, Board of Directors

Association.

Nearly 550 members of thecommunity attended theSeptember 2010 Installa-tion of Pilar Cabeza deVaca to welcome her to

MADEIRA 2010–2011 ANNUAL REPORT

WITH THE CLOSE of the 2010 –2011 fiscal year, The MadeiraSchool continues to be financially stable due to the gener-ous support from our community, a strong admissions yearand a commitment to being fiscally responsible. Onceagain, the School ended the year with a balanced budgetas is the goal every year. The School’s endowment has con-tinued to recover, increasing in value during the 2010 – 2011year from $45.8 million to $54.9 million. The well-diversifiedinvestments produced a total return of 21% during the year.

In response to the slowly improving economic condi-tions, the Board adopted a conservative budget for the currentschool year that holds the tuition increase at 2.5% for the secondyear in a row, freezes hiring for new positions, tightens budg-ets across the campus and provides a modest salaryincrease for faculty and staff.

The generous support received from the Madeiracommunity, including Madeira Fund participation anddollar increases from numerous groups, is vital to thehealth of the School as it provides resources not coveredby tuition. With an enrollment of 313 students, 167 board-ers and 146 day students, the School continues to attractbright and capable girls.

Maintaining and improving the buildings and grounds of our unique campus is a major financialresponsibility. A campus as large and as beautiful as Madeira’s requires a financial commitment in orderto be preserved and enhanced. During the year the five new faculty houses, named the Griffith Cottages, were completed and are now occupied. Other major projects this year included replacing both the heat-ing and air conditioning equipment in the Chapel/Auditorium; the paddocks on the east side of themain driveway were reconfigured and replanted to control soil erosion; and the main driveway wasrepaved and a concrete edge was added to stabilize the gravel parking strip. The Board also approvedthe refinancing of the School’s long-term debt, $18.9 million, to stabilize the interest rate for ten years.

The Board of Directors continues their efforts towards strengthening the School financially, distributing financial aid to families, funding faculty salaries to draw the best candidates and main-taining the campus’ deferred facilities maintenance needs. Thanks to your continued support,Madeira will succeed for years to come in educating Madeira Girls.

Respectfully submitted,

H. Braughn Taylor, Ph.D.Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer

MADEIRA’S ENDOWMENT

These visionary gifts given to the endowment have provided support for many of theSchool’s priorities and, due to the generous support of our donors and careful stewardship oftheir gifts, this year the endowment was valued at $54.9 million as of June 30, 2011.

Invested in perpetuity and held in trust, over 80 endowed funds make up Madeira’sendowment. Establishing an endowed fund or scholarship is an excellent way to memorial-ize or honor a classmate, celebrate your years spent at Madeira or simply to show your con-tinued support of the School. A minimum gift of $50,000 is necessary to create a fund orscholarship. Gifts may also be given to existing funds.

For more information on how to establish an endowed fund or scholarship, please con-tact the Development Officeat (703) 556-8221.

Madeira’s endowment is important to the continued

success of the School. From keeping the lights on in the

dorms to supporting numerous scholarships, the annual

draw from the endowment contributes each year to the operating

budget and helps to shape the experience and education for Madeira

She went on to attend the Cornell UniversitySchool of Hotel Administration (SHA). Upon her grad-uation, Katherine was awarded the Drown SpecialPrize, the top honor at the SHA recognizing not onlyher strong academic performance, but also her com-munity involvement and entrepreneurial spirit.

Like many Madeira girls, Katherine believes innot only the power of education but, perhaps evenmore importantly, the pursuit of one’s dreams. Shecredits her years at Madeira for providing her with thedrive, confidence, experience and education for herpast success and future endeavors.

Katherine has generously decided to use a por-tion of the Drown Prize funds to inspire more Madeiragirls to follow their dreams. Katherine’s nickname atMadeira was “Pink Girl” and when establishing theaward, she chose the acronym PINK (Passion, INitia-tive, Knowledge) to symbolize the characteristics thatthe recipient should embody.

The establishment of the PINK Award will helpfund a Madeira student to engage in a field or indus-try for which she has a sincere, honest and genuinepassion. Girls may apply for a $2,000 grant to be usedto facilitate her Co-Curriculum experience or other-wise broaden a keen interest in a certain field.

Katherine’s generous gift comes as no surprise. Her successful work in an industry that aims to pleaseand delight the masses has come even closer to home, providing the unique opportunity for a Madeira girl tochase her dreams and pursue her passion.

MADEIRA 2010–2011 ANNUAL REPORT

MADEIRA FUND THE MADEIRA FUND

ResuLts FoR 2010–2011

Eeach year, members of the Madeira community contribute

generous gifts to The Madeira Fund, our annual giving program.

These gifts cover approximately 8% of the School’s annual oper-

ating budget. Without this essential support from our alumnae, current

and past parents, grandparents and friends, Madeira would not be able

to offer the many wonderful programs and opportunities currently made

available to the girls. We are very grateful for the generosity that the

community shows year after year.

This past year was no exception. Over 2,200 donors made their annual contributions to The2010 – 2011 Madeira Fund and raised a total of $1,570,291. Leading the way, our Leadership GiftClub donors contributed $1,323,591, which constitutes 84% of the total dollars raised.

Alumnae contributed $1,117,008 and increased their participation from 28% to 34%. Thiswas a true milestone as this is the highest alumnae participation has been since 2003 – 2004.We would like to thank our class agents for their leadership in this effort.

Reunion classes (those ending in 1 and 6) gave a total of $267,616. This was the inauguralyear for Madeira’s Reunion Giving Challenge Cups. The Festina Lente Cup was awarded to thereunion classes that reached the highestlevel of participation in The MadeiraFund as of Reunion Weekend. Thisyear’s winners of The Festina Lente Cupwere the Classes of 1961 and 1986. TheMadeira Cup was awarded to thereunion classes that reached or exceed-ed their fundraising goal as of ReunionWeekend. This year’s winners of TheMadeira Cup were the Classes of 1951,1971, 1986, 2001 and 2006. Winningclasses celebrated with champagnethroughout the weekend.

The parent community also con-tributed generously this year. The Par-ents’ Fund surpassed its goals by raising$316,134 and achieving 93% participa-tion. The Senior Parent Gift Programalso exceeded its goal of raising $120,000 and reached 100% participation from senior parents. Many thanks to our Parents’ Fund Co-Chairs, Ramona and Robert Deal P’11, and our Senior Par-ent Gift Program Chair, Margaret Doubleday P’11, for leading the way to these successes.

Our thanks go out to each and every one of the donors who made a gift to The 2010 – 2011Madeira Fund. Your support keeps Madeira strong and allows the School to carry out MissMadeira’s mission of educating young women for the world we live in today.

Members of the class of 1986 celebratebeing awarded the Festina Lente cup andthe Madeira cup over Reunion Weekendfor their successful fundraising efforts

ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

The Alumnae Association Leadership Council (AALC) had a productive and busy year

in 2010 – 2011. Building on a robust infrastructure of committees created in past years, the

council set to work connecting more alumnae to each other and the School through

a series of regional events hosted by AALC members.

A group of alumnae from the classes of 1968 – 1972 went to Broadway to see Driving MissDaisy followed by a Dutch treat lunch. Another group viewed several exhibits at the Metro-politan Museum and had lunch at the Patron’s Dining Room. Others took a trip to the orchidshow at the New York Botanical Garden. In Philadelphia, alumnae enjoyed a luncheon at theAcorn Club to hear Cece Turner Haydock ’71 lecture on Edith Wharton and the Villas of Rome. There were Young Professional Happy Hours in the Washington, D.C., New York and SanFrancisco areas. Charlotte, NC alumnae were treated to a private tour of a soon to open exhib-it entitled “Courage” at the Museum of the New South. Alumnae in Pittsburgh toured theFlower Show at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens followed by a luncheon.

In other actions, our Stewardship Committee filled more Class Agent positions. Our Volunteer Committee found alumnae to replace departing Class Secretaries and fill emptyspots. Two AALC members were named to be liaisons with Class Secretaries. Our new SocialNetworking Committee collaborated with the Alumnae Office to enhance the alumnaeonline experience, increase the daily traffic on Madeira’s Facebook pages and grow the num-ber of Madeira connections on LinkedIn. Our Nominating Committee recruited six newAALC members and helped the AALC maintain a healthy total of 25 members. A specialthanks goes out to Cathy Shraga ’70 for her service as President of the AALC. If you wouldlike to learn more about the AALC, please call Holland Williams ’83 in the Alumnae Office at (703) 556-8223.

The Parents’ Fund, which is a portion of The MadeiraFund, is relied upon to help cover the gap between tuition rev-enue and the true cost of educating today’s Madeira girls. TheParents’ Fund allows the School to provide the best possibleeducation and environment for its students. On behalf of thefaculty, staff and students, we would like to thank all the par-ents who participated for their generous support of the School.

Madeira parents showed increased support of the Schoolthrough their contributions to the Parents’ Fund. Their generous gifts surpassed previous years’ results and

allowed the Parents’ Fund to continue to grow and flourish. Parentssurpassed their fundraising goal of $315,000 by contributing a total of $316,133. And parents reached a milestone with 93% participation, an increase of 7% over 2009 – 2010.

THE GREENWAY SOCIETY

Founded in 1992, the Greenway Society is an honorary organization of those

who have chosen to support Madeira’s mission through charitable bequests,

trusts, life-income gifts and various other planned gifts.

theRe ARe seVeRAL types oF pLAnned GiFts:

Bequests: You may provide for Madeira in your will with a specific amount, leave a percentage of your estate to the School or designate the School as a residual beneficiary.

Life Income Gifts:There are several types of life income gifts to consider:

• Charitable Gift Annuity: A contract that provides you and/or your designatedbeneficiary with income for life or for a specified number of years. Currentannuity rates range from five to ten-and-a-half percent, depending on the ageof the annuitant.

• Pooled Income Fund: You transfer assets to a fund managed by Madeira inwhich all gifts are “pooled” for investment purposes with the income sharedproportionally among participants.

• Charitable Remainder Trust: You transfer assets to the trust in return for anincome stream for life or a specified term of years. Upon death, or the end ofthe term, assets are distributed to Madeira.

• Charitable Lead Trust: You transfer assets to a trust and Madeira receives theincome stream from the trust. At the end of the trust, the principal reverts tothe donor or another beneficiary.

Life Insurance:You may name Madeira the owner and beneficiary of a policy; if you continueto pay the premiums, you will be credited for the amount of the premiums in the years theyare paid. You may also name Madeira as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs):You may name Madeira as the beneficiary of yourIRA. All taxes are avoided when IRAs are contributed by bequest to a non-profit organiza-tion. In addition, if you are 70 ½ or older, you may make charitable gifts directly from yourIRA accounts without incurring income tax on the withdrawal.

Real Estate:You may contribute a primary residence or vacation home outright, or reservethe right to occupy your home for a term of years or for life.

We are deeply grateful to the members of the Greenway Society for having the generosity andforesight to take a serious interest in the School’s future and contribute in this powerful way.

If you would like to become a member of the Greenway Society, or if you are interestedin receiving more information about planned giving opportunities, please contact the Devel-opment Office at (703) 556-8221.

Madeira has been fortunate that members throughout our community remembered theSchool in their estate plans over the years. In 2010 – 2011 over $2 million was realized. Gifts ofthis kind have played a significant role in Madeira’s first century. These unique gifts providethe resources that allow Madeira to continue its tradition of excellence.

Eleanor Johnson Estes ’96, P’09Greenway Society Member

Maybe it’s her memories of Dr. Hager’s histo-ry class, Mr. Cai’s algebra class or perhapsit was her co-curriculum placement at

the Insect Zoo at the National History Museum, butEleanor Cromwell Johnson Estes’ time at Madeira willalways hold a special place in her heart. As a board-er, Eleanor’s eyes were opened when she came toMadeira from Alabama: “Madeira has students andteachers from all walks of life here in the United Statesand all over the world — I was, and am, so fortunate for the different points of view, ideas and people I encountered during my years at Madeira.”

When Eleanor’s step-daughter Campbellenrolled in 2007, Madeira’s significance in her lifebecame even greater. “I knew what a great experi-ence I had and watching Campbell learn the samethings, meet new friends and make the same memo-ries as I did, it reaffirmed why I loved the School.” As a proud alumna and parent, Eleanor has servedMadeira in a variety of ways including her positionas a Class Agent, a member of the Parent’s FundCommittee and her Reunion Committee.

After graduating from Madeira, Eleanor went onto Sewanee: The University of the South and the Uni-versity of Alabama at Birmingham from which shereceived her undergraduate and graduate degrees. She now lives in Mountain Brook, Alabama with herhusband, Claude, and their four children, Claude V,Campbell ’09, Dot and Cromwell. Active in her com-munity, Eleanor serves on various boards, includingThe Red Cross of Birmingham, and is a member of the Cathedral Church of the Advent.

By making a restricted bequest, Eleanor and her family have helped ensure the School’s futurethrough their promise of a sustainable and thought-ful gift. When she speaks about Madeira, her passionfor the School and for education is clear. “My hus-band and I truly believe in the power of giving back.Madeira has been a big part of our lives — from theeducation Campbell and I received there to theteachers who challenged me and the friends I made. I have chosen to become a member of The GreenwaySociety because I hope by giving back, that I can sup-port Madeira and help future generations have thechance to participate in something that has deeplytouched my life.”
