Creative and Critical Thinking Days by Kirrily Martin and Luke Starczak

In celebration of this year's NAIDOC week, staff and students at MBHS came together to work toward a shared future. In week 9 last term Year 8 and 9 students were posed a question: How can we develop a shared future, whilst respecting the past? With what initially seemed an enormous question with hundreds of potential solutions, students were overwhelmed with choice. In order to combat this, and provide them with some background information to better answer the question, we invited a number of local Ngarrindjeri community members to speak with students about their culture and experiences. The students were thoroughly engaged throughout the sessions and left on Thursday feeling much more equipped with the knowledge required to answer the question. On Friday morning the students began working hard to develop a potential solution to the question and staff were astounded by their innovation, critical and creative thinking. Throughout the day they continued to impress their peers by leading an expo in the afternoon that showcased their work. We were incredibly pleased with the students' engagement and eagerness to learn about different cultures in our community as well as their commitment to creating a shared future.

Students worked on their ideas to answer the

question “How can we develop a shared future,

whilst respecting the past?

Bryan hosted a ‘Yellow Day’ on behalf of the

Monarto CFS for our PLP project to raise funds

for new equipment and repairs. The day

finished with a presentation from the Monarto

such as how fast a bedsheet burns, and

speeches from CFS volunteers Barrie and

Christina. The final funds raised came to

$88.60; on behalf of the CFS we would like to

thank everyone that helped make this day

possible and everyone that donated to this

amazing cause.

Aboriginal Power Cup by Lyndsee Frost

In Week 8 of Term 2 the Murray Bridge High School SAASTA team headed to Adelaide to participate in the Aboriginal Power Cup. This was an incredible opportunity for Year 10, 11 and 12 students to compete in a football carnival against all the other SAASTA academies from around the state. The Power Cup is offered to SAASTA students who have upheld the SAASTA KPIs surrounding attendance, academics and school expectations in Semester 1. Over the course of the Power Cup students participated in the football carnival for two days. The girls’ team were great competitors where they won some games and lost others. However, their teamwork and sportsmanship is to be commended as they approached each game with determination and spirit. The boys’ team were competitive over the two days. Throughout the carnival, they saw lots of success and only lost one game. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to get them into the Grand Final, but a magnificent effort none the less! Throughout the Carnival students performed their War Cry that they had developed at school, they attended a fete that provided students with different career, study and support options for when they finish school and had the opportunity to meet Port Power players. The final day of the Power Cup was spent in the Adelaide where students began their day with some shopping time in Rundle Mall. From there it was off to Elder Park for a picnic in the sun before arriving at Adelaide Oval. Once at the Oval students were ushered to their spots for a rehearsal of the Traditional Dance. SAASTA Academies then attended the SAASTA Awards Ceremony at the Oval before preparing for the Grand Final and the Traditional Dance. Just before Port Adelaide were to take the field to play Geelong, all the SAASTA academies came together to perform their Traditional Dance in front of the entire crowd. Our students did an amazing job and it was a real spectacle of the Power Cup. We finished the experience by watching the game between Port Adelaide and Geelong before heading home. Thank you to all the families that came down and supported the students and to the Aboriginal Education Team and the students for representing Murray Bridge High School in such a respectful way.

Winter Sounds by Alex McFarlane

Last term on Wednesday the 26th of July, the Winter Sounds performance was held in the Drama Workshop. Two consecutive packed houses were treated to some fabulous performances from our talented Music students. In Concert 1 we featured students from Year 8, 9 and 10 with a Rock and Pop Band focus. Concert 2, however, included Stage Bands and Concert Bands from Year 8, 9 and 10, headlined by the Senior Guitar Ensemble. Scattered throughout the evening were solo performances on piano, vocal and guitar from students of all year levels. The students portrayed themselves in a professional manner and produced some quality performances. The Senior Certificate III in Music (Sound Production) students demonstrated their competency with the well-drilled management of stage and sound, whilst Ms Love’s assistance with lighting was greatly appreciated.

Thanks must also go to Ms Schiller and Ms Moore who, with the assistance of their students, provided a tasty feed for all and Ms Waye, Ms Vodic, David Peterson and Deb Lang for donating their time. And of course, big praise must go to Mr Hickey, Ms Long and all the instrumental teachers for inspiring to bring out the best in all their students.

This new format was the first in a series of shows to replace our popular Music Showcase. Watch this space for information about the Creative Arts and Music Showcase on September the 25th, which will feature all our flagship ensembles; Concert Band 1, Concert Band 2, Vocal Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble and the newly formed Drumline. And don’t miss out this Wednesday the 31st of July, as MBHS Music students perform in a combined Murraylands schools’ event at the Town Hall with Julian Ferraretto, Lauren Henderson and the Murray Bridge Community Concert Band. Tickets available from www.trybooking.com/BDHBX.
