• Sarah Breedlove was born on December 23, 1867 to recently freed slaves in the south.
• Her parents died when she was 7.
• When she was young she worked as a farm laborer, working from the field up to the wash tub.
• She got married at 14 to escape abuse and had her only daughter 3 years later.
• Widowed at 16, she moved to live with her brothers in St. Louis and join community organizations that exposed her to a new way to view the world.
• During the 1890’s, Sarah’s hair began suffering a scalp condition that caused her hair to fall out.
• Sarah developed a product that helped her hair grow.
• She began selling her Wonderful Hair Grower using the name from her third husband Madam C J Walker.
• Because of the amazing products and her business sense, Madam C J Walker’s business grew quickly.
• She trained other black women to sell her products so they too could become successful.
• Madam C J Walker became one of the first Americans to earn a million dollars in their lifetime.
• Madam C J Walker died on May 25, 1919
