Speakers Sessions Sessions
Russell Stannard Tools that can revolutionize our feedback and reflection (Plenary)
In 2006, I began pioneering work on using video for providing feedback to students. The work created widespread publicity with national press interest, an appearance on TV and inclusion in a report submitted to the UK government. In this talk l will talk about how the idea has developed into a tool for both reflection and feedback. I will also report on some of the other studies now taking place around the world and in the UK. This is practical talk with lots of examples of how feedback and reflection can be produced in completely new ways. This work has now been presented in 26 countries.
Elspeth Pollock Teaching for external exams – can it be fun? (ESO)
Do exam classes have to bore everyone? Let’s look at some original ideas and techniques to keep your students focused and motivated on their exam classes.
Eduardo Valencia Gamification and game based learning (ESO)
Computer games are today an important part of most children’s leisure lives. Researchers, teachers and designers of learning resources are beginning to ask how this powerful new medium might be used to support children’s learning. This session aims to demonstrate how the use of Educational videogames and Gamification techniques at schools can be effective tools for deeper student engagement and achievement in English language training.
Kate Pickering Frameworks for speaking: the control continuum (Batxillerat)
Many Batxillerat students still fail to speak with confidence, something which is all the more important given the ‘Ampliación de Inglés’ option. The session will look at a series of activity frameworks for supporting spoken output and increasing student confidence when speaking.
Patricia Reilly Mindfulness: a tool for life, a tool for learning (Batxillerat)
Mindfulness is the new buzz word all over the world! In schools where it is being taught, teachers say students are happier, calmer, more fulfilled and get on better with others. They concentrate and learn better and it helps them cope with stress and anxiety and to relax. Come and find out what mindfulness is, experience some mindfulness activities and discover how they can help you and your students.
Roy Norris Where’s the grammar in the First Certificate (EOIs & Private Language Schools)
Students’ understanding of grammar and their ability to use it correctly is tested in almost all of the papers in the First exam. It’s there in one form or another in each of the Use of English tasks; it’s assessed in the Writing and Speaking papers, and it’s even lurking in the Reading tasks. We’ll be looking at what and where exactly the grammar is in the exam and considering ways of raising students’ awareness of this.
Nik Peachey Developing digital literacy (EOIs & Private Language Schools)
Digital literacies are becoming increasingly important to students and teachers around the world, but are they and how can we enable students to develop those literacies in the English language classroom? In this talk I will be exploring the issue of digital literacy and looking at how we can adapt our teaching practices to support their development.
