WEBSITE REVAMP

NEW MOULDER

We are excited to announce that we now offer dove-tail wedges on our mitered chops so you can easilyassemble frames yourself. This helps cut down coststwo ways: it’s less expensive than a pre-assembledframe, and the shipping will be less too!Triangular slots are routed into the ends on the backof each rail. To join the frame, the edges are glued anda butterfly-shaped plastic piece (aka key) is insertedinto each slot. The wedging of the keys provides thecorrect clamping pressure for the glue, and the endresult is a tight, perfectly aligned joint with no mark-ings on the face or sides. See page 4 for pictures.

We did a major overhaul on our website a few monthsago. Check it out: vermonthardwoods.com!

SUSTAINABLE WOOD

COLOR CHANGES WOOD DESCRIPTIONS

GRAINThe grain of wood looks different dependingon whether you're looking at the face of theboard or the edge of the board. The face of amoulding profile uses a specific side of theboard depending on the profile dimensions, and is specified on each profile page. For pictures of our finishes on face grain, seepages 8-9. To see the finishes on edge grain, visit vermonthardwoods.com/finishes.asp.

For some woods, such as Cherry andMahogany, aging is the crowning touch.Ultraviolet light, oxidation, and handling allcontribute to the patina of an old piece ofwood, whatever specie it is. However, Cherryand Mahogany respond to these effects morequickly and dramatically than many others. The most obvious resulting color change isusually within the first few years, thoughminor changes will take place for many years. In addition to our traditional natural finish,we offer a line of stained finishes that helpachieve a similar look without the wait time.

Contrary to popular belief, wood is a sustainable resource.Other than mahogany, our stock is United States hardwoodswhich, due to regulatory programs, are considered to be atlow risk for illegal and non-sustainable harvesting. In fact, our forests are growing in size. Here are a few facts about North American forests:

• Six trees are planted for every one harvested in the US • Forest growth exceeds harvesting by 47% • Each year, hardwood volume increases by 5.72 billion

cubic feet, even after harvests, fire, insects, and disease • The US has about the same amount of forest as in 1920

Deforestation continues to be a problem among exotic woods, such as mahogany, that are found in rainforests. Themahogany we buy is certified by the Forest StewardshipCouncil (FSC) to ensure that it comes from a well-managedforest that is not in danger of deforestation. It’s pretty common knowledge that trees clean the air by tak-ing carbon dioxide out and replacing it with oxygen. However, it is much less known that once trees start decom-posing, the process reverses and carbon dioxide is releasedback into the air. Cutting trees down before they decomposestops the decomposition process.

GUARANTEE

COMMON LAW OF BUSINESSIt’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse topay too little. When you pay too much, youlose a little money - that is all. When you paytoo little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable ofdoing the thing it was bought to do. The com-mon law of business balance prohibits payinga little and getting a lot - it can’t be done. Ifyou deal with the lowest bidder, it is well toadd something for the risk you run, and if youdo that you will have enough to pay for some-thing better.

We guarantee that you will be satisfied withthe quality of both material and workmanshipin all of our products. If you are not, pleasenotify us at once and we will take the neces-sary steps to correct the situation to your satis-faction. However, we do reserve the right tolimit such action if you have cut, finished, orjoined the moulding in any way.

Ash A coarse but generally straight-grained woodwith almost white sapwood. With open grain,it is very similar to the more popular Oak.

Basswood Fine straight grain with even texture. Verysoft and often has brown spots and streaks.Usually painted or covered with linen or silk.

Cherry Fine-textured wood that is usually straight-grained. Pinkish brown to light red with occa-sional black gum lines or pockets. A rich char-acter enhanced by aging.

Mahogany A medium-textured softer hardwood.Reddish brown to deep red. Characteristicdark color, like that of cherry, is brought on byaging.

Maple Hard, heavy, fine-textured wood. White to off-white with occasional crossbanding.

Red Oak Straight grain with coarse texture; very hard. What most people think of when you say“hardwood.”

Walnut Somewhat coarse and usually straightgrained, but can be very wavy. Rich darkbrown to purplish satin black, occasionally tanor streaked with lighter colors.

ORDERING GUIDELINESLENGTHCHOPS & FRAMESLength is 4’-8’ sticks, except Walnut, Bird’s Eye Maple, and Curly Maple may be as short as 3 feet. There is aminimum of 20’ per item. Orders of less than 20’ willbe billed at Square Cut Chop prices. Requests forspecified lengths will not be accepted. We have the following quantity tolerances:

up to 75’ -1’ to +4’over 75’ +/- 5%

You should expect color variations throughout alllength orders, so we recommend ordering 10-25%more than you need if purchasing to fill a specificorder.Length generally does not need to be cut for UPS, butrequesting shorter lengths may save on shipping.

Chops and frames are cut using the Fine Art Care andTreatment Standards (FACTS) terminology from theFRM-397 specifications. For your convenience, keypoints are listed on page 11.To calculate the footage you will be billed for a chopor frame, see Calculating the Cost on page 7 or visitour website for an easy-to-use calculator.

UPSIDE DOWNIf you’re going to use a cap moulding upside down, such as for a Strip Frame (page 6), you must specify“to be used upside down” so the back of the mould-ing will be checked for blemishes and finished insteadof the front. The following surcharges will apply:

Acopy of the certificate will be required.Frame shops serving the general public, galleries whodo their own framing, and those serving the art com-munity in a wholesale environment may qualify forwholesale pricing. Please inquire for details.

First list the profile number, then the wood, finish, and order type (Length, Mitered Chop, etc.).Length does not require the order type. Anychop/frame size without an order type specified willbe automatically classified as a Mitered Chop. For easier ordering, we have assigned codes for thewoods and finishes. Wood-finish codes can be foundon pages 8-9 and in each pricing table. When using a POS system, Finished Corner Framescan be accessed by adding “FC-” before the profile. Here are some examples in long and short form:

CREATING FRAMESSPACER & STRAINER

FLOATERS

STRIP FRAMES

When using the #900, #901, or #902 moulding, the stretcher simply lays onthe built-in bottom wing, where it is usually screwed from the bottom.

The #916 moulding needs a bottom shelf added; our #960 and #960-2strainers will fit nicely. Alternately, rather than joining two profiles your-self you can use our #917 moulding which already has that L shape. When ordering chops, add your canvas size to two times the "float space"you want and specify that as your frame size, which will be cut “exact”.

On the #915 moulding the stretcher may be attached directly to themoulding. For easier mounting, a screw eye placed every 8"-12" can beused to form an attachment point, or a wing may be added. An advantageof the #915 is that it can accommodate a wide variety of thicknesses ofstretcher bars.

To use spacer to create a strip frame, simply place the spacer along theside of the canvas and use nails to secure it. If ordering chopped spacersto be used this way, you must specify "inside dimensions" - we suggestordering oversize and trimming to fit.

To use cap moulding to create a strip frame, turn the cap upside down, set the canvas on the rabbet, and use an offset clip to secure them togeth-er by screwing into the bottom of each.If ordering moulding to be used this way, you must specify "to be usedupside down" so the back of the moulding will be checked for blemishesand finished (if applicable) instead of the front. There will be an addition-al charge for ordering moulding upside down - see page 5 for details.

Spacer may be attached with ATG tape (recommended), glued, or justfriction fit.The strainer may be either screwed or nailed from the inside or outside ofthe moulding.

A strip frame hugs the canvas. There are two ways to accomplish a strip frame: spacer or caps.

Floaters are designed for stretched canvases or panels, and a floater frame has a space between the edge of thecanvas and the face of the moulding. The purpose is twofold:

1. Functional: Since most canvases are painted all the way to the edge you don't want to cover any of it up2. Aesthetic: The frame literally appears to "float" around the painting - there is an actual space between them

CALCULATING THE COSTTo get an idea of how much moulding is required to make a frame, you can use our chart below. Note, howev-er, that it is just a guideline. If you are purchasing length to do your own chops we suggest ordering at least10% more, and as much as 25% more if the frames are large or if you’re ordering less than 50’.With few exceptions, this chart displays the footage we will charge you when ordering chops from us. If youwant to know exactly, call us for a quote and we will give you the actual amount from our computer system, including all surcharges or discounts that may be applicable on your individual order (not including shipping).

HOW TO CALCULATE THE COST OF A CHOP OR FRAMEThis process can be tedious - for an easier way, use the calculator on our website! There is also a calculator atthe bottom of each profile’s webpage.

1. Calculate the United Inches of your chop or frameUnited Inches = frame dimension length + frame dimension width

(If ordering by Outside Dimension, use the dimensions you will order with)If ordering a Straight Cut Chop, add two more inches

2. Find the width key of the moulding in question (shown below the profile drawing)If ordering by Outside Dimension, use width key A

3. Go down the width key column in the chart below until you find the first number that is higher than theUnited Inches of your chop or frame

4. Follow the row left to the feet column - that is how many feet you will be charged for5. Multiply the number of feet by the cost per foot listed in the pricing table next to the profile6. If ordering a mitered chop with dovetail wedges, add the fee listed below the profile drawing

DISCOUNTS

While we may have some in stock, often the stock will need to be runto order, which means that typicallead time will be 1-2 weeks.

You must order at least 100’ peritem (e.g. 100’ 120 Maple and 100’132 Cherry, not 50’ each of 120Maple and 132 Cherry). However,if we have less than 100’ in stockyou may take what we have.

Discounts are based on totalYankee Heritage order.

Many people love our natural solid hardwoods, but can’t justify spendingthe money for the ultra-high yield stock that has become our standard. For those who don’t demand long lengths that are straight and clear, wechallenge you to find a better value than our Yankee Heritage lineup.

This product is perfect for those doing mostly smaller pieces (less than 20x 24) or if you want more “character” (the trademark of solid wood) inyour frames.

Note, however, that this is not just “the junk.” We scrap material we don’tthink is useable for anything. In fact many people tell us our YankeeHeritage is as good as or better than some companies’ regular stock.

Here are some key points: •All Yankee Heritage mouldings are machine sanded the same as our

regular mouldings. •Yankee Heritage is only available Raw in the profiles listed below. •Availability of the Yankee Heritage line is not limited to stock on

hand or bundle sizes - you can order as much as you like, wheneveryou like (see Minimums to the right).

Try an order today and see the VALUE of Yankee Heritage.
