Note: The above notice in respect of adjustments to repayment rates will not apply during any period when the loan is at a fi xed rate. If you or your dependants intend to use the property as a principal place of residence, you must show evidence of mortgage protection insurance, unless you are exempt under the Consumer Credit Act 1995 (you can seek this insurance through us or from other sources). Maximum loan to value of Owner Occupier Residential Properties 92% of purchase price or valuation whichever is lower. Normal Lending levels are subject to monthly repayment burden, typically not exceeding c.35% of borrowers disposable income and will vary according to individual circumstances. Loan requests considered on the basis of proof of income, fi nancial status and demonstrated repayment capacity (including capacity to repay at higher interest rates). Loans not available to people under 18. Mortgage loans by their nature require to be secured by a mortgage and charge on the subject property. A typical €100,000 20 year Variable interest rate mortgage for an Owner Occupier Residential Property with LTV greater than 80% will have monthly repayments of €578.93 APR 3.54%. If the APR does not vary during the term of the mortgage, the total cost of credit i.e. total amount repayable less the amount of the mortgage, would be €38,943.20. The effect of a 1% increase in interest rates for such a mortgage will add €52.28 to monthly repayments. Lending criteria, terms and conditions apply. Penalising our people topay back the gamblingdebts of bond holders!
Five-years-old Rowan Lawlor at the household tax protestmarch in Skibbereen last Saturday afternoon.
BY CAROL GILBERT
‘IF I go into a bookies, bet on ahorse and lose my money, willthe government pay me backthe money I have lost?’ askedEd Harper, during the first in aseries of speeches at the protestdemonstration against house-hold taxes, held in Skibbereenlast Saturday.
Ed, who has lived in WestCork for 33 years, likened thepayment of €1.25 billion to un-secured bond holders as nomore than a gambling debt andsaid bond holders were nomore than gamblers, conclud-ing: ‘This government is pay-ing back the bond holders’gambling debt and penalisingthe poor, sick, young and eld-erly to do so.’
Despite the drizzle, cold, wetand thoroughly miserable con-ditions last Saturday upwardsof 200 people joined theprotest against the householdtax, septic tank charge, watercharges and taxes so compre-hensive, ‘an air tax’ was sug-gested as the next tax to be im-posed by the governmentbecause ‘everyone has tobreathe!’
Billed as a ‘fun protest,’ bag-piper John Madden fromCrossbarry and a number ofbodhran players led themarchers on a circuitous routefrom the Fairfield to theSquare, Skibbereen, so theycould demonstrate outside theSkibbereen office of CorkSouth West TD, Mr Noel Har-rington.
Most marchers carried plac-ards, displaying statementssuch as ‘Empty promises,’ ‘Cit-izens United We Stand, DividedWe Fall,’ ‘Stealing our Future’and ‘Sold Out.’ A huge bannercarried the message: ‘The Gov-ernment has sold Ireland’ssoul.’
As the crowd chanted in uni-son, ‘Can’t Pay! Won’t Pay!’passing drivers honked theirhorns in support and contin-ued to indicate their supportduring the hour long speech-es, which were unanimous intheir condemnation of taxesbeing imposed.
Not to registerWith only 5% of the popula-
tion having registered for the
household tax or septic tankcharges, people were asked notto register with speakers say-ing if enough people refused toregister, the government wouldhave to think again as theycould not prosecute everyone. There was condemnation ofthe politicians’ gravy trainrolling on while they demandedpain, sacrifice and austerityfrom the sick, the weak and themost vulnerable.
John Cronin, speaking as amember of the Septic TankCharges Campaign, warned ofthe sweeping legislation beingintroduced and powers that in-spectors would have. Hewarned: ‘The inspectors can-not come into your dwelling, but it will be their opinionwhich will decide about thecondition of your septic tankand the public has no recourseto courts, EPA or TDs to objectto that opinion.’ He cited thesituation elsewhere, where itcost septic tank owners an av-erage of €3,800 to bring theirsystems up to the requiredstandard.
Contact councillorsHe encouraged protestors to
contact their town and countycouncillors saying they werethe people who needed to standup to the government: ‘If theywill not, get them out and get inpeople who can!’
One of the speakers, Rob Hy-land, encouraged people not toregister and to stand togethersaying: ‘We must remain unit-ed. We must be really carefulotherwise they will pick us off,one by one.’
He said: ‘The government isrobbing the old, poor, youngand needy, and we need to fightnow so that we may be cele-brated by future generationsrather than condemned bythem!’
Another speaker said thiswas the first opportunity thepublic had to stand togetherand let the government knowexactly what the peoplethought of their failed promis-es.
