Macro Analysis

Purpose • Most films have the purpose of making as much money as they can,

and by doing this they would need to fill a certain gap, and follow things to make the film successful so it appeals to their aimed audience. The Descent was linked to the thriller genre but the main genre of the film is horror so it’s important the creators of the film would follow specific roles of a successful horror film to make this a good horror film which appeals to its chosen audience.

Genre • The film fits into quite a few genres which appeals to a wider

audience. The film begins with some drama when Sarah finds out she’s been cheated on, and her child dies along with her husband in a car crash, with the film also showing signs of adventure as they explore a massive cave. • The story of the film literally shows each of them watching each other

die before their own eyes. A big amount of the budget was spent on making the scenery, and especially on making the cave. But as all this was set out, it’s clear to see that the main genre of this film is a horror/thriller but also fits into other categories.

Form The film involves a basic story line, and this is important for a lot of films especially horror films because it makes the audience more interested, and less confused about what’s going on. As the film has a very linear story line, it’s known to be the most simple narrative style for a film to follow. Flashbacks of scenes in the film is used so the audience can keep track of what’s happened, and makes it easy for them to keep track of what’s going on. An example of this is when Sarah has a few flashbacks of her husband, and child dying in a car crash.

Production Process• The production process involves a lot of pre-production that involves

funding the film, hiring crew, setting locations, and making the script. When the film crew created the cave, it had to be one of the most important stages whilst creating the film as it’s a big challenge. The production is what takes place to get the footage used in the film, and the filming of every shot is used well such as creating the crawlers, and giving them that creepy look. More production such as make up would be done for hours, just like applying make up on the crawlers.
