Speakers SessionsSessions

Jade Stevens Making phonics magical (3 to 8-year-olds)

If we want children to develop a healthy lifelong enjoyment of reading and writing, their first experiences should be motivating and positive. In this session we will look at ways of adding a touch of magic to this process. Using a systematic approach to presenting sounds, the session will feature interactive, engaging and multi-sensory activities - both traditional and digital - to practise key stages, including blending and segmenting. It will also include handy tips for tracking pupils’ progress. Come along and find out how we can help our learners become confident and happy readers.

Jane Martin Promoting creativity in the art classroom (6 to 8-year-olds)

The Art classroom is the perfect place for pupils to explore the creative process and develop English language skills in a natural way. In this session we will focus on the skills, techniques and materials pupils need to flourish as young artists and share a variety of art lessons and projects that inspire creativity, imagination and self-expression.

Connie Hatwell Flashcard games and activities (3 to 8 year-olds)

Flashcards have been an extremely useful tool for teaching languages to all ages, and even more so when teaching very young students who are yet to develop literacy skills. Flashcards can be used to: revise, recall or introduce new vocabulary, provoke dialogue, add meaning and check comprehension when using songs or stories, provide a backdrop for emotional intelligence activities and so on, the list is almost endless. Flashcards can be downloaded, homemade, cut out from magazines, provided for you in teachers’ packs or children themselves can make their own mini versions. Here are some tried and tested games which provide fun and effective learning for the busiest of little minds.

Connie Hatwell Motivating children to really love their English (6 to 8-year-olds)

Nowadays most pupils can be a very demanding audience, constantly being bombarded with stimuli, from Spiderman to Pokemon, from computer games to karate lessons - the list is endless. As English teachers the need for motivational activities has never been greater to keep those active minds coming back for more. Breathe life into your English classes using fun, effective and motivating games which can compete for your pupils’ attention just as much as any PC can.

Richard Bradley Motivational reading and writing techniques (8 to 12-year-olds)

In this session we examine and carry out activities that will help children develop their reading and writing skills in an enjoyable way. Included in the session are techniques to improve the children’s understanding of what they are reading and creative post-reading activities to help embed the texts in their memories.

Richard Bradley The princess and the pea: bringing simple stories to life (8 to 12-year-olds)

In this session we look at eleven motivating ways to activate learning through the fairy tale ‘The Princess and the Pea.’ In this very hands-on session we will explore the use of multiple intelligences, drama and music to reach every one of our students.

Donna Shaw Cooperative learning in the Primary classroom (8 to 12-year-olds)

We know that cooperative learning increases motivation, promotes achievement and helps develop learner autonomy and interpersonal skills. However, pair and small group work is not always easy to set up in the Primary classroom. In this practical session we will consider how we can organise our classroom for cooperative learning and will look at a variety of techniques and activities that enable children to work together in a fun, caring and productive way.

Emma Thomas From print to pixels: making the most of your digital book (8 to 12-year-olds)

Digital materials are becoming more and more common in today’s classroom. When used well they can add variety to our lessons and help us engage and motivate our pupils. This practical session will look at a range of activities using digital books, and provide some handy tips for effective classroom management.

Kate Pickering Frameworks for speaking: the control continuum (Batxillerat)

Many Bachillerato students still fail to speak with confidence, something which is all the more important given the ‘Ampliación de Inglés’ option. The session will look at a series of activity frameworks for supporting spoken output and increasing student confidence when speaking.

Kate Pickering Do it, do it again (Batxillerat)

We often use classroom texts in a pretty wasteful way: do ‘em, forget ‘em. This session looks at why we should engage more with texts, and explores a variety of frameworks and formats for getting maximum value out of them.

Susan Dreger Cool techy tools for 21st Century learners (ESO & Batxillerat)

Nowadays, it’s a difficult task engaging our digital natives. By using Web 2.0 tools to captivate our 21st century learners, the aim is to engage them in tasks which enable them to be creative, active learners. English has to be used as a means of communicating and by integrating collaborative tools, students are able to create and share their work with others within their class, school or around the globe!

Joanna Gore Motivating teenagers and an introduction to LETeens (ESO & Batxillerat)

This talk will consider the issues and challenges involved in motivating teenagers to learn English, and offer practical tips and solutions. I will suggest various approaches to engage and motivate teens and demonstrate some tried and tested activities that you can use with your classes. The session will also introduce the British Council’s LearnEnglish Teens website and all it has to offer for motivating your teens in and out of the classroom.
