FIRST'.PLAY IN.NfW THEATER OPEHS"The Reluctant Debutante" played to packed houses last weekend

when the Pirate Playhouse opened Its doors for the first time. Bothperformances had been sold out for weeks, but tickets are on sale fora performance April 10 and another during Easier week on Saturday,April 24.

The Hunters came to the Islands from their Towndock Theater inPort Washington, New York, where, during the last ten years, theyproduced ninety plays in. a unique arena theater. Before their manyyears of broadcasting their own show, "Let's Go" on WOR Radio forthe Port of New York Authority, they appeared in stock, vaudevilleand on broadway. Ruth Hunter is the original Ellie May of "TobaccoRoad" and played the part 2,013 times in New York, She tells abouther experience in a new book being published this May by Expositionpress, N.Y., titled "Barefoot Girl on Broadway" with a forev/ard byCarl Sandburg. Scribners published some of her earlier books, "ComeBack on Tuesday," and "It Fell Upon a Day."

The Hunters are very proud of their Reluctant Debutante cast, whoare all Island residents Jerry Muench, Roy Bazire, PriscillaMurphy, Bob Dormer, and Jane Hines. They're also delighted withthe enthusiasm expressed for their Pirate Playhouse and look forwardto many seasons of good theater here.

And, in turn, Island residents and visitors seem elated over thedecor, lighting, stage setting, seating arrangement and acousticsand are proud that the historic old school house is being used for sucha fine cause and is in such good hands.

He is a swimming in-structor at Ridley's so he'llprobably be in the pool andGulf all the time unless theshelling bug hits him, which itvery well might, as he has nevershelled before.

PRISCILLA MURPHY en-tertained at a birthday dinnerparty for CLARENCE RUT-LAND and RUTH HUNTER.Other guests were PHILLIPHUNTER, PEGGY MALONEY,ANN JORDAN and SCOTTIECLARK. The dinner was givenat Priscilla's home.

Ross Meier Purdy died lastThursday at the age of 59, Aresident of Sanibel for the pasttwo years and a Sanibel postoffice employee, he and Mrs,Purdy moved here when heretired as Credit Manager ofShe lby Business Forms inShelby, Ohio. He had been withthe firm 35 years.

He was a member of theRoyal Post 2444, V.F.W., Ad-jutant of the Sanibel-CaptivaP o s t 123 American L e g i o n ,member of the Shelby Lodge250 F & M in Ohio, and atrustee of the Sanibel Com-munity Church.

He is survived by his wife,Mrs. Mary C. Purdy of San-ibel, his mother, two sistersand two b r o t h e r s . Funeralservices and interment tookplace in Shelby.

Recently a newly arrivedcouple to the Island were spend-ing an evening with me. Theyenthusiastically informed methat they had just bought asite at "The Rocks" wherethey were planning on build-ing a home. Just lately someothers had told me they weregoing to build at The Rocks,Then afterwards I wonderedif these precious folks who loveour Island really knew whatThe Rocks were and why thatsection got that name. It didn'tjust happen!

When I first arrived on theIsland there were less thanfifty registered voters, no mo-tels, only Casa Ybel, IslandInn, a few cottages and Bailey'sof course. But the gorgeousbeach has changed not at all,and shelling was always ourbest outdoor sport. We shelledfrom the light house beach onthe Gulf side to The Rocks.Not all the same day however!That's a long stretch. The latterwas quite a way west of IslandInn. The only way you couldget there was a trail along thebeach winding and twistingthrough a tropical jungle, deepsand and itAvas narrow. Therewere two or three places whereyou could pass another carby pulling over and waiting untilit had passed. More than a mileup the beach there was a wideroad which made a left turnto the top of the beach. It wasve y high here, more than 20feet above the water line andat low tide great slabs andmounds of coral rocks wereexposed. No loose rocks onlya solid mass. It was extensive,reddish brown in color andslippery with sea moss. It wasfull of indentations and a fas-

Last summer, Glenplayed the part of the Presi-dent's son in "Mr. President."The Walkers have come to Cap-tiva for many years. The Sanibel Shell Fair {andit Is a fair not just a shellshow} is held every year forone ve ry practical r e a s o n-which is belied by its humblebeginning. The Community As-sociation which runs the fair,n e e d s money for the main-tenance, up keep, repair, ad-ditions, etc. of the CommunityHouse and grounds.

The Community House isused bv the Audubon Society,The Shell Club, the Water As-sociation, the Chamber of Com-merce, the library, all publicfunc t ions , and mos t socialactivities.

are immune to geographicalboundaries. The "Shell Clubl a b o r s long and puts muchthought into the categorieswhich will draw the besf pos-sible e x h i b i t s . Infallibility,however , is not one of Gurvirtues, and every year, AFTERthe Shell Fair, we find ourselvesswamped with s u g g e s t i o n s .MOST are good and are in-corporated into next year's FairSome are not.

ALWAYS special emphasisis placed on Sanibel-Captivashells ( 7 categories this year)Beginners - Oldtimers - C h i 1-drens-Miniatures-AH trophieswere awarded to local exhibits,except one.

Good as these exhibits were,how much of a "Fair" would wehave had with only the localshells showing?

Loca l shel ls-do not ancNEVER HAVE competed againstforeign shells for prize con-sideration. Exh ib i t s competewith others in the same cate-gory only. In the "good olddays" cash prizes (substantialones at that) were awarded.It was through the efforts of theShell Club that ribbons andtrophies were substituted,believe it or not, peoplelike incentives. Trophiesribbons can do no harmdo e f f ec t ive ly stimulate in-terest.

We should, all of us, takepride in having so many worldtravelers on the islands -peoplewho take the time and have thewillingness to show what theyhave brought in from other pansof the world. Whatu t te rnon-sense to think this detracts fromthe show.
