    Volumes

    Volumes represent logical storage

    Data ONTAP allows up to 500 volumes per

    storage system

    Volumes are accessible through supported

    protocols such as CIFS or NFS Data ONTAP 8.0 and later supports the

    following types of volumes:

    Flexible volumes, also known as FlexVol

    volumes

    Traditional volumes (deprecated)

    Additional product-specific volumes such as

    SnapLock volumes and FlexClone volumes

    Rules for Volumes

    A volume name must:

    Begin with either a letter or underscore

    character (_)

    Contain only letters, digits, and underscore

    characters Contain no more than 255 characters

    The maximum size of a flexible volume is

    limited by the maximum containing aggregate

    size with a space guaranteed volume

    (Discussed in Module 12)

    Root Volumes

    One root volume per storage system

    Only 32-bit aggregate is recommended

    Minimum recommended size is 2 GB (1-GB

    swapfile used on root)

    Root volume contains the /etc directory

    Root volume is accessible using:

    /vol/vol_namesuch as /vol/vol0

    Flexible volumes manage the logical layer

    independent of the physical layer

    Multiple flexible volumes can exist within a

    single aggregate

    Creating a Flexible Volume

    To create a flexible volume using the CLI:system> vol create volnameaggrnamesize[k|m|g|t]

    To create a flexible volume using NetApp

    System Manager, use the Volume Wizard

    When creating a flexible volume, you musthave the following information available:

    Volume name

    Aggregate name

    Language

    Space guarantee settings (Discussed in

    Module 12)

    The following is an example of a CLI entry

    used to create a flexible volume:

    Volume Administration

    To resize a volume:system> vol size volname [[+|-][k|m|g|t]]

    To offline a volume:system> vol offline volname

    To online a volume:system> vol online volname

    To destroy a volume:system> vol offline volname

    system> vol destroy volname

    Qtrees

    A qtree is:

    A logically defined file system

    A special subdirectory at the root of a volume

    Viewed as a directory by clients

    Qtrees allow the user to:

    Further partition data within a volume

    Establish unique quotas for the partitioned data

    Perform backup and recover with SnapVault

    Perform logical mirroring with SnapMirror

    To add a qtree using the CLI:
