CELEBRATE FLAG DAY IN MACARTHUR PARK June 14th marks the 238th birthday of the U.S. Flag. In 1777 the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes pattern for the national flag, almost one year after the Declaration of Independ- ence was signed. Although the Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America’s birthday, starting in the 1880s many school and citizen groups advo- cated the adoption of a national day to commemorate the U.S. flag. Inspired by more than thirty years of state and local celebrations, President Woodrow Wilson officially established Flag Day in 1916. It was not until 1949, however, that President Harry Truman designat- ing June 14th as National Flag Day. On Saturday, June 13, the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History will present a family-oriented celebration of Flag Day in MacArthur Park. The event includes a free concert of patriotic music by the Little Rock Wind Symphony, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Veterans of all wars and branches will be honored during the concert. Families are encouraged to bring picnic dinners to the park and enjoy this great event. Southern Salt Food Company will have food available for purchase. Free miniature American flags will be provided by Woodmen of the World. In the event of rain, the concert will be held on Sunday, June 14. The MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History preserves the contribu- tions of Arkansans who served our nation both in peacetime and in war.
