Case CVX tractors are proving to be solid, reliable workhorses inNorth Queensland. Owners are embracing the new technologyavailable and using it in their operations to increase efficiency. Thenew CVX models - 120, 130, 150 and 170 - boast features such ascontinuously variable transmission (CVT), high power, and ease ofuse.

Steve and Marguerite Young andtheir two children Ryan and Samoperate a 200ha Cane farm atHomebush, south of Mackay.

As well as his own farm, Steve alsoowns a harvesting contract whichhe cuts around 50,000 tonne. “It’shard to tell you the exact size of ouroperations, as tonnage has been sovariable over the last few seasons”,Steve said.

Steve purchased a CVX170 fromMcDonald Murphy Machinery lastSeptember. “I found Keith Moylefrom McDonald Murphy veryhelpful and the fact that they haddemonstration tractors availableto operate made the decisionmaking process easy for me”.

Initially the CVX was fitted with anAusquip Cane bin and was putstraight into Cane Hauling. Theunit is used as a third unit whenSteve has long hauling runs and asa standby unit on his shorter runs.“ I p u r c h a s e d t h e t r a c t o rpredominantly as a farm tractorbut it fits into a harvestingoperation very well”.

“As a conventional style tractor, Iwas impressed with the ride, thefront axle and cab suspension workwell, they are a definite bonus! And 50km per hour is great for

hauling, but there is also plenty ofp o w e r a n d t o r q u e f o rimplements,” Steve said.

A maximum speed of 50km/hallows time saving on the road, combined with continuouslyvariable speed control, givingmaximum power, performanceand implement productivity infield. All models in the CVX lineup have engines with anelectronically controlled injectionpump, high maximum torque, and low fuel consumption. “I amvery pleased with its fuel economyespecially when you look at howmany litres it consumed per tonneof cane moved”, Steve stated.

The heart of the CVX is theA u t o m a t i c P r o d u c t i v i t yManagement (of APM) system, where the engine, transmission, remote valves, armrest operationand performance monitor areelectronically linked for totalcontrol of key tractor functions. The hydrostatic control unitvaries the speed and rotationaldirection of the planetary drive toachieve variable output speeds ata constant engine rpm. “Beingable to set the minimum powerrequirement for the application, means the tractors engine andtransmission speeds operate atmaximum efficiency”, Steve said.

“I was impressed with the way youcould use the transmission tocreep along and unload at thesidings, and the optional airsystem for trailer breakingperformed very well”.The spacious cab on the CVX isdesigned with operator comfort inmind. It has a telescopic and tilt-adjust steering wheel, an airsuspension seat that adjustshorizontally and vertically, and alow noise level of 72 db(A). TheM u l t i c o n t r o l l e r I I u n i tintergrated in the right arm restoperates all applications plustravelling speed. You can store aspeed in the cruise controlfunction or you can control thetravel l ing speed with theaccelerator pedal. “It is verysimple to operate and themachine has excellent lightingand great visibility night andday”.

“The machine also has goodserviceability, radiators andcoolers are easy to get to andthere’s not many grease pointseither. Overall, I am very happywith the machine”.

While relatively new to Australia, this concept has been used underthe Case IH marquee in Europefor several years, meaning thissystem is well tried and proven.

Producing in excess 150,000 tonnes of sugar caneannually requires a lot of effort. Doing it with only 4primary tractors may seem impossible but this iswhat Mio Farming have achieved at their farmingoperation in the Burdekin. When asked about thephilosophy behind the setting up of such a farmingsystem Mr Rick Mio commented “with largertractors we get larger Horse Power which allows usto use larger implements and cover more ground in

It is this reason that Mio Farming havechosen to partner with Case IH product andAgnorth Pty Ltd.

EXTEND YOURCOMPONENT’S LIFE

SIMPLE UNIT, BATTERY & ALTERNATOR CHECKSWelcome to the next in a series of articles onmaintenance and equipment care. This time we willdiscuss unit checks, alternators and batteries.

The machines, which only work in short cycles, aremost often neglected. The “only going to be half anhour” situation, so often happens and these are theunits which require the most attention.

The components don’t warm up completely to allowfull lubrication and operating clearances, socrankcase oil dilution and hydraulic oil condensationto name a few, become an issue.

Your owner’s handbook supplied with each machinegives you check lists and service intervals. These arerecommended and need to be reduced for conditionssuch as wet, very dusty and stop/start operations. These options are listed in the chart and localexperience is often helpful.

replacement unit, the cranking amps are important. If this is too low then short battery and starter life is acost. Why, you ask? The starter needs a good voltageand current to produce cranking power. If this is notavailable then overloading exists and therefore shortlifespan. The same with the battery. Like a pumpwith too small or blocked inlet, it cavitates and failsquickly.

Electronics also have a minimum operating voltage. If the battery cannot maintain power then themachine may crank but not start.

Alternators: An item to keep the belt tight and thelights on and charge the battery. Again systemvoltages are needed to run electronic equipment.“The transmission or hydraulics is playing up” can bea worn alternator belt not driving and causing lowbattery voltage. The electronics also use thealternator signals for various functions such asengine speed.

This leads us to the last point. Electronics use signals. If you change the type/brand of alternator on someunits you can create a domino effect of problems.20/90 for example on an ID plate means the ampsoutput at 2 different speeds. This is also matched tothe machine. If you run at reduced RPM for economyon a light job you may end up with low battery if thecorrect type is not used.

Alternator & BatteryJX90U ROPS

The daily checks are important, as this is the time tolook at that oil leak or piece of debris stuck in the tyre, make sure fluids levels are correct and that warningsystem lights, gauges and controls are working. Anyweapage from a seal can be minor or an indication of ahidden issue such as bearing failure or simplycleaning the breather filter, or that blown light bulbcould cost an engine failure.

A little grease more often is sometimes moreproductive then a once a week event. Perhapslubrication systems are an option but these too stillrequire a check to see if all points are working. If thelube point is blocked or plug stripped, this is not goingto be serviced, so an expensive repair is imminent.

Modern electronic machines require good electricalconnections and voltage to operate. This begins atthe battery. Design restrictions have made thesesmaller and more powerful. So, when you select your

During the 2001 season in Australia, a contractor’s harvester fitted with aprototype ‘Anti-Vortex Fan’ cut in excess of 60,000 tonnes. At the end of theseason, this harvester had 15% less EM than the mill average, and on many dayshad less than half the mill’s EM average. In addition, the farmers who had theircane harvested by this machine were so impressed with the reduction in caneloss through the primary extractor, they commented that they “will not let aharvester cut their cane unless they have this new ‘Anti-Vortex Fan’.

The new design Anti-Vortex Fan allows a more even distribution of airflowthrough the cleaning chamber. This improves cleaning while simultaneouslyreducing cane loss.

This new design allows the fan to operate at a lower speed, thus increasing the lifeof the blades and wear ring, and also reducing the (hp) requirement. The plasticnose cone also reduces the wear on the fan hub.
