Dear Mountaineer Fans,

On behalf of our student-athletes, coaches and staff, I want to sincerely thank you for your support of the Mountaineers. This is an exciting time for West Virginia University and our 17 intercollegiate athletic teams. Our student-athletes work hard, think big and make a difference in the classroom and on the field of play. The success achieved by our teams has been no accident, and we all should be proud of their performance and the exemplary way they represent the University and state. Just as our teams grow and adapt to remain competitive, so must our entire athletic program. Embracing positive change designed to improve performance is a vital part of the sports we play and love. That’s why we are enthusiastic to unveil our new Priority Points Program. The Priority Points Program will reward the longevity and generosity of thousands of Mountaineer Athletic Club (MAC) members and season ticket holders as well as modernize and improve our fundraising efforts.

We have spent countless hours developing and fine-tuning the Priority Points Program, relying on research and feedback from more than 75 major institutions that currently use a similar program. We have also taken into account the goals and aspirations of all Mountaineer fans, donors and season ticket holders. The result is a system that allows us better serve you and your future needs. Additionally, this new program puts WVU’s varsity teams in a stronger position to take on the many challenges—financial and otherwise—that come with competing at the highest level of intercollegiate sports. The Priority Points Program will improve the overall fairness and equity in the allocation of benefits and will reward donors who have supported the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consistently over significant periods of time. It will expand the ways in which we currently allocate benefits by taking into account such things as years of giving, season ticket purchases and gifts to the University. The Priority Points Program also will aid new and current donors in obtaining seats commensurate with their annual gifts and overall contributions to WVU, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and directly to the MAC. I understand that the Priority Points Program represents a major change for the legions of passionate WVU supporters like you. But after careful, thorough and thoughtful effort, we believe we have crafted a system that will be ideal for Mountaineer fans. It will become a key component in our long-term planning and strategy and allow us to move forward confidently with our goal to achieve excellence on and off the field. Our athletic programs have enjoyed extraordinary

success over the last several years. This success has led to

unprecedented visibility and positive exposure for West

Virginia University. From our football team’s success on

the gridiron to our basketball team’s accomplishments

on the hardwood, many loyal alumni and friends take

pride in calling themselves Mountaineers. WVU fans can

be heard singing “Country Roads” around the world, and

the phrase “Let’s Go …” is answered enthusiastically with

“Mountaineers!”

As a result, more fans than ever are purchasing season

tickets to WVU football and basketball, and the

Mountaineer Athletic Club (MAC) has grown to more than

5,500 members. While the potential of our teams is unlimited,

unfortunately, the number of tickets and parking spaces is

not. This growth has made it necessary for us to develop an

improved method to distribute and allocate tickets, parking

and other MAC benefits.

From the beginning, we have always attempted to be fair

to all of our donor/season ticket holders in allocating tickets

and other benefits. In the past, the allocation ticket, parking

and other priority benefits, were only based on annual

giving levels. With the new program, we are improving

the allocation of benefits by recognizing multiple levels of

support to the intercollegiate athletics program and the

University.

The Priority Points Program is designed to reward longevity

and generosity of support to West Virginia University, its

Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the MAC. It will

be used to determine seating at away games, bowl games,

postseason tournaments, new season ticket requests,

requests for seat upgrades, additional ticket requests and

parking.

THE PRIORITY POINTS PROGRAM WAS DEVELOPED FOR THREE REASONS:

1. To improve overall fairness and equity in the allocation of

MAC benefits, including tickets and parking.

2. To recognize those who have purchased season tickets

and given consistently over significant periods of time,

increased their annual gifts, made capital project or

endowment gifts, supported the University, etc.

3. To help new donors obtain seats commensurate with their

annual gifts and overall contributions to the Mountaineer

Athletic Club.

Why We Need

Your HelpFINANCIAL REALITIES

The WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics must gener-

ate sufficient revenue to maintain its status as a self-support-

ing budgetary unit.

MAINTAINING REVENUES TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE

Season ticket revenues in football and men’s basketball

are not enough to support adequately the overall athletic

program. Private support from loyal and dedicated MAC

members is critical to the long-term success of WVU’s inter-

collegiate athletics programs.

RISING COSTS OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT

More than 350 student-athletes in 17 varsity sports require

an annual scholarship budget of more than $8 million paid

to WVU. Most scholarship support is raised annually through

private donations.

ATHLETICS IS OFTEN SEEN AS THE “FRONT PORCH” TO THE UNIVERSITY

Athletic success is important to West Virginia University. Finan-

cial stability in athletics ultimately creates success, and this

success results in pride among our many alumni and friends.

Athletic success is a tremendous recruiting tool for the

general student population, potential student-athletes and

world-class faculty and staff.

The Priority Points Program was created to provide a consis-

tent, fair and equitable way to distribute and allocate donor

benefits and other limited resources. Each category in the

Priority Points Program is assigned a specific point value. The

point values from each category will be combined to create

your point total. Each donor then will be assigned a rank

based on their point total within their annual giving level, in

relation to all current MAC members. You may also actively

increase your points throughout the giving year.

• Planned gifts to Intercollegiate Athletics

• Being a current or retired WVU faculty/staff member

• Gifts made to the WVU Foundation in support of West Virginia University (outside of gifts made to Intercollegiate Athletics)

CURRENT GIVING

Two (2) points will be awarded for every $100 of giving to any area of the MAC in the current giving year (December 1-November 30). Please note that points are awarded only when gifts are received. Current giving includes annual fund gifts, major gifts, endowments, sport-specific giving, and other programs. Faculty/staff will continue to be recognized in the appropriate MAC giving level based on their annual gift, which includes a soft credit. However, points will only be awarded for the actual gift(s) received. Points for matching gifts will be awarded once the matching gift is received.

CONSECUTIVE YEARS OF GIVING

Five (5) points will be awarded for each year of consecutive giving to the MAC since 1976. A minimum gift of $100 each year is neces-sary to qualify. If a year of giving is skipped, your consecutive years of giving drop back to one (1) when you rejoin. New donors will re-ceive points in the second year of membership. Points are awarded for consecutive years of giving to encourage MAC members to donate every year.

LIFETIME GIVING

One (1) point will be awarded for each $100 of lifetime giving to MAC since 1976. Lifetime giving includes gifts made prior to the current giving year and includes gifts to the annual fund, major gifts, endowments, sport-specific giving and other programs.

CONSECUTIVE YEARS OF PURCHASING SEASON TICKETS

WVU ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Beginning in 2012, MAC members who have an individual or joint membership in the WVU Alumni Association receive one (1) point per year for each year of continued, dues-paying membership. All lifetime members will be awarded fifteen (15) points (one-time). Alumni Association membership will be verified through the WVU Foundation.

Understanding Your Priority Points

WVU VARSITY CLUB

One (1) point is awarded to all former student-athletes, managers, coaches, support personnel, cheerleaders and mascots for each year of dues paying membership. Twenty-five (25) points will be awarded for a lifetime membership (one-time). A current Varsity Club membership activates your points.

JERRY WEST SOCIETY

Jerry West Society members receive fifteen (15) points (one-time) for a planned gift that names the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics as the beneficiary. Contact the MAC to discuss and docu-ment your planned gift to determine your available points.

FACULTY/STAFF OF WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

Current MAC members (and/or their spouse/partner) who are faculty or staff of West Virginia University and its affiliates will also re-ceive a one-time 10-point award. Faculty/staff status will be verified through the WVU Foundation. A maximum of twenty (20) points will be awarded per account.

Employees are recognized as faculty or staff from the following or-ganizations: West Virginia University, West Virginia University Hospitals Inc., WVU Foundation, West Virginia University Institute of Technology and Potomac State College.

GIFTS MADE TO THE WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION

One (1) point will be awarded for every $1,000 in historical giving to the WVU Foundation in support the mission of West Virginia Universi-ty, not including gifts to WVU Intercollegiate Athletics and the Moun-taineer Athletic Club, since 1976. Points are awarded only when gifts are received and processed through the WVU Foundation.

RETAINING PRIORITY POINTSIn the event that you discontinue your donations to the MAC and/or season ticket purchases, you will retain your priority points with the exception of points allotted for consecutive years of giving and/or consecutive years of season ticket purchases.

MAC BENEFITSTo receive MAC benefits, all season ticket holders, Alumni Associa-tion members and donors who have only given gifts to the WVU Foundation must support the MAC with an annual gift. Please refer to the benefits chart on page 12.

GIFTS-IN-KINDIn-kind gifts of property, goods, or services can be of great financial assistance to the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Gifts-in-kind are accepted on a limited basis, must be pre-approved by the Direc-tor of Athletics and submitted to the WVU Foundation for gift recogni-tion. Gifts-in-kind are awarded two (2) points for every $100 worth of goods and/or services donated in the current giving year. Gifts-in-kind made prior to the current giving year will be awarded one (1) point for every $100 worth of goods and/or services provided.

Explanation &Examples

TICKET ALLOCATION PROCESS

Your MAC annual giving level will determine the number of tickets you are able to request, while your total priority points within your annual giving level will determine your ticket location. To allocate tickets and other benefits, donors will be ranked based on their total points, from highest to lowest, within his or her respective annual giving level.

Tickets will be then assigned to donors with the highest point total beginning with the Stadium Suite holders and Mountaineer Scholar level and working down through the Buckskin donor level (based on availability). Available tickets will then be allocated after all Buckskin level donors have been assigned. In limited inventory situations, large orders may be split, with a limited number of tickets allocated in priority locations and all other tickets allocated in other available locations.

Priority Points and priority point rankings are subject to change daily. A calendar designating various benefit and allocation deadlines will be distributed to all MAC members and season ticket holders on a per-event basis.

PRIORITY SEATING AND SEASON TICKETS

Acquiring new season tickets, adding additional season tickets and/or upgrading existing season tickets will be evaluated using Priority Points Program guidelines through a combined effort of the MAC and the Mountaineer Ticket Office.

Since season ticket renewal rates in the priority seating areas are typically high, acquiring new or additional seats, as well as upgrading seats, can be a challenge. Once the regular season ticket renewal deadline has passed, all non-renewed season tickets are placed in inventory and made available for distribution and allocation. You must make your additional ticket and/or upgrade request in writing—either by writing the specifics on your season ticket application or by sending a letter to the Mountaineer Ticket Office. New season ticket holders will be allocated available seats after the renewal deadline has passed.

Please note that all requests are filled based on availability. While your gift increases your opportunity to acquire or upgrade season tickets, it is not an implicit guarantee. As seating becomes available, making a gift, or increasing your gifts to the MAC and the University is the best way to acquire new season tickets, upgrade existing season tickets and obtain additional season tickets.

POSTSEASON, SINGLE, AWAY, NEUTRAL SITE TICKETS

The opportunity to purchase postseason, single game, away game and neutral site game tickets also will be determined by the Priority Points Program. WVU is committed to providing every opportunity pos-sible for MAC members and season ticket holders to attend postseason and away games, obtain additional single home game tickets and tickets to neutral site games. At times, however, only a limited number of tickets are available, and the Priority Points Program and MAC annu-al giving levels will determine how tickets are distributed and allocated.

Example #1MAC Donor #1 has purchased football tickets and men’s basketball sea-son tickets consecutively for 13 years. She has also purchased women’s basketball season tickets for the past five years. She has been a MAC member for 30 consecutive years and her lifetime giving totals $526,000. WHY IS THE PRIORITY POINTS PROGRAM IMPORTANT?

WHAT IS MY PRIORITY POINTS RANKING, AND HOW IS IT IN RELATION TO OTHERS? HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY RANKING?

Your rank is based on the total number of priority points within your respective MAC annual giving level, compared to all other MAC members in the same giving level. The best way to improve your ranking is to increase your contributions to MAC, continue giving on an annual basis and continue to purchase season tickets. You can also increase your points and rank by becoming a member of the Alumni Association, designating the MAC as the beneficiary in your estate plans and supporting other areas of the University in addition to Intercollegiate

Athletics.

WHY DO I ONLY GET POINTS FOR CONSECUTIVE YEARS OF PURCHASING TICKETS SINCE 1985?

The Mountaineer Ticket Office updated its ticket software program in 1985. Records kept prior to this date were in many formats, unreliable and unable to be imported into the new system. This starting date allows us to use accurate data to determine priority points.

HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY SEATING LOCATION(S) AT VARIOUS EVENTS, INCLUDING AWAY FOOTBALL GAMES, BOWL GAMES ETC.?

The best way to improve your seating location(s) at any WVU athletic event is to improve your respective rank by increasing your priority points within your annual giving level. Moving to a higher MAC annual giving level will also help you improve your

seating location.

HOW CAN I INCREASE THE NUMBER OF TICKETS I CAN ORDER TO VARIOUS EVENTS?

The best way to increase the number of tickets you can order for various events is to increase your MAC annual giving level. All tickets are based on availability. Please refer to the MAC’s benefit chart on page 12 to view all giving levels.

IF I DESIGNATE A $200 GIFT TO AN OLYMPIC SPORT, WILL I BE ABLE TO PURCHASE FOOTBALL AND/OR MEN’S BASKETBALL SEASON TICKETS IN THE PRIORITY SEATING AREAS?

To purchase season tickets in the priority seating areas for football and men’s basketball, you would need to make the appropriate per-seat minimum gift required for football season tickets and/or the appropriate annual gift for basketball season tickets. Your Olympic sport gift will count toward your priority points and will help determine your appropriate seat locations, but will not substitute for the required gift(s) in football and

men’s basketball.

I HAVE PURCHASED SEASON TICKETS FROM ANOTHER SEASON TICKET HOLDER AND HAVE PAID HIM/HER THE ANNUAL PER-SEAT GIFT AND/OR MADE OTHER GIFTS THROUGH THEIR ACCOUNT. DO I RECEIVE PRIORITY POINTS?

The account holder who purchases the season tickets from the Mountaineer Ticket Office receives all Priority Points for the years of tickets purchased and all Priority Points for all respective MAC gifts. The MAC strongly encourages each donor and/or season

ticket holder to maintain his or her own account.

WHERE DO I FIND MY PRIORITY POINT TOTAL?

Current MAC donors and season ticket holders will receive an initial Priority Points statement in the next few weeks. More information will be sent at a later date.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT MY SEASON TICKET LOCATIONS IN 2012-13?

2012-13 season ticket and parking locations will be unaffected provided donors maintain their MAC giving at the same donor level classification (or higher). Seat locations and parking assignments are also contingent upon meeting all Mountaineer Athletic Club and Mountaineer Ticket Office policies, guidelines

and deadlines.

Account

A current MAC member is defined as an individual who has

an account in his/her name and has made a gift during the

giving year. The MAC giving year begins December 1 and

ends November 30 of the following year.

If a donor has made gifts to his/her account, but has not

made an annual fund gift in the current giving year, he/she

is not considered a current MAC member and will not have

priority for ordering tickets, parking or receive other MAC

benefits. Season ticket holders and individuals who are not

current MAC members will be allocated available tickets

after all current MAC members, based on their total points..

All past donors and season ticket holders who are not

current MAC members are encouraged to give an annual

fund gift to maximize their Priority Points and receive various

MAC benefits and ticket applications.

Payments may be made in-full during the current fund

drive or throughout the giving year. Please keep in mind

the donation deadlines required for priority seating and

parking. All gifts are processed and receipted by the WVU

Foundation.

ACCOUNT INFORMATION

Beginning in 2012, all season ticket holders and MAC

member accounts may contain only the following: a) one

contact name; or b) one contact name and spouse/partner.

Multiple names on one account are no longer permitted.

If the account is under a business name, the business must

designate a contact person.

EACH DONOR ACCOUNT MUST BE LISTED AS FOLLOWS:

Business name with contact name (e.g., Mountaineer Inc. - Joe Mountaineer)

Personal account name (e.g., Joe Mountaineer)

Account holder and spouse/partner (e.g., Joe and Jane Mountaineer)

TRANSFERRING PRIORITY POINTS, GIFT HISTORY AND SEASON TICKET PURCHASE HISTORY

Priority points, gift history and/or season ticket purchase his-

tory may not be transferred from one person to another or

one account to another. Also, the transfer of points or season

tickets by virtue of a will, trust or other estate-planning docu-

ment is not allowed. In the event of the death of an account

holder or season ticket holder, the surviving spouse/partner

retains the priority points and season ticket priority, provided

the spouse/partner was on the account prior to the time

of death. Please contact the MAC if you wish to remove a

name from your account, in case of divorce, or death of a

parent/surviving spouse.

PRIOR AGREEMENTS AND POLICIES

The Priority Points Program will supersede all previously

communicated ticket and benefit allocation policies

including, but not limited to any grandfather clauses, verbal

agreements and previous MAC or Mountaineer Ticket Office

seating policies.

· Priority deadline for all season ticket renewals.· Priority deadline for all 2012 MAC annual fund/season ticket priority gifts.

JULY 2012· Point Verification process ends and updated priority points statement sent.· Priority Point totals available online through your account at WVUGame.com· Allocation and distribution dates and deadlines sent to all donors and season ticket holders.

Priority Points will be ranked based on gifts received for the purpose of allocating football bowl tickets, Big 12 basketball tournament tickets and NCAA tournament tickets.

Matching Gifts Your employer may sponsor a matching gift program that will

match, double, or – in some instances – more than double your

gift to the Mountaineer Athletic Club. Some companies also

match gifts made by volunteers, spouses, retirees, or board

Engine found at WVUF.org, contact the WVU Foundation at

Securities Donors may make a charitable contribution through an elec-

tronic transfer of stock or the actual stock certificate. Donors

receive a tax deduction on a gift of stock based on the value

of the stock on the day it was received by the Mountaineer

Athletic Club. Please contact the WVU Foundation at (304)

284-4000 to transfer stock or securities.

Bequests Gifts through wills and bequests can provide you with the

opportunity to sustain your family name in conjunction with

West Virginia University’s intercollegiate athletic program. The

Mountaineer Athletic Club can provide you with the language

The Mountaineer Athletic Club (MAC) is the fundraising arm of West Virginia University’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and operates in partnership with the WVU Foundation. The WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics pays 100% of the schol-arships awarded to more than 350 student-athletes in 17 varsity sports from monies raised by the MAC.

The MAC also support capital projects required to build and maintain first-class athletic facilities. In addition, monies raised by the MAC are used to support a variety of programs that enhance the overall experience of WVU student-athletes. Your individual and corporate contributions help Advance Scholar-ship and Build Champions.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP Supporting more than 350 student-athletes in 17 varsity sports each year creates a significant need for private support. WVU Intercollegiate Athletics pays 100% of the scholarship bill from the University for its student-athletes, primarily with monies received from MAC members who understand the need and costs of maintaining a premier college athletic program. MAC fundraising efforts also support critical capital projects and other special programs undertaken by the Department of Inter-collegiate Athletics.

Mountaineer sports are the window through which the University often is viewed, with its accomplishments serving as a tremen-dous recruiting tool and a catalyst for philanthropy to all areas of WVU. Essential private support enables WVU to recruit and train elite student-athletes in quality facilities, provide scholar-ships and compete with peer institutions. This financial stabil-ity—created primarily by MAC members—ultimately breeds success and success breeds pride among WVU’s many alumni and friends.

NEED FOR GROWTH The cost of competing at the highest level and providing a quality education for outstanding student-athletes continues to climb. The primary resource responsible for meeting these critical needs are funds generated by the Mountaineer Athletic Club. Consequently, the loyal support of MAC members has never been more paramount to the success of every WVU student-athlete and team.

To address ongoing and future demands, MAC has targeted growth in its membership to maintain WVU’s position as one of the nation’s premier programs. Sustaining our success — ath-letically and academically — requires that more fans, orga-nizations and businesses get involved in the important mission headed by MAC. Now is the time to get involved and secure the future of WVU Intercollegiate Athletics.

Membership in MAC is available through annual gifts to the student-athlete scholarship fund. Membership runs December 1 through November 30 and can begin with a gift of as little as $100 annually. New members can contribute at any level, but must make a minimum annual fund/season ticket priority gift of $100 to become a current member and receive MAC benefits. Renewing and new members traditionally have until the second Friday in May to complete their full giving levels, while enjoying the benefits of membership throughout the year.

As a member of the Mountaineer Athletic Club you provide a vital component to the success of Mountaineer athletics. Your membership provides WVU student-athletes the opportunity to proudly say, “I’m a Mountaineer.”
