    1951 HRA barrels

I asked how far back the HRA replacement barrels go and was told that they start in 1-1951. If so,where are they all? I have 7-51, I've seen 6-51 and 11-51 and thats it.

I've got an HRA, 5.6 mil with a 4-55 barrel. Anyone got one lower? Anyway, I wasn't sure HRAever "replaced" their barrels. They came out after all the fighting so a good many, if not all, neversaw action. So, with that said, why would they replace their barrels? Just wondered.J.R.

    -RIGHT SIDE HRA-8-51 P-

Well, I guess there are a few out there.

SA with a HRA '52 barrel(in the white) would be a real replacement I guess.

Here's a tidbit: All the HRA barrels I've seen up until 4-52 will be marked like the 8-'51 above.

Then right at 5-52 they went with the new type nomenclature where the information moves to theside along with the date and a DAS.

    "old" style

I have a post war rebuild late 43 receiver with a like new 3 of 52 HRA barrel. Alot of the early, preH&R Rifle contract, barrels were used for rebuilds. You also find, as per Scott Duff, that starting around the 5.72 range heavy usage of LMR barrels

appears. Also SA and out-of-sync HRA barrels manufactured in late 1951 through mid 1954 wereused during this period. Duff also states that " Near the end of production H&R again began usingbarrels contemporary to the period of rifle manufacture."I am not sure as to the date H&R was awarded the contract to produce barrels but I have not

heard of any barrels dated prior to 7 of 51. In fact, until reading this post, 8 of 51 was the earliestHRA barrel I heard of.

J.R., It was not the H&R rifles that these early 51 and 52 barrels were being installed as replacements on, itwas the older WW2 era SA's, and Winchesters that had seen a good deal of use and were being rebarreledduring overhaul by U.S. Govt Arsenals. Also keep in mind that HRA, IHC and even Winchester were not inthe business of replacing barrels. Once the manufacture, in this case HRA, delivered the rifles to the U.S.Govt. the maintainance and repair was no longer a function of the manufacturer. I left out SA as SA, being a"Govt. Arsenal" did overhaul M1 rifles, regardless of who the original manufacture was.Hope this helps a bit.

As far as a 5.6 with a HRA barrel dated before 4 of 55, there is a list of HRA serial numbers and barrel dateson this forum. It shows quite a few rifles in the 5.6 range with barrel dates between 1 of 55 and 3 of 55. Alsoalot of LMR barrels within this serial block.

I had a 4.2 SA with a 51 HRA barrel on it. It was also a O-66 USMC rebuild. I ended up selling it as i neededthe money. I thought it was kinda odd for a 4.2.

Could make up a nice story for that rifle if it was an early 4.2 mil. That as a brand new rifle it ended up inKorea. The SA barrel got damaged. Take your pick, shot off, blown off, bent, whatever you choose. It had anew 1951 HRA barrel installed at an overseas rebuild facility. The rifle was never issued again so when it hitAlbany Ga. or Barstow Calif. in 1966 the still like new 1951 HRA barrel was not replaced.Nice to dream isn't it ??

Oh boy, woould I kill for something like that. That's almost better than the guy who has the IHC with theLMR and '65 rebuild to boot. And I kind of buy JoeW2111's story too!

I've got a 12-51 HRA barrel on a 405,0xx Springfield. Most likely an HRA replacement on a WWII rifle asJoeW2111 described.

Well, I guess they are out there; glad I asked. But so far 6-51 is the earliest that I've seen. No doubt thereare some earlier ones out there too.

-some can cause incidental confusion if they are installed by default on HRA receivers.-

Right. A replacement could be misconstrued as an original since they look pretty much alike. Thiswould be mostlly fifty ones and fifty two's I would guess. And judging from several compilations ofnumbers I've looked at they are don't show up much. The HRA's didn't seem to see much use and ofseveral hundred numbers I've looked at, most have their original barrels. Maybe a half dozen 1952show up in the middle somewhere.

Then '52 barrels show up a lot towards the very end when the early rejects were utilized. Here is asnippet of a list of late rifles:

Here's my 6/51 barrel. I showed a picture of it the other day. It is blued and doesn't have the cut outfor the lower band pin. It came off of a late HRA and was removed by the previous owner before herealized it was probably correct. My guess is that it is a preproduction item that was used to makeone more rifle.

If someone has a picture of an earlier barrel I'd love to see it.

    Thanks, Jim S.
