CEREMONY

Chapter President Emeritus Jerry Headley and Chapter

Squadron Liaison Galen Narimatsu attended the 3rd

Brigade

Deployment Ceremony at Schofield Barracks on March 4

2011 During a Squadron formation on March 3 Jerry and

Galen had the honor of adding two new campaign streamers

to the Squadron colors Afterwards Jerry made the

presentation of the new Mackenzie Trophy to the Squadron

on behalf of our Chapter The following day during the

Brigade deployment ceremony they participated in the

casing of the 3-4 Cavalry Squadron colors for deployment

to Afghanistan

VIETNAM GUIDON DEPLOYS TO

AFGHANISTAN

When Apache Troop 3-4 Cavalry Squadron deployed to

Afghanistan in March they took with them an Alpha Troop

Guidon that was in Vietnam in 1966 SFC (Ret) Art

Bonevich a 2nd

Plt Scout Track Commander at the time

had it made about 4 months before the end of his tour in

December 1966 and it was signed by many A Troopers Art

served in A Troop from 1963 through 1966 Art donated the

guidon to Apache Troop prior to their deployment Below

are texts of emails exchanged between Art and Squadron

Artie I just received the A Troop guidon you sent With your permission I want to take it to Afghanistan and use it as a historic item of display I will photograph it in various ceremonies giving it a service life of over 45 years I have inspected it and have deemed it serviceable for the mission At the conclusion of the deployment I will frame the guidon and use your photos and those that I take to illustrate its long 46 year history to the Squadron Please inform your former brethren that the A Troop colors of 1966 have been called to action in Afghanistan Thanks for sending these itemswe will be honored to have them for posterity Regards and Respect CSM Mark A Kiefer 3-4 CAV CSM

Several former members of the 1st Platoon B Troop

gathered in Louisville KY for a surprise visit to Herb

Headley also a former 1st platoon member Herb was a TC

on B16 tank in 6768 and is battling cancer The short visit

included a trip to the Patton Armor Museum at Fort Knox

SQUADRON NEWS

Raiders As many of you have hopefully heard we are doing well here in Eastern Nangahar Province Afghanistan Everyone is staying busy between patrols in over a dozen districts base defense operations and providing logistical support to over 500 personnel here at Forward Operating Base Shinwar FOB Shinwar where the majority of the Squadron operates from previously held less than 200 Soldiers So moving into the base and beginning operations was also accompanied by base improvements and challenges We continue to work every day to make it a more comfortable and more secure place to stay Our cooks are cooking our food our Troopers maintain their own vehicles and we provide our own security with the assistance of Afghan Security Guards Being 10 years into this war we are the closest thing to roughing it as you will see in most parts of Afghanistan We have also been greeted as friends here by the locals and are working diligently to make their local governments and security forces more effective Eastern Nangahar is one of the most prosperous and safest places in all of Afghanistan People openly walk the marketplaces and sit in the parks of Jalalabad and the other villages of the area Thursday nights the area is a frenzy of young kids playing cricket followed by Fridays mosque visits and relaxation Currently the locals are working hard to harvest the vast fields of wheat that line the beautiful landscape of mountains and rivers This month has been a month of reconnaissance as our Cavalry Scouts were out learning the people and places of our new area We have found that it is an exciting time for local governance and the beginning of an important transition as district governors and Shuras (their city councils) are starting to receive funds from the national capital Kabul to pay for salaries maintenance costs and projects The program is called the District Delivery Program and it is hopefully the final step in connecting the local district governments to province province to the national capital Our main goal in this process is to provide security support governance and assist in the economic development of the Province We couldnt have asked for a more worthwhile mission We all hope you are well back at home and your letters packages warm wishes and nowadays Facebook posts and e-mails really do mean the world to us Thank you for all your support and we look forward to updating you all with more information and pictures Trust me when I say Scouts are out and were working hard to make you all proud Prepared and Loyal LTC Jerry Turner

ORPHANS OF FOREIGN WARS At our last

business meeting the Association approved support for

helping war orphans Specifically there are many

thousands of Iraqi children that have been orphaned by

the war The Association sent over $210000 in aid to

Iraq for helping fund an orphanage in Baghdad Our

Chaplain Dennis Roe is helping to oversee this endeavor

through the mission agency he serves In future issues of

our newsletter Chaplain Roe will provide updates and

pictures of the orphanage and the children we are helping

Your mission is fulfilled Former squadron CSM Wilbur Duggins passed away Friday April 15 at his home in Lebanon Junction Kentucky after a long fought battle with cancer He had a brilliant military career having been stationed in Fort Kobbe Panama Canal Zone multiple locations in Germany Fort Knox and two tours with our squadron He was one of the Armyrsquos youngest sergeant majors at age 30 During his career he received numerous decorations including the Silver Star Bronze Star and Purple Heart He was a consummate professional and cared deeply for the officers and men that he served with After his retirement in 1970 he went on to a successful career in real estate and construction He was an avid fisherman and loved taking his family on fishing trips One of his best days was when they caught more than 100 crappie Having a fish fry was one of his best moments At the 3-4 CAVrsquos first reunion in 1988 in northern Virginia when the group was asked if they wanted to hold another reunion Wilbur spoke up to host it in the Fort Knox area He and his friend also a former 3-4 CAV 1SG John Hollern put together a reunion at the VFW in Vine Grove and had a great Blue Grass band for entertainment However Wilbur didnrsquot make it He had suffered a heart attack just days before the reunion and was in the hospital at Fort Knox Wilbur did make future reunions until his health no longer permitted him to travel He had hoped to be with us in Nashville but that will not come to pass Hersquos at Fiddlerrsquos Green with his favorite colonel and friend former SCO Bob McGowan He will be missed but fondly remembered

VIETNAM-ERA OCS GRADUATES VIEW MEMORIAL PLAQUE

On September 11 2009 fourteen graduates of the very first Vietnam-era Armor OCS course held at Ft Knox paid a

visit to Recruiting Command Headquarters to view the memorial plaque that dedicates part of Building 1307 to their

OCS classmate Lt George P Rogers Lt Rogers the class honor graduate was killed in action in 1967 while serving

with B Troop 34 Cavalry 25th Infantry Division Douglas Smith USAREC public affairs officer at the time said ldquoIt

was such an honor to meet the classmates of Lt Rogers I was of course familiar with the memorial plaque in Bldg

1307 that honors him but to hear their first-hand recollections of him and what it was like to go through OCS in the

1960s gave me a much more personal connectionrdquo A classmate said ldquoTo us he was more than a plaque on the wallrdquo

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is offering bronze medallions signifying the deceasedrsquos

status as a Veteran for attachment to existing privately purchased headstones or markers Under
