Mackintosh Academy Curriculum Snapshot
Mathematics: For the next two weeks we will continue our study of money. Based on our assessments those who have learned the name and value of each coin we will move onto counting coins , showing equivalent values and “purchasing” items with coins. Those who need a bit more time with identifying coins will engage in a variety of activities to master this skill prior to moving onto more complex tasks. Reading: Our reading strategy for this week fall under the CAFÉ section “Expand Vocabulary.” We will learn about various ways to play with words such as alliteration, rhyme and onomatopoeia. Students will continue to work on more individualized reading needs through a variety of small group and one on one activities. Writing: For the next two weeks the students will be compiling their various how-to pieces into a book. They will add various text features to their book such as headings, a table of contents, at least one bold word, and at least one label. They will then have the opportunity to share their “published” how-to book with the class. Unit of Inquiry: The students have been enthusiastically exploring a variety of occupations and volunteer work. Having such excellent guest speakers has really added to their learning scope and understanding. Thank you to all that have volunteered. We are excited to have several more guest speakers visiting our class this week. We will also be guiding the children toward identifying their own personal gifts and determining how they can use these gifts to better their learning and home communities. We will also encourage them to think about which occupations their gifts and interests correlate with well. Next week the students will complete their summative assessment which includes dressing up to show an occupation they may like to do as an adult and presenting to the class their selected job. Details for this assignment, including the scoring rubric, can be found in their Friday Folder. If your child is not present in the afternoon this assignment is optional for them. If you have any questions please email us.

Quotes of the Week:
During car line, several students had opened their

wouldn’t lose anything out of them. One student
quickly closed hers and said with a serious tone,
“Now it’s an iPad.
One student was innocently referring to a
motorcycle as a “Donorcycle.”
While playing with the dollhouse with another
student, one stopped for a moment and shared in
a serious tone, “If you lose all your teeth you
lose your wife.”
During dramatic play one student held up a $20 bill
and said to his classmate this is Andrew Jackson.
He then quizzed her asking, “Who is this?” She
replied, “Michael Jackson.”
This student shared her knowledge about
Chinese New Year and shared Chinese New Year candy with the
class. He mother also volunteered her time to
share additional information about this
holiday and answer student questions.
This student, also shared his knowledge of the Chinese New Year and brought in traditional red envelopes for each student.
The coins within were used during math throughout the week and
