Dear Parents, Staff and Students

The Best of the Best It is the time of the year when our Year 12 students Major Projects for the HSC are completed and submitted or performed for HSC marking. The start of the process has resulted in a very busy week at Mackellar.

Our HSC Textiles and Design students’ Major Projects to be submitted for marking by the Board of Studies are absolutely stunning. They demonstrate the enormous talent and commitment of both our teachers and students in producing such beautiful pieces.

W@M

We, the 2018/2019 Prefects, have officially entered our first term as Mackellar Leaders. We are all extremely excited and nervous to embark on this new journey together, as we learn how to work cohesively in organising various school events and representing Mackellar to the wider community. Our first event as Prefects was the promotion of Education Week, aligning with the theme, ‘Today’s Schools - Creating Tomorrow’s World’. To mark this occasion, we handed out free cookies and organised a series of posters that celebrated the success of past Mackellar students.

On Friday of Week 5, we had our Prefect Planning Day, on which we brainstormed ideas, organised schedules and mapped out numerous initiatives. This planning day has ignited enthusiasm throughout the prefect body, and we are all excited to see our plans come to life in events including Mahboba’s Breakfast, Multicultural Day and numerous charity and community initiatives. It was a great day to explore ideas and gain a greater understanding of each individual’s strengths, skills and interests.

Mahboba’s Promise Breakfast will be held on Monday September 10th from 7:30 – 9:30am and it would be wonderful to see all Year 11 and their mothers and female relatives there to support this worthy charity.

Annabelle (Y11) for her competing in the NSW CHS Tennis Championships Holly (Y7) for her 2nd place in the Regional Yrs 7-8 Orienteering Championships The Touch Football and Junior Netball teams for being Zone champions Sarah (Y7) for her being a finalist in the Northern Beaches Art Prize Christine Del Gallo, Principal

P&C NEWS -

The P&C has made a significant contribution to the costs associated with the current renovation of the science labs at Mackellar, and the 5 September 2018 General P&C meeting will include a tour of the upgraded science labs. The meeting will commence at the earlier time of 7:00PM in the Staff Common Room, from where we will go on a tour of the new labs. Joining us on the tour and giving a quick talk about the grant that has provided some of the money required for the upgrading will be Mr James Griffin, MP for Manly.

Following the tour we will reconvene in the Staff Common Room for the regular General P&C meeting.

All parents are welcome to the tour and meeting. If any parents have items of a general/broader nature which they wish to raise/speak to, at the September P&C meeting please, both, come along and email the item to P&C Secretary, Fifi Spechler [email protected] to ensure it can be included on the Agenda.

The P&C meetings this year have enjoyed an increased attendance and an agenda helps with the efficient and timely running of the meeting. We are all aware of how precious time is to parents. Late items can usually be raised in General Business but prior knowledge of issues to be discussed allows for preparation and attendance of parents interested in those items. Please note items/issues for discussion at P&C meetings cannot relate to a specific student.

Looking forward to seeing parents at the meeting and tour of the science labs, again at the earlier time of 7:00pm, Wednesday 5 September, 2018

LIBRARY UPDATE

Half way through the term and we are getting close to the best school event of the year: BOOK PARADE!!! With this year’s theme, “Find Your Treasure,” the Library is looking sharp with some new displays and decorations. The theme is encouraging the girls to not only find importance and treasure in their reading adventures, but to also look at what it is that they hold special in their lives. Currently in the Library is a treasure wall that is filled with responses to the question: “What do you treasure.” Great responses included friends, extracurricular activities, family, their heritage and culture. On Monday of Week 6 we turned the treasure responses into craft activities. A MakerSpace was held with tasks including making friendship bracelets and bookmarks for our avid readers. The girls produced some creative and exciting bracelets, with great patterns and gave them to each other. We even had teachers join in, with Mrs Naidu using her expertise to craft some awesome bookmarks. Week 6 was kept busy with a treasure hunt taking place on the Thursday. Our book club members put on their game faces and raced around the school, completing challenges and tasks. Groups of four were tasked with performing Shakespeare, searching for clues in the Library and inventing their own Book Club mascot. The girls all worked wonderfully together, ending with winners all-round! Book Parade is being held on the 5th of September, the Wednesday of Week 7. Remind all you can about creating your costume and taking part in this exciting event. Teachers and students alike will be donning the costumes to recreate the characters from their favourite books. This year, the Parade coincides with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s Great Book Swap fundraiser. The idea is to swap a favourite book in exchange for another, for a gold coin donation. Last year, the Indigenous Literacy Foundation raised over $190,000 from the Great Book Swap and this year their goal is to raise $300,000 to gift 30,000 new books to remote communities who have few to none. After all, how can you learn to read without books? We cannot wait to see everyone enjoying Book Parade and wearing some fantastic costumes!

GRADE SPORT REPORT - Congratulations to our grade sport teams who made and competed in the Zone Final on the 22nd of August. These included Junior and Senior Soccer, Junior and Senior Netball, and Touch. Well done to all students who played grade sport this session and represented the school in Junior Netball and Touch. The Touch and Junior Netball teams were successful in winning the Zone Final and now go on to compete in the Super Zone final on the 29th of August. Well done girls!

Session 3 sport starts on September the 12th and runs until the end of the year.

PASS SKI CAMP 2018 - On Sunday 5th of August, 96 PASS students from Years 9 and 10 headed to the snow for Ski Camp. The week was an amazing display of weather, starting with blizzard-like conditions with guess-the-bump whiteout vision and fresh snow falling. Throughout the week the girls were tested with falls, bumps and bruises as well as success stories and hilarious adventures of T-bar misfortunes. The week finished with blue skies, amazing views of the mountain and Mackellar girls carving up the slopes. Thanks to teachers Ms Saunders, Ms Jones, Ms Rob, Ms Darsley and Ms Adams for an all-round amazing and unforgettable week.

OPEN GIRLS KNOCKOUT TOUCH TEAM 2018 - On the 14th and 15th of August, our knockout touch football team competed in the final 10 series held on the Central Coast. The girls played 5 games over the two days and were narrowly defeated in the semi final, 4-3, to the eventual champions. The team’s efforts over the two days were amazing and they were proud to finish equal third in the state in the opens division. With the team only losing one year 12 player next year, they should again go very close! The team consisted of Jordan, Edie, Megan, Hannah, Matilda, Indiana, Sabrina, Lily, Teagan, Sascha, Kiiahla, Zara and Olivia. (Zara and Olivia absent on finals day, not in team photo.)

A huge congratulations to Kahli of Year 9 who has made the final cut for the U16 Young Matlida’s team. She is going to Asia next Wednesday 5th September to represent Australia. Good Luck Kahli! We look forward to hearing how you go.

Sue Saunders, Sports Co-ordinator 2018 Gala Day Report The Year 7 Gala Day was held on Tuesday 14th August. This was an opportunity for the students to engage in some friendly competition against local schools where fair play and positive interaction was emphasised. I was lucky enough to visit each of the sports being Netball, Ultimate Frisbee, Soccer and Touch Football, and I was most impressed with the participation, sportsmanship and teamwork that was displayed by our students. As always, the Mackellar girls demonstrated their personal best regardless of their results. The Year 10 PASS students did an excellent job of coaching our teams as well as refereeing, scoring and managing. A big thank you to the teachers who helped on the day and made the event run smoothly. It was a great day out for everyone involved. Ms Angus PDHPE
