Notes From the Nurse

In an effort to keep our students and staff healthy and ready to learn, I would like to take this time to review Macon Elementary’s policy for school attendance and illness. Many illnesses are treated at home with comfort measures, fluids and rest. Some are (05/02/2011) more serious, requiring a visit to a primary care provider. In either case, students should be recovered before coming back to school. This will help prevent spreading the illness as well as ensure that your child is feeling well enough to learn and participate in the classroom settings. The following is found on page 13 of the student handbook: IV. Contagious Illness Management

Children with contagious illness should not be brought to school. Students should not come to school if during the previous 24 hours they exhibit any of the following symptoms:

● A temperature of 100 degrees or greater ● Vomiting or diarrhea ● An unusual or unexplained rash, unrelenting and itchy ● Persistent cough ● Told by a doctor they are still contagious ● Children with chickenpox are to remain at home a minimum of six (6) days after

the first appearance of the rash. They may return to school when all lesions are crusted over.

It is also preferred that students be fever free without the assistance of medication for 24 hours. This is also a good time to review hand washing, covering coughs, rest and nutrition practices with your child and family. Please notify the school office if your child will be absent due to illness. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
