Welcome to Music at the MACSince long before the groundbreaking for the McAninch Arts Center, student and community musicians have explored the musical arts, honed their skills and entertained audiences at College of DuPage. From buildings M and K on west campus to off-campus sites to the McAninch Arts Center and now at the newly renovated MAC, the sounds of learning, making and listening to music have filled our classrooms and our stages.

Students and community members from throughout the district converge on the MAC every week for the joy of making music. Our singers and players range from their teens to their 80s, from those seeking degrees to those who have already earned them, to those who make music purely for the love of it.

We hope you enjoy the broad range of music we make with collaborations of eager musicians and experienced faculty in music from classical, jazz and unclassifiable styles. All of our ensembles welcome new members at the start of every semester and all of our ensembles perform at least once a semester.

Sit back and let the music wash over you. Visit the Cleve Carney Art Gallery while you’re here. Drop in on our free Music Fridays @ Noon. Stay connected to us by joining us on Facebook (AtTheMAC) or by joining our e-newsletter for news about all the events at the MAC (www.AtTheMAC.org). And think about coming back to join one of our ensembles or take private lessons or music courses.

We’re grateful to have you in our audience—and grateful for all the advantages of making music at College of DuPage.

Enjoy the music—we make it for you.

Founded in 1969, the DuPage Community Concert Band started as a daytime concert band for students and a nighttime band for the community. In 1982 the band was consolidated into one community group. The size of the group has grown ever since. The 2015–16 school year marks the 46th anniversary of the band.

The band plays two concerts per semester in the McAninch Arts Center’s Belushi Performance Hall. Membership is open to all high school graduates with woodwind, brass or percussion experience who are otherwise qualified to register. Auditions are required for chair placement, but no one is refused membership. Membership is open each semester in all sections. Call (630) 942-2048 for registration information.

Through music education, and the performance of our music literature, we desire to help facilitate the enjoyment of playing in a band program for all who wish to do so. The exposure to the beauty and expression of music, and the involvement in the activities that are congruent to a person’s involvement in the fine arts, will forever enhance that person’s life.

The DuPage Community Concert Band program exists to embrace and express all of the beauty and glory we can share with each other through playing great music. We try to program concerts that are entertaining to the audiences, stimulating to the performer, and consistent with the representation and growth of the college and community band medium. The support of the membership, and their desire to perform great music, are the reasons that the DuPage Community Concert Band continues today.

It is our goal that you enjoy the music we will be presenting in our concert. We hope you will like what you hear as much as we delight in performing it for you.

Terry Redford studied music at DePaul University, finishing his Bachelor of Arts in Music degree at Elmhurst College. He later received his Master of Music Education from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago.

When Redford was 19, he was appointed as the director of the Catholic Youth Organization Youth Band. Later he founded the Driscoll Catholic High School and Grade School band programs. Redford moved to public school music education and became the director of bands at Wheaton Central High School. He became director of bands at Lemont High School in 1989.

Redford has performed as a professional trombonist with the CYO Bands, VanderCook College Band, DePaul University Band, Elmhurst College Band, Elmhurst Symphony, DuPage Symphony, West Suburban Symphony, Brass Tracks Jazz Orchestra, and Peter Ellman Jazz Band, and he does many other professional performances throughout the Chicago area.

In 1980, Redford founded the Catholic Concert Band Competition known as State of the Art and has been the co-host for the Midwest Music Festival since 1991.

Redford is an adjudicator and clinician throughout the Midwest. He has been the guest conductor for the SWIC and SICCA conference festivals and has presented seminars on computer music technology for the SSC conference.

In 2007, he became the fourth director of the College of DuPage Community Band. He enjoys being the conductor of a program that exemplifies the process of continuing music in the lives of those who enjoy it.

Klingende GeographieThis work was assembled in 1959 by the German musicologist Adolf Hoffmann, who selected a number of movements from Telemann’s orchestral suites and published them under this title, paraphrased in English, a ‘musical geography.’ He was inspired by a collection of songs written by Telemann: the Singende Geographie. Hoffmann’s intention, in his own words, was to provide an “instrumental counterpart” to Telemann’s song collection. The pieces represent various styles of dance music popular in various countries of Baroque-era Europe. Telemann held many appointments in various churches and courts in the early 1700s in what is now Germany, and was possibly one of the most prolific of all composers. In 1722 Telemann was offered the cantorship of the St. Thomas School, Leipzig, which he declined (the following year Graupner also declined, after which Bach applied). Godfather to Bach’s second son, Carl Philipp Emanuel, he and J.S. Bach had a strong but professionally competitive relationship throughout their lifetimes.

Shepherd’s HeyA trademark of the Australian composer Percy Grainger are his elaborate, artistic, and sometimes ‘groovy’ folk-song arrangements. A well-known example is ‘Shepherd’s Hey’, a traditional English tune to which people danced in former times, wearing bell-covered costumes. Grainger discovered it in the folk-song collection of the musicologist Cecil Sharp who, for his part, had heard the violinist of the Bidford Morris Dancers play the merry lively tune in 1906. The number of frequently played, different versions and numerous instrumentations ranging from piano to wind orchestra proves the popularity of Grainger’s arrangement. ‘Shepherd’s Hey’ is the ideal encore piece for each orchestra that wishes to make its audience leave the concert hall with smiles on their faces.

“Mother Ginger”Although not one of the best-known segments of The Nutcracker, Mother Ginger provides an example of Tchaikowsky at his most colorful. The work is in an ABA form and has a playful, child-like dancing quality. This scene from the second act of the ballet employs clowns, many young dancers and Mother Ginger herself, who enters in a giant hoop skirt dress than conceals a small army of children who charge out onto the stage to dance with the clowns to the buoyant and cheerful music.

Slavonic DanceDvorák wrote the Slavonic Dances in the late 1800s at the urging of the German music publisher Fritz Simrock, to whom he had been introduced by Johannes Brahms, an early supporter of Dvorák music. Simrock requested a set of dances for piano duet, and, seeking to capitalize on a vogue for eastern European folk dance music, he specified that they should be based upon the music of the composer’s Bohemian homeland. Dvorák produced a set of eight original dance pieces that did not quote any existing traditional dances but evoked their spirit. The set (Op. 46) proved so popular that, eight years later, Dvorák composed a second set of eight dances (Op. 72). Both feature a variety of traditional forms, including polkas, kolos, sousedsky, and dumky. This particular dance is in a style called a Furiant and is characterized by a rhythmic feel that juxtaposes a three-quarter time waltz feel with a larger duple division of the beat, along with a juxtaposition of major vs. minor modality and forceful, energetic themes vs. more lyrical, calm themes.

Alison Gaines, Music Director and ConductorAshokan FarewellAshokan Farewell was named for Ashokan, a camp in the Catskill Mountains not far from Woodstock, NY, and was featured in Ken Burn’s documentary series on the Civil War. It is also the name of the place where composer and fiddler Jay Unger has run the Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Camps for adults and families since 1980. As Unger put it: “I was feeling a great sense of loss and longing for the music, the dancing and the community of people that had developed at Ashokan. I had no idea that this simple tune could affect others in the same way. Ashokan Farewell was written in the style of a Scottish lament. I sometimes introduce it as, ‘a Scottish lament written by a Jewish guy from the Bronx.’ ”

Rumanian Folk DancesIn 1909 Hungarian composer Bela Bartók began to collect Romanian folk music around the Eastern European city of Beius. He also continued collecting in the following year and in 1912-1913, making several tours in various Romanian regions of Eastern Hungary (now Romania). Based on the material collected, in 1915 he composed the piano piece Romanian Folk Dances. In 1917 he also arranged it for orchestra, and in 1925 Zoltán Székely made a highly successful transcription for violin and piano. The only five- or six-minute long piece consists of six movements, six separate dances. The 1 Jocul cu bâta (Stick Dance) was collected from two Gypsies—a violinist and a folk viola player—in Mezo”szabad/Voiniceni, the 2 Brâul (Round Dance) and 3 Pe loc (Stamping) pair dance from a piper in Egres/Igris, the 4 Buciumeana (Dance of Bucium) with a three-quarter time from a Gypsy violinist in Bucsony/Bucium, the 5 Poarga româneasca (Romanian Polka) from a Romanian fiddler in Belényes/Beius, just like the 6 Maruntelul (Short steps) fast pair dance. The pieces are played almost without pause, one right into the other culminating in an exciting finale with the final dance.

Puerto de LibertadThis piece has been described as “Santana” meets string orchestra. The piece has three sections: a recurring call and response riff, a lyrical melody in four-part harmony, and soli sections jamming on a two-chord vamp. This piece also gives the percussion section the chance to cut loose on the cowbell, guiro and congas. Randy Sabien himself is a jazz violinist, composer and recording artist as well as an educator and dean of a college conservatory. His books on improvisation techniques for strings harken back to his days at Berklee School of Music in Boston where he was asked to join the faculty immediately upon his graduation from the same school.
