A Hollywood Love Story
A Hollywood Love Story
little theatre company proudly presents
Music & Lyrics by Jerry Herman Book by Michael Stewart
Revised by Francine Pascal. Original New York production directed and choreographed by Gower Champion
An Amateur production by arrangement with Samuel French Ltd.
If you have seen our previous three shows, you would have seen us
move from blood and gore (Sweeney Todd) to rock and roll (Buddy)
and finally to genuine taptastic comedy (Stepping Out). As a diverse
theatre company we strive to deliver something new, so this time
we are taking you back to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood during
the silent movie era. “Mack & Mabel” tells the true story of one of
Hollywood’s greatest Writer/Producers and Directors, Mack Sennett, and
his tumultuous relationship with one of his leading ladies - Mabel
Normand. Mack Sennett was responsible for the rise to stardom of some
of Hollywood’s greatest stars, including Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, The
Keystone Kops, Gloria Swanson, Bing Crosby and Charlie Chaplin.
A fairly new musical written in 1974 by Jerry Herman & Michael Stewart,
it was revived in the West End in 2006 starring David Soul, of “Starsky &
Hutch” fame, who played the title role of Mack Sennett. Other famous
people to play the roles of Mack & Mabel have been Dan Ackroyd and
Marissa Tomei in the Richard Attenborough biopic “Chaplin”.
You may not know this, but in the 1950 Billy Wilder film “Sunset
Boulevard” the name of the main protagonist, Norma Desmond, is believed
to have been inspired from the ill-fated stars Mabel Normand and actor/
director William Desmond Taylor: his murder in 1922 inspired the story.
In 1982, when British ice-skating team Torvill & Dean won the gold
medal for ice dance in the World Figure Skating Championships, they
performed to the overture from the original cast album. The event
was broadcast by BBC Television, and the station was inundated with
calls from viewers wanting to know where they could find the music.
Demand was so great that the album was re-released in the UK,
where it shot to No.6 on the charts, unprecedented for a show album,
especially one that was ten years old.
We hope you enjoy this performance as much as we have enjoyed
bringing it to life and we look forward to seeing you back here in the
main theatre in October for our production of “Little Shop of Horrors”.
Welcome once again to the Palace Theatre and to The
Little Theatre Company's production of "Mack & Mabel".

SynopsisLos Angeles 1929 – Mack Sennett returns to his once busy studio to pitch an idea for a movie, but while waiting, he reminisces about the golden age of the silent movies and his turbulent relationship with his one true love, Mabel Normand...After discovering Mabel when she is just a sandwich delivery girl, Mack transforms her into one of Hollywood’s biggest and brightest comedy movie stars. As Mack makes movie after movie with Mabel and Fatty Arbuckle, the cracks in their personal and working relationships start to show, and soon Mabel transfers her loyalties to William Desmond Taylor to further her career. But fame and fortune don’t come without a price, which both Mack and Mabel find out with devastating consequences.

COMPANY
Paul AllwrightHaving originally been tricked into joining the Little Theatre Company, Paul has since enjoyed many shows with them and considers himself very lucky indeed to have been hoodwinked.
Over the years he has appeared in the chorus as well as playing a number of principal roles, including Frank Shultz (Showboat), Jigger (Carousel), The Dentist (Little Shop of Horrors), The Pirate King (Pirates of Penzance), Sky Masterson (Guys and Dolls) and Mack Sennett in the company’s first production of “Mack and Mabel”. He has also competed successfully in both local and national singing competitions and has compered a number of shows helping to raise money for local charities.
Paul is very excited to be reprising his role as Mack Sennett and doubly so as he is again appearing opposite his wife Sharon. He was, however, intrigued to discover the show has since been revised and now includes a bedroom scene that he can’t for the life of him remember being there before!
If Paul was to have one regret it would be that his inquisitive six-year-old daughter appears to have picked up a few of the more colourful words from the script and is now heard using them with much enthusiasm around the house!
Sharon AllwrightHaving joined the Little Theatre Company back in 1989, Sharon
has since had the opportunity to perform some of the most sought after roles in musical theatre, including Ann (Half a Sixpence),
Peggy (42nd Street - Regional Premiere), Audrey (Little Shop Of Horrors - Regional Premier), Mabel (Mack And Mabel - 2000 South
Essex Premier), Polly (Crazy For You), Nancy (Oliver) and Milly (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers). Not to mention featuring as a Hotbox
Girl, a Copa Girl and a girl in pyjamas (Pajama Game).
Sharon is thrilled to be reprising her role as Mabel after previously performing the role 10 years ago. This show holds some special
memories for her and she is extremely happy to be playing alongside her husband once again.
scott rochefatty arbuckle
This is Scott’s 5th show with LTC and he is very pleased to finally be playing a role he hasn’t had to lose weight for! A stroke of luck, seeing as he has just come back from his honeymoon in Florida with his new wife Rachel.
Having been singing and performing since the age of 5, Scott has been very privileged to play some great roles. These include Tin-Man (Wizard of oz), Ugly (Honk), Curly (Oklahoma), Hero (Funny thing happened on the way to the Forum), Steve (Summer Holiday), Benny Southstreet (Guys & Dolls). Tosher (Fings aint what they used to be), Bill Tibbs (Wild Wild Women) and most recently Ritchie valens (Buddy) and Sweeney Todd (Sweeney Todd).
As a guest soloist he has also played the roles of Jean valjean (Les Miserables), Jesus and Judas (Jesus Christ Superstar) and The Phantom (Phantom of the Opera) in concert versions of the shows and, on a more classical note, he has sung in Handel’s Messiah and Stainer’s Crucifixion.
Scott is really looking forward to playing the comic clown, Fatty Arbuckle.
Lianne Larthelottie ames
Lianne has been performing with amateur dramatic groups for the past 10 years and this will be her 3rd show with the Little Theatre Company. Some previous performances include Mistress Squeamish (Lust), Tintinabula (A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum), Dot (Honk), Mimi (Guys and Dolls), Madame Lola (Wild Wild Women), Yvette (Allo Allo) and Mimsie (Summer Holiday).
Lianne has thoroughly enjoyed rehearsing with her fellow LTC members and she is really looking forward to the challenge of playing the part of Lottie – particularly the tap dancing!
darren harperfrank
Darren has been a member of the LTC since 1999 and originally joined whilst studying Performing Arts at SEEvIC College.” Mack & Mabel “marks his 20th show for the company, an achievement of which he is extremely proud. During this time, Darren has played many principal roles, with his favourites including Bill Snibson (Me & My Girl), Billy Crocker (Anything Goes), Tony Forte (Copacabana), Tobias (Sweeney Todd) and, most recently Joe, bass player of The Crickets, (Buddy).
This is Darren’s second run of “Mack & Mabel”, having played his first ever role, Fatty Arbuckle, in the LTC’s 2000 production of the show.
Dave LobleyWilliam Desmond Taylor
This show marks Dave’s 11th consecutive LTC performance. He is fortunate to have played some great roles including Nathan Detroit (Guys and Dolls) Sergeant of Police (Pirates of Penzance) Ricco Castelli (Copacabana) and, most recently, Buddy Holly’s record producer and manager, Norman Petty, in the LTC’s acclaimed version of “Buddy The Musical”.
Dave has also worked on the production teams as Director (Summer Holiday) and as Assistant Director (Oklahoma). In addition to the LTC productions, he is an active member of Southend Shakespeare Company for whom he will be appearing in “Henry v” this summer.
He is also looking forward to the LTC’s next show “Little Shop of Horrors” where he will be Assistant Director to Bradley Green. Dave is very pleased to be playing William Desmond Taylor and also to be part of the tremendously fun chorus team; he has the best of both worlds! Hollywood here we come!
Ian Bensonbauman
Ian is a recent convert to musical theatre, having “performed” in front of “audiences” in the classroom for seven years - and many more in the pub!. A leading light in the school “Teacher Revues”, Ian’s roles have included Captain Jack Sparrow, Declan Donnelly, The Wicked Witch of the West and The Joker!
He decided to transfer this passion to the theatre, joining the LTC in 2009. His first show was “Buddy”, in which he played the varied roles of Chief Hayrider, Murray Deutch and one half of the MC partnership at Clearlake.
Ian has found his first year in the LTC a challenging and rewarding experience and is very excited to be performing in his first principal role as Bauman in “Mack and Mabel”.
Paul Smithkessel
This will be Paul’s 10th show with the Little Theatre Company. During this time he has played a number of principal roles including: Josephine (Some Like it Hot), Julian Marsh (42nd Street), Adam Pontipee (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers), The Wiz (The Wiz), Zangler (Crazy for You) and Fred (Kiss Me Kate). He was also Chorus Master for LTC’s NODA Award winning productions of “42nd Street” and “Crazy for You”.
Paul graduated from Brighton University with an Honours Degree in Music/Performing Arts and since then his varied interests have included conducting and performing choral, operatic, orchestral and brass band music.
Maddie Coleella
Maddie Cole has been performing in concert venues and on the stage for many years. Her previous theatrical roles have included Beggar Woman (Sweeney Todd), Scaramouche (We Will Rock You) as well as Yum Yum (The Mikado), Hansel (Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel), the Apollo Performer (Buddy) and, most recently, Mavis Turner in the Little Theatre Company’s sell-out production of “Stepping Out”.
Maddie has performed in some of the country’s most prestigious venues as a member of touring show Red Hot Flashback. She is also an accomplished saxophonist and sings and plays in a wide variety of respected function bands, including local band Soul Desire, a tribute to the music of Pink Floyd - The Floyd Effect and her own solo cabaret show. In November 2009, Maddie was the proud winner of the Actz Factor talent competition.
She is delighted to be performing the role of Ella in this exciting new production of “Mack and Mabel”.
Mark Delfandy
Mark joined the company in 2004 for his first production playing the role of Hank (Calamity Jane). He later played Frank (7 Brides for 7 Brothers) and appeared in “42nd Street”, “Kiss me Kate”, “Sweeney Todd” and “Buddy”, making this his 7th production with the group.
Mark has always had a passion for the theatre starting from the plays he did at school. He has recently completed his degree in Drama at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. Whilst there he appeared in a variety of shows including Shakespeare’s “Pericles, Prince of Tyre” where he played the title role and Terry Pratchett’s “Going Postal” where he played “Moist von Lipwig”, a production which he also directed.

tim caterdirector
This is Tim’s third show as Director for the Little Theatre Company having previously directed “Guys & Dolls” (2006 - The New Empire Theatre) and “Oklahoma” (2008 - The Palace Theatre). Tim is an avid fan of true stories on the stage and therefore jumped at the chance to direct “Mack & Mabel” and bring to life the tragic story of some of Hollywood’s greatest film legends.
Tim’s theatre roles include : Horner (Lust - Rainbow 2000), The Cat (Honk - Rainbow 2000), Miles Gloriosus (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum - WODS & Rainbow 2000), Raoul (Eating Raoul - Rainbow 2000), Ephraim (7 Brides for 7 Brothers - The Little Theatre Company), Danny Zuko (Grease - Rainbow), valere (Tartuffe - Southend Shakespeare), Gangster No1 (Kiss Me Kate - The Little Theatre Company), Demetrius (A Midsummer Nights Dream - Southend Shakespeare) and most recently, to critical acclaim, the role of Buddy Holly (Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story - The Little Theatre Company).
bradley Greenassistant director
This is Bradley’s 6th show with the LTC taking principal roles, including Ali Hakim (Oklahoma!) and Beadle Bamford (Sweeney Todd). Most recently audiences thrilled to his portrayal/characterisation of The Big Bopper (Buddy).
Before he joined the LTC he performed many varied roles in a great number of shows, including Nicely Nicely (Guys and Dolls), Francis Fryer (Calamity Jane) and Rene (‘Allo ‘Allo). By day Bradley is a graphic designer which he puts to good use creating all the publicity material and programmes for our shows; he also created the images being projected throughout the show.
Bradley has really enjoyed working with Tim on such a challenging show and is very much looking forward to his directing debut with the next show. Here he will be putting another LTC actor through his paces in one of his favourite previous roles – that of Seymour (Little Shop of Horrors).

sharon gibbchoreographer
Sharon has been a member of the LTC for 6 years. Although usually found as one of our dancers in the chorus, Sharon enjoyed her first principal role for the club 2 years ago, playing Angie (Summer Holiday).
Having always been involved in dancing, she thought it would be great to take on a new challenge as joint Choreographer with Sarah.
With such a large cast, the chorus numbers have certainly been a challenge in themselves, but Sharon has found it an exciting experience due to the great team work and enthusiasm from everyone involved.
paul daymusical director
This is Paul’s 7th show with the LTC having joined for “Copacabana” as Chorus Master, and his 4th as Musical Director. Prior to the LTC, Paul spent a number of years onstage with Rainbow 2000 and has played roles such as Arvide Abernathy (Guys & Dolls), Percy Fortesque (Fings ain’t wot they used t’be), Asher (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), Sparkish (Lust) and Monsieur LeClerc (Allo Allo). Notable chorus parts have included a Munchkin (The Wizard of Oz) and a ‘conducting frog’ (The Frog Prince).
Paul has MD’d for many local operatic societies, including Rayleigh Operatic, Thundersley Operatic and Ingatestone Operatic and was Chorus Master with Rainbow2000 for many years.
He started his musical career at the age of 8 playing flute and guitar. He is currently Chairman of the Southend Philharmonic Orchestra where he plays flute (and percussion when “persuaded”) and also sings in local choral societies.
“Mack & Mabel” has one of Paul’s favourite Overtures from any show so he is very excited to be conducting live musicians instead of a CD!
sarah wilcoxchoreographer
Sarah’s love of dancing began when, at the age of four she performed on the Palace stage in the Pamela Freedman School of Dancing show - she was hooked! Her interest in theatre continued when, as a child, she enjoyed being in the LTC’s productions of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and “Carousel”, and in a youth production of “A Slice of Saturday Night”.
Having joined the LTC as an adult over 10 years ago, Sarah has taken part in many shows including the part of Odette - a Cagelle (La Cage Aux Folles). A short break from the LTC was taken whilst studying for a music degree in Brighton. In “Buddy” Sarah enjoyed a very different role - playing the violin in the live band on the stage.
Sarah has thoroughly enjoyed being part of the production team for “Mack and Mabel” and especially working with Sharon in their first choreographic role.
Stephanie kennaassistant musical director
Stephanie’s love of music has been nurtured from an early age through her parents’ involvement in a variety of music genres throughout East Anglia. Stephanie learnt to play piano and cornet at a young age and went on to study music alongside education at university.
During her life she has had the opportunity to play in some of the country’s most prestigious concert halls. Stephanie’s first experience as a musical director was while at university conducting the university wind orchestra; since then she has enjoyed conducting choirs and ensembles alike. “South Pacific” was her first musical at the age of 9, playing the part of Ngana, Emile’s daughter. She has enjoyed the opportunity of playing a number of roles since, her favourites being Yum Yum (The Mikado) and Jewel (The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas).
Stephanie has been a member of the LTC for three years performing on stage, but this is her first appearance as part of the production team - a step towards following in her father’s footsteps as an MD in musical theatre.
ian gilbertstage manager
Ian originally trained at Rose Bruford in Technical Theatre. After many years touring the UK and a spell in the West End he returned to his roots and took over the role of Stage Manager with the LTC. Now after amazing success Co-Directing and Stage Managing the acclaimed ‘Buddy’ he has returned to Stage Manage for the LTC one last time.
doreen goodfellowwardrobe
Doreen has been a member of the LTC for many years and in that time she has taken numerous leading roles, including Rose Marie (Rose Marie), Elizabeth (Robert and Elizabeth), Sarah (Bitter Sweet) and Eurydice (Orpheus in the Underworld), and has taken part in our successful Farndale plays and was seen recently on stage as Mrs. Fraser in the LTC’s sell-out production of “Stepping Out”.
She has directed various shows, including our award-winning “The King and I”, been Chorus Mistress for many shows and MD (Godspell and The Wiz). In recent years she has also turned her attention to costuming the LTC productions.
robert watsonLighting designer
Rob Watson, 25-year-old from Westcliff, had his interest in lighting ingrained from an early age through his father’s entertainments company.
A freelance lighting technician, he has now successfully worked for BBC and ITv including Totally Saturday, Beat the Star, Britain’s Got Talent, Colour of Money and just lately x Factor, The Whole 19 Yards & Proms in the Park.
However, being a local man he is still proud to work with the Cliffs Pavilion and Palace Theatre on many major touring events. To work with local theatre groups such as Little Theatre Club to enhance their production with the use of imaginative lighting gives great work satisfaction. Robert’s last production with LTC was the very successful and great Buddy The Musical in October 09 at the Palace theatre.
glenn oxenburysound designer
Glenn has always had a keen interest in Performing Arts, starting from performing on stage to playing in orchestras and bands as a keen drummer and pianist. He studied Multimedia Technology and Music Production at the University of Derby, from which he graduated in 2006, and then worked freelance as a Broadcast vision and Sound Engineer for a year.
He has worked for Southend Theatres for nearly 10 years, on and off, and is now Head of Sound. Over the last two years he has been designing and engineering the sound for locally produced musicals at both the Cliffs Pavilion and The Palace Theatre, including, “Toad of Toad Hall”, “HONK!” and “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, and the LTC productions of “Oklahoma!”, “Summer Holiday”, “Sweeney Todd” and “Buddy”. Outside of the theatre Glenn works closely with a local band, The Goldmaster Allstars, as their engineer and is also kept busy running the Goldmaster Recording Studios in Leigh. Glenn is looking forward to working with the LTC once again on this production of “Mack and Mabel”.

It has a membership of some 2500 amateur/community theatre groups and 3000 individual enthusiasts throughout the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of performing venues, ranging from the country’s leading professional theatres to village halls. Members have access to a wide range of benefits.
NODA is divided into eleven national Regions, each headed by an Region Councillor who sits on the Council (the ruling body of the Association), supported by a network of Regional Representatives and other volunteers. These volunteers are the vital link to the grass roots of the Association, the amateur theatre companies themselves. The Association is administered from its Headquarters in Peterborough, with a knowledgeable and friendly staff able to deal with virtually any enquiry relating to amateur theatre.
There is a broad spectrum of ages involved with amateur theatre nationwide, from a burgeoning number of youth groups to adult companies, which meet the needs of all levels of both performers, whether dramatic or musical, and enthusiasts involved backstage, front of house or in administration.
NODA aims: To give a shared voice to the amateur theatre sector • To help amateur societies and individuals achieve the highest standards of best practice and performance • To provide leadership and advice to enable the amateur theatre sector to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century
The link to the LTC...Lady Dorothy McAdden, who gives her name to the BUST unit, is the President of the Little Theatre Company. Dot, as she has always been affectionately known to us in LTC, was a member of the Company when the first production was staged back in 1949. Her husband was the LTC’s first President for many years and when he died Dot took on the role.
Over the last few shows we have tried to demonstrate our support to the BUST unit in a practical way by making a donation from the opening nights’ ticket sales: this has amounted to a total of over £2,500. As well as this, we have taken a collection as our audiences have left the theatre on these opening nights and we know that these have amounted to a generous sum. Once again, we will be making a donation to BUST from the first night of this show – Mack & Mabel – and taking a leaving collection.
Where it all started...The Lady McAdden Unit, affectionately known as BUST, has provided a major health function for women since the unit opened in 1976. The official opening followed a massive fund raising campaign which was spearheaded by the South East Essex ‘Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds’ to whom the charity remains affiliated, and supported by Lady Dorothy McAdden, wife of the late Sir Stephen McAdden, then MP for Southend East.
Why breast cancer screening is important...Screening aims to detect cancer in its infancy. Early detection of breast abnormalities could have a significant effect on treatment and beating the disease. In addition countless women have their fears allayed.
