President’s Message
Once again greetings from the very
rocky hill in Castlemaine on what must
be the frostiest morning this year. A
friend rang this morning to inform me
that under her verandah here in
Castlemaine the temperature was minus
4°. Notwithstanding the cold it is
amazing what a little sunshine can do:
last Tuesday morning on my usual walk
around the garden I thought ‘a lovely
day, a little sunshine, time for a little
gardening’. 6 hours later, with time out
for lunch and morning tea, I had to ask
David if he could bring the wheelbarrow
up for me because I could hardly get
myself back to the house. All gardeners
I believe are a little bit mad.
This a very special issue of MULCH
given it is our 30th birthday edition. My
history with the Castlemaine & District
Garden Club does not go back 30 years,
it goes back 15 years. My introduction
to C&DGC was through Marion Cooke
sometime around 2001. Marion and
Cookie had recently moved to
Castlemaine. Marion and I were old
workmates and I had previously lived in
Castlemaine so any invitation to visit
was accepted with alacrity on my part.
It was during one of my visits that
Marion invited me along to a Garden
Club meeting and I loved it. At the time
I lived in a ground floor inner
Melbourne apartment, with a garden that
was a right angle strip 22ft across the
front and 36ft along the side of the
building. I was very proud of that
garden. I had trees, climber roses and a
big cactus gifted from my sister when
she fled the cold weather and moved to
Cairns.
Even though my father and grandfather
were very keen gardeners, I really knew
nothing about gardens except I loved the
idea of having one. It was one of my
visits to the C&DGC that I found out
that two of the trees I had planted, and
was so proud of, had invasive roots and
would likely damage the building I was
living in sooner rather than later. So
began my relationship with C&DGC.
Over the years I have had the
opportunity to meet some wonderful
people and listen to some fascinating
speakers on all manner of subjects. I
have visited some sublime gardens and
learned that I could do things I never
thought possible like building a dry
stone wall, make no dig gardens and
have a pond with plants and fish, all
inspired through my involvement with
Castlemaine & District Garden Club.
I would like to take this opportunity to
thank all of those wonderful people who
have put the time and effort into making
the C&DGC garden club what it is
today and I look forward to celebrating
40 Years in 2025.

FROM THE MINUTES
17th September 1981
. . . owing to a decrease in members attending our meetings, it was decided that unless we could improve members by Christmas, we would have to disband the Garden Club. There is to be an inaugural meeting of the Orchid Club on 20th October 19981 and we thought perhaps the Garden Club members could join this Club
19th November 1981
It was decided that this would be the last meeting due to insufficient support

FROM THE EDITOR
I hope you have enjoyed this
edition of MULCH, which
celebrates our thirty year of
reincarnation, as much as I have
enjoyed compiling it.
In the initial planning stage it was
suggested that there would not be
any Minutes for June, given the
Fish ‘n’ Chip Night. That decision
allowed the inclusion of an extra
two pages of illustrative material.
Things changed, and as you can see
there are Minutes for June included
in this edition. Allowing two pages
for the record of the Minutes this
gave the opportunity for another
two pages of material to illustrate
our thirty years of activity which I
am sure you will find of interest.
I hope that you all enjoy the
festivities associated with the
celebration of the 30th Birthday.
Christobel and I shall travelling
from Santiago de Compostella to
London on that day, so we are
going to miss what I am sure will
prove to be a wonderful
celebration.
