c Rafael’s father was killed by a shark when Rafael was young. Rafael hated sharks after that. He killed them when he could. He learnt a lot about them and used them in his plan to kill the soldier. When he realized the truth, Rafael tried to kill himself in the sea full of sharks, but they did not kill him.

d Anita’s story shows that she was only a child. Her head was full of stories about magic. In them princesses fall in love with poor men. Her story shows that she loved Rafael first, and then the soldier later. It also shows that she was not very sensible.

18 a Anita ran away from the village with the soldier. She took Rafael’s gold ring with her, on her hand. Rafael’s plan to kill the soldier also killed Anita. Later he found her hand, with the ring, in the stomach of a shark. He took the ring from her dead hand and kept it round his neck.

b Rafael went mad because he killed Anita. She was the girl that he loved. First he tried to kill himself. He threw himself into a sea full of sharks. But the sharks did not kill him. He had to live with his terrible crime. This made him mad.
