The United Republic of Tanzania

The United Republic of Tanzania is located

on the east coast of the continent of Africa,

around the mid-way mark. The United Re-

public of Tanzania was formed out of the

union of two sovereign states namely Tan-

ganyika and Zanzibar. Tanganyika became a

sovereign state on 9th December, 1961 and

became a Republic the following year. Zanzi-

bar became independent on 10th December,

1963 and the People's Republic of Zanzibar

was established after the revolution of 12th

January, 1964. The two sovereign republics

formed the United Republic of Tanzania on

The Maasai

The Maasai (sometimes

s pe l l e d "M as a i " ) a r e

a Nilotic ethnic group of semi-

nomadic people inhabiting

southern Kenya and northern-

Tanzania. They are among the

best known local populations

due to their residence near

the many game parks

of Southeast Africa, and their

distinctive customs and dress.

The Maasai speak Maa, a

member of the Ni lo-

Saharan language family that

is related to Dinka and Nuer.

They are also educated in the

official languages of Kenya

a n d T a n z a -

nia, Swahili and English. The

Maasai population is approxi-

mately a combined 1,000,000

in Kenya & Tanzania.

The Tanzanian and Kenyan

governments have instituted

programs to encourage the

Maasai to abandon their tradi-

tional semi-nomadic lifestyle,

but thankfully the people have

continued their age-old cus-

toms.Recently, Oxfam has

claimed that the lifestyle of

the Maasai should be em-

braced as a response to cli-

mate change because of their

ability to farm in deserts and

scrublands. Many Maasai

tribes throughout Tanzania

and Kenya welcome visits to

their village to experience

their culture, traditions, and

lifestyle.

DAY 8 EMBULBUL DEPRESSION—ARUSHA

After a leisurely breakfast at our campsite and local exploration, we make our way back to

the Ngorongoro crater highlands. Enjoy a walking safari through farms and villages on the

rift valley escarpment. You discover the farming, irrigation and cattle husbandry tech-

niques, visit houses and, if you want, sample local cuisine of the Iraqw tribe. There is also

traditional wood-fired brick making, local musicians and you generally gain a deeper un-

derstanding of the lifestyle of the people who live here. Transfer back to Arusha for over-

night.

AHADI LODGE (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 9 ARUSHA

Traditional cooking is on the menu today as we receive instruction from local women on

Swahili recipes, stories and history. We follow this up with Tinga Tinga painting lessons in

the afternoon – the traditional art style of Tanzania.
