Operations and Maintenance

Environmentally Responsible, Safe, Economically Beneficial Spent Fuel Solutions

Managing Long-term Nuclear Waste Safe, efficient and economical storage of spent nuclear fuel is essential in the nuclear power industry. Centralized dry intermediate storage is required for many decades due to limited availability of long-term storage. Our internationally-recognized and installed MACSTOR® system is an environmentally responsible, above ground, dry storage system that allows nuclear power utilities to safely store irradiated nuclear fuel in the most economical manner.

SNC-Lavalin—Reliable, Proven Being able to provide safe and reliable solutions through superior technology is vital in the nuclear industry. With more than a century of experience in the power sector, and over 60 years invested in the nuclear industry, SNC-Lavalin develops nuclear projects, products and services tailored to our clients’ needs. Safety, quality, innovation and excellence in project execution are the values we live by every day.

MACSTOR Advantages 1. Compact and cost-effective modular construction for reduced

area requirements > Space is often limited for intermediate storage of spent

nuclear fuel. The MACSTOR system requires a relatively small storage area compared to other systems.

2. Highly efficient irradiated fuel heat dissipation using natural air circulation

> The MACSTOR system’s air-cooling system requires none of the additional equipment (e.g., fans or blowers) that is common to most storage systems.

3. Virtually maintenance free with no appreciable degradation mechanisms

> Inspection tubes allow for quick verification of the fuel sheath containment integrity and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards.

4. Meets stringent regulatory and environmental standards > The MACSTOR system has no harmful radioactive emissions.

The robust design of its concrete structure allows safe access for operating and maintenance personnel. When fully loaded with fuel, the dose rate from a MACSTOR system module is much lower in comparison with other storage designs.

> The MACSTOR system is seismically qualified, designed to withstand tornado winds as well as airplane and military missile impacts.

> The MACSTOR system meets IAEA safeguard requirements. 5. Module life management—long-term fuel storage capability of

50+ years > Construction materials are carefully selected to ensure

trouble-free storage for the design life. > Selection and combination of materials in the design could

extend design life to 100 years. > Each cylinder is made of thick carbon steel plates and covered

with a corrosion-resistant protective coating tailored to the particular site’s environmental conditions.

Our nuclear team strives to “think like an operator,” offering solutions to nuclear waste storage issues before they arise.

Our superior customer service is backed by our international expertise in long-term waste storage.

An Ideal Waste SolutionThe MACSTOR system is a proven technology that is ideally suited to satisfy irradiated fuel storage needs of nuclear power utilities and can store LWR, PHWR, AGR, VVER, and RBMK-irradiated fuel. Importantly, the MACSTOR system technology meets all local and international regulatory requirements.

The MACSTOR system delivers solution that is safe, reliable, functional and economical and one you can trust. We use our vast experience and renowned industry knowledge to support customers through all phases of a MACSTOR project: design, manufacture, construction, staff training, commissioning and operation.

Originally designed in 1990 as an efficient and cost-effective method for irradiated fuel storage needs, MACSTOR is backed by a proven history of expertise in concrete-based storage systems. Already successfully adopted throughout Canada, China, Korea and Romania, the MACSTOR system has passed stringent environmental, public acceptance and regulatory reviews.
