MANOR DRIVE METHODIST CHURCH Manor Drive Methodist Church, planned in 1930 for Torrington Park and temporarily established on the corner with Friern Barnet Lane by 1935, opened on the corner of Manor Drive and York Way in 1938. An imposing red-brick building in a modern style, it consists of a nave with shallow aisles, transepts, a low lantern tower, a polygonal chancel with adjoining vestries, and a narthex connecting the nave to a single-storied hall added in 1956. It has seating for c. 300. (Victoria County History page 33) Although there were only short-lived non-conformist congregations in the area before the 1880s, Methodists did have a small chapel in Colney Hatch Lane from 1836, and as the congregation grew, it moved on to various neighbouring locations, using existing buildings. In 1904, Pembroke Road Methodist Church was built by the Muswell Hill congregation as a Wesleyan mission hall and then, in 1930 the original Colney Hatch Lane congregation, which had since moved premises to Torrington Park and beyond, planned to return there and build Torrington Park Methodist Church. However, by 1935, this project had evolved to become temporary premises on the corner of Friern Barnet Lane before, in 1938, arriving at the corner of Manor Drive and York Way as a permanent building. Thus, the main church here was built in 1937/38, a large building in the simpler style of the time and is orientated so that the worship area faces west, not east as in most other churches. It is of cruciform design with shallow transepts, an apsidal sanctuary and narrow aisles which are more like ambulatories. There are north-west and south-west vestries nestling in the external corners and the large, and internally imposing, lantern tower crossing has a shallow domed ceiling which is also reflected by the shape of the adjacent sanctuary ceiling. The narthex leads to a main hall and facilities further east on the site, these being added in 1956, and the Caretaker’s flat was a further north-side addition in 1978. The church was built in a soft red brick and the subsequent additions have generally respected this, although the facilities to the north of the main hall are in an LBC wirecut brick – out of sight! The church roofs, together with the narthex roof, use a glazed interlocking ‘Boldroll’ tile while the flat roofs of the vestries are in asphalt and the shallow roofs of the newer main hall areas are in felt. The windows are all in modern upvc (unknown source) 15 Jan 1935. Application approved for Methodist Church (Friern Barnet UDC Minutes) Feb 1937 - Nov 1949. (Primitive Methodist Church). Planning application for extension to church. Files include application for a temporary hut to be used as a youth centre. (Submitted by Cooper & Turner, Amberley House, Strand, architects) London Metropolitan Archives LMA/4070/02/03393) Apr 7 1938. Manor Drive Methodist Church designed by R C White-Cooper and Sydney R Turner. The first section of a scheme which, when completed, will consist of a church seating 450 persons; a hall seating 250, fitted for lectures and cinema; classrooms; church room; service and cloakrooms. MAYFIELD AVENUE, N12 Planning applications up to Feb 2014

History There were a few houses between the roads by 1897 but the whole area was built over between the world wars. It contained the Friern Watch estate of Newcome Estates, which consisted of the avenues between High Road, Finchley Park, and Friary and Torrington roads. (Victoria County History) You all know Friern Watch Avenue and some of you may know that it was built on the estate of the former Friern Watch House, as were Mayfield Avenue and Ravensdale Avenue. A year or two ago, Janet and Colin were looking out for Friern Barnet western boundary markers when they came across an enigmatic marker in a side alley off Lynton Avenue (parallel to Mayfield Avenue). I went back there last week to take a photo myself. The marker is a rectangle, rust-red coloured but in perfect condition, and bearing the legend, “Friern Watch Boundary. As agreed Nov 18 1906”. John Heathfield pointed out that the boundary on the 1896 map is marked und (undefined), which might explain why the boundary had to be “as agreed” at that point, when the houses came to be built (John Donovan 20 Mar 2003) Infrastructure 14 Sep 1930. The Council is not prepared to make up the road (Friern Barnet UDC Minutes) 9 Feb 1934. MOSS HALL TAVERN, BALLARDS LANE As with many pubs, the name of the Moss Hall tavern has at least two derivations attributed to it, one of them rather mythical and the other, less Interesting, based on fact. Local tradition says that the owner of the Moss Hall estate in the early 19th century, Thomas Harrison Andrew, was very angry at the disturbance he suffered through having soldiers encamped on Finchley Common, in front of his big house. They made such a great noise that he packed moss behind the panelling of his rooms to deaden the sound! Hence the name. More reliable, however, the house was called Moss Hall as early as 1696, and was associated with with the Mosse family, whose origins go back at least to the 15th century. The original tavern was built over 100 years ago on part of the Moss Hall estate. After Andrew died in 1824, his personal effects were put up for sale, and John Boyce, who had been his coachman, bought the oak panelling out of respect for his old master. Boyce was then the landlord of the “Old King of Prussia” and had the panelling built into the passage of his inn. Licensees which followed included John Clevely in the 1870s followed by W H Allmott, Clevely died in or before 1900, after which a Mr and Mrs Graves held the house. According to the local historian, the late C O Banks, Mrs Graves was still “stout and alive” in East Finchley in 1953. The next owner was a Mr Christie, but he died suddenly, and his plans for building up the trade of the house were sadly frustrated. The original pub was demolished in 1926, when Levy and Franks obtained the premises. More recently the pub has undergone a complete face-lift under the hands of Bass Charrington brewers. Mr Dennis Byfield has been licensee for about five years (Newspaper cutting undated, in Barnet Local Studies and Archives L15868/180)

MYDDELTON PARK, N20 Planning applications up Jun 2020

Layout There are 59 residential properties, 32 on south side and 26 on the north side. 34 houses are detached (of which 9 are bungalows) and 25 are semi-detached History Myddelton Park, a short cul-de-sac from Oakleigh Road opposite the entrance to Oakleigh Park South, was built by John Miles before 1882 when he erected All Saints’ church and vicarage near by. In 1903 the whole of his estate between Friern Barnet Lane and Oakleigh Road was acquired by the National Land Corporation which planned freehold houses for prosperous commuters and extended Myddelton Park to Friern Barnet Lane along an existing path, Loring and Pollard Roads, and Queens Avenue. Initially 86 plots, fronting Oakleigh Road and in the part of Myddelton Park where there was a roadway, were offered for sale. Successive sales followed, including those of 58 plots in 1905, when Loring and Pollard roads were still projected, but there were only c. 50 houses by 1920: the frontage to Friern Barnet Lane was built up but not that to Oakleigh Road, and houses formed isolated groups elsewhere in the estate. (Victoria County History page 13) The southern and western parts of the Bethune estate were built as planned, although considerable space was left along the Crescent. Most of the northern part was acquired by the council for allotments and a recreation ground, cutting off Holly Park from the Church Farm estate, which on the completion of Myddelton Park, was laid out to the south by Church Farm Estates Ltd between Friern Barnet Lane and Oakleigh Road North. (Victoria County History page 14) Friern Barnet Lane and Oakleigh Road were linked only after 1903 by Myddelton Park. (Victoria County History page 7) 29 Apr 2011.
