Age Friendly Communities Network

An “Age-Friendly Community” – an inclusive and accessible urban or suburban

environment that encourages active and healthy aging.

AARP’s Age-Friendly Communities Network – focus on improving the elements of

communities that enhance independent living with a goal of having older citizens take a more active role in their communities.

WHO maintains eight broad domains that help influence the health and quality of life of older people living all around the world.

AARP’s Role • Work will be expanded into Georgia, Kansas,

Michigan, and the District of Columbia in 2012.

• Two communities in Georgia are being invited to engage in the project with AARP GA – Macon-Bibb and Smyrna.

• AARP Network targets some of the environmental, economic, and social factors that influence the well-being of older adults living in the United States.

An Invitation to Macon-Bibb

The AARP Office of International Affairs will administer the program

– local contact will be AARP GA State Office

The WHO will automatically admit any AARP-designated community in the United States into its Network.

Communities. • Inclusion in a global network of communities

committed to giving their older residents the opportunity to live rewarding, productive, and safe lives.

• Mentoring and peer review evaluation by other member cities, in the U.S. and abroad.

• Recognition by both AARP and WHO of the community’s commitment to become more age-friendly.

Criteria & Process

Communities participating in the program commit to a cycle of assessing and improving their age-friendliness.

The proposed process for admission will be: 1. AARP state office identifies community

2. Letter submitted to AARP GA State Office indicating commitment.

3. AARP advises WHO and community is admitted to the Network.

4. Certificates of membership from AARP and WHO issued

5. Statewide public ceremony recognizing membership

Next Steps Within 24 months of entering the project: • Establish an advisory citizens’ committee that includes

the active engagement of older adults; • Secure a local municipal council resolution to actively

support, promote and work towards becoming age-friendly;

• Establish a robust and concrete plan of action that responds to the needs identified by older adults in the community;

• Commit to measuring activities, reviewing action plan outcomes and reporting on them publicly.

Network Member At the end of the first two years:

• The WHO will assess Macon-Bibb action plan and certify that the plan is consistent with WHO principals, is realistic, and ambitious enough to lead to meaningful local improvements in age-friendliness.

At the end of five years:

• If sufficient progress has been made, the WHO and AARP will recognize those achievements and membership will be extended another five years with periodic review by WHO.
