Cultural Heritage
My grandmother was white and black. My grandfather was French and black. His
mother was a daughter of slaves from France. My cultural is rich in diversity.
Unfortunately I was never able to meet any of my great or grand fathers. My grandfather
spoke a different language and my mother couldn’t understand him. My father was given
a way at birth. I learned about my grandmother from my uncles and aunties.
Nevertheless, I have embraced my heritage. My cultural heritage defines my beliefs and
who I am.
Ethnicity is a shared pattern of characteristics such as cultural heritage,
nationality, race, religion, and language. Everyone belongs to one or more ethnic groups.
By contrast, culture is the behavior, patterns, beliefs, and all other products — of a
particular group of people — that are passed on from generation to generation. Culture is
the result of interactions among groups of people and their environments over many
years.
My children are mixed with White Native American and French. I have always
explained to them that cultural is important. Thus, I am unable to share the differences
that they may feel in school. I instill diversity is the antecedent to understanding. I tell
them never judge anyone by there gender our race. They are remarkable. Sometimes they
are confused when their teacher talks about culture. They are unsure what culture to
identify with. I tell my children to stay open. I explain to them, that acceptance come
from within. What they feel comfortable with, is what should identify with? Children

learn about valued traits and characteristics from their families, friends, teachers, and the
world around them. This is how social and cultural influences blend to influence children.
Often, despite a significant presence, cultural heritage is elusive and hidden with
a child. Cultural beliefs are unstated and unconscious because children absorb such
beliefs through many lessons within their homes. The more subtle the difference, the
more difficult it is to recognize culture.
The United States is a melting pot. Diversity is essential in all teachers
curriculum. Thus, all teachers have to meet requirement in order to meet the exit exam.
Maria can set her native student aside. She can ask him about his views on the project.
Maria may have to do extra work. Her student can write a report about his cultural and
his beliefs. Within the U.S., there is great linguistic and cultural diversity. Some cultural
groups support individualistic values and some support collectivist ones.
Humans vary in their view and beliefs. This belief s defines who we are.
Individualism as a cultural position has a set of values that gives priority to personal
goals rather than to group goals.
In closing, Maria should focus on here students impute on the project. This may
help him feel apart of the class and the discussion. All student shave to feel connected to
discussions. This will help them brainstorm. The may agree with the view of the other
students Collectivism as a cultural position has a set of values that supports the
advancement of the group. Regardless of the orientation — individualistic or collectivist

— some people misunderstand people from other cultures. Sometimes, these
misunderstandings of perspective lead to racial prejudice.

Assignment 2: Final Project
During the last phase of the project, a problem suddenly comes to Maria’s attention.
Dwayne, a student of Native American origin, is resisting participating in the final phase

that entails recommending a proposed solution to protect and repopulate the endangered
species. Dwayne’s assigned species is the North American Polar Bear. Dwayne’s beliefs
are largely influenced by his traditional, cultural values that propound that certain species
are essential to the survival of groups of Native American people. This is incongruous
with what conventional scientists and biologists regard as the definition of an endangered
species and is precisely the position that is being supported by Maria’s project.
Consequently, the manner in which Dwayne approaches the issue of endangered species
is very different from what Maria had in mind.
