The Club of Humanity, a group active in Mogappair, Anna Nagar and Kilpauk were felicitated on June 21 (Friday) by Dr Mohan Rajan, Chairman & Medical Direc-tor, Rajan Eye Care Hospital. The group coming together about a year ago has actively
campaigned for eye donation in a bid to help patients suffer-ing from corneal blindness.
The group has until now successfully helped harvest 6 pairs of eyes resulting in re-storing vision to about 12 people.
A recipient of a cornea was
also felicitated by the founder of the Club of Humanity Mr. Mathurdas B Soni.
The Club of Humanity meets every third Sunday in Mogappair.
Those interested to volunteer may contact 9884135946/ 9962210575.

Residents of the Central Public Works Depart-ment (CPWD) Quar-
ters, students, parents and teachers of the Kendriya Vidy-alaya Anna Nagar on the Jawaharlal Nehru Salai or 100 Feet Road in Thirumangalam are eagerly looking up to the Madras High Court to know if they would soon be able to take a ‘U’ Turn near their premises.
On Monday (July 1), the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) will have to submit in the Madras High Court a fea-
sibility report on providing a ‘U’ Turn or alternative arrange-ment for the students, residents and pedestrians to easily cross the road near the place where the Thirumangalam flyover ends. The Kendriya Vidyalaya Anna Nagar, a Central Gov-ernment run institution, is lo-cated inside the CPWD Quar-ters. Presently in the absence of any zebra crossing or ‘U’ Turn in the vicinity, the stu-dents, residents and pedestri-ans are forced to go a long way to take a ‘U’ Turn near Koy-ambedu flyover to reach the school. Many of them danger-
ously seek to cross the road, which has high vehicular traf-fic density, by jay walking and jumping over the road median or trying to squeeze in at avail-able gaps in the road median.
Significantly Mogappair Mail had twice in recent years highlighted the problem faced by local resident, pedestrians and students on account of this. In February 2017, in a report your neighbourhood weekly had highlighted how the absence of a traffic signal at the Thirumangalam junc-tion was posing hurdles for people. Again in June 2018
when the State Government proposed to construct a foot over bridge, a second such fa-cility in Anna Nagar, near the CPWD Quarters, the Mogap-pair Mail had reported that this would be a boon to locals who are struggling to cross the road.
While there was no progress on the proposal to construct a foot over bridge, an advocate E Ranganayaki had moved the Madras High Court with a public interest litigation (PIL) petition seeking a direction to the police to create a pedes-trian crossing or constructing
a foot over bridge near the Kendriya Vidyalaya Anna Nagar.
Last week, during the hear-ing on the petition, the Gov-ernment Advocate appealed to a Division Bench of the Ma-dras High Court comprising Justice S Manikumar and Justice Subramonium Prasad, to grant time to respond to the plea. Following this the judges granted time till July 11 for the police to submit a report on the feasibility of providing a ‘U’ Turn or alternative arrange-ment at for helping the public at the spot.

Residents in this part of the city are yet to see the impact
of the rain water drains for it has not been pouring down heavily since the drains constructed and
new roads laid. But the residents were
in for a shock as they woke up last monday to flooded streets. Not be-cause of any sudden downpour but due to over-flowing sewage.
A 40 ft road dividing
Mohanram Nagar and VGP Nagar had sewage gushing out of a pit dug by a private telecom operator. Drilling undergound dam-aged the 600 mm sewer pipeline from Korattur pumping station to Koy-ambedu. Being morning hours, school children and office goers had a tough time negotiating the road stagnant with sewage pools.
Most affected was the adjacent Shravan street
that had slush upto two feet and most affected were a few flats. Residents complained that the sew-age had entered their sumps. Surprisingly, the broad road was black topped only few days ago, with white lines painted and reflectors fixed. Cer-tainly a waste of resources to allow digging work again in a newly laid road.
Though the officials turned up a bit late, there were a few like minded
Sewage pipeline damaged, road flooded with slushpeople who tried their bit to contain the slush. K V Thilagar, a social worker was one among the first to report doing his bit.
Venkatesan, who col-lects garbage from houses was yet another person busy opening the manhole covers of the rain water
drains which to a great extent cut down the flood-ing of sewage. According to sources in Chennai Metrowater, the private telecom service operator had dug up the road with-out permission from Greater Chennai Corpora-tion or Metrowater.
Venkatesan, stood the challenge by opening the manhole covers. (Right) Sewage gushing out of the damaged pipe.

Music boosts academic performance
High school students who take music courses score significantly better in exams than their non-musical peers, says a study. For the study published in The Journal of Educational Psy-chology, researchers examined over one lakh students in public schools in British Columbia, Canada. “Students who learned to play a musi-cal instrument not only scored significantly higher but were about one academic year ahead of their non-music peers with regard to their English, Mathematics and Science skills, regard-less of their socioeconomic background, ethnic-ity, and gender,” said a Professor at the Univer-sity of British Columbia. The research team also found that predictive relationship between music education and academic achievement were more pronounced for those who took instrumental music rather than vocal music.
The findings suggest skills learned in instru-mental music transfer very broadly to the stu-dents’ learning in school. “A student has to learn to read music notation, develop eye-hand-mind coordination, develop keen listening skills, de-velop team skills for playing in an ensemble and develop discipline to practice... all these experi-ences play a role in enhancing the learner’s cognitive capacities, executive functions, motiva-tion to learn in school, and self-efficacy,” said another Assistant Professor at the varsity.

Local residents and mo-torists have urged the au-thorities concerned to build a wall to seal a newly con-structed culvert along the flood carrier near Gangai Amman Koil Road, close to Mogappair East a few metres away from the Mad-uravoyal New Bridge Road. The culvert was constructed in recent months at the entry of the Gangai Amman Koil Road. However, one end of it has not been closed ex-posing the road users to the potential threat of slipping and falling into the canal.
“We do understand that the contractor is yet to complete work on the cul-vert and it may take some time to seal the opening with a concrete structure. However, in the interim period, what we suggest is that the opening must be covered either with a tem-porary tin sheet or wooden
plank to prevent anyone from accidentally tripping and falling into the flood carrier below,” said Deva-sirvatham, a local resident of Gangai Amman Koil Road.
As it is the culvert is lo-cated on an elevated stretch, at a height much above the road level on the Church Street end. Due to this, as reported in Mogap-pair Mail recently motor-ists are finding it difficult to ascend as well as descend on the steep road. Locals fear that unless the culvert is fully covered – either temporarily or permanent-ly – the risk of motorists, especially two wheelers skidding and falling into the flood carrier cannot be ruled out.
For pedestrians too the opening on the newly con-structed culvert could pose a threat. “At nights when visibility is poor, pedestri-ans may not realise that there is a wide opening at
the culvert and in the pro-cess of giving way to a passing vehicle they could actually trip and fall into the canal. I wonder what prevents the contractor, who has been assigned the task of constructing the culvert, from placing a temporary structure to block the opening and save everyone,” said another resident, who, however, did not wish to identify him-self. “The sooner this is done it is better as we can’t wait for a tragedy or acci-dent to open our eyes, you see,” he added.
Plea to construct wall at culvert near flood carrier Sensational folk singer
and composer Anthony Daasan, signed exclusively to Sony Music, recently created a buzz by gate-crashing weddings and family celebrations much to the delight and awe of guests present.
He performed some of his viral film hits like Soda-kku and Ahaa Kalyanam and some of his folk Pop hits like Yele Karuvaachi, Maane Maane & Kanna Kuzhi Azhagi at these places.
These impromptu per-
formances mostly got sev-eral guests to shake a leg and take selfies with An-thony Daasan post his performance.
This is the first time that such a unique initiative has been undertaken by Sony Music in order to promote Tamil music and the real stars behind the music in the South.
He was accompanied by his musicians who consti-tute a part of Anthony and party, his band comprising Thavil, Nadaswaram, Paa-rai from Tanjavur. These
musicians delivered a rus-tic and authentic folk mu-sic performance that en-thralled all the guests.
Says Anthony Daasan,” I am glad to be a part of such a fun initiative that promotes folk music and its musicians. I am personally proud that along with Sony Music, I am the first to bring about this unique collaboration. Hopefully, this will intensify efforts that are much needed to create an awareness to-wards the authentic folk music of our land”.

Pedestrians continue to confront the problem of footpaths being blocked intermittently due to dumping of construction materials and debris along the road in Shanthi Colony
in Anna Nagar.In recent months,
Mogappair Mail had twice highlighted in its columns – September 2018 and December 2018 – that building construction ma-terial and the debris gener-ated during construction
activity are dumped on the footpaths in Shanthi Colo-ny, a residential-cum-com-mercial area on Anna Nagar Fourth Avenue Road.
Locals now complain that the problem is continu-ing unabated and there are
absolutely no measures being taken by the authori-ties concerned to end the menace.
Pedestrians lament that even now they are forced to step on to the road as debris generated due to demolition of buildings or a portion of concrete struc-ture, wooden poles used to erect scaffolding for carry-ing out construction activ-ity, hollow cement blocks and sand are mindlessly dumped on the footpaths in quite a few places in Shanthi Colony much to their chagrin.
"As this is a commercial and residential area, on and oft we come across some construction activity or the other going on in the neighbourhood. And each
time we find that the work-ers dump the debris and construction material on the footpath. As per rule governing construction activities, the sand, bricks and cement have to be stored only inside the premises where construc-tion work is being under-taken. It cannot be kept on the road and pedestrian pathways as they end up blocking the right to free access to public space," said Arunchalam, a resi-dent of an apartment in Shanthi Colony.
According to him, when building debris is dumped in public places, the Great-er Chennai Corporation is empowered to impose a penalty on the owner of the premises for being irre-
Dumping of construction debris on footpath unabated sponsible in discarding waste materials. "Not just that even the Chennai City Traffic Police can take ac-tion against the owners and building contractors for causing nuisance to public by blocking pathways. But very rarely such action is taken. Usually local coun-cillors or their representa-tives turn up at construc-tion spots to question such dumping but now we do not have local body repre-sentatives as civic elections have not been held," added Arunachalam.
