ear friends: The musical stories we proudly present this season are more than just an exhilarating soundscape, they are a mirror into our collective soul. Great music gives voice to our shared tragedies, hopes, and dreams. Music at its core is story telling, and we often forget that fact particularly in the rarified hothouse of classical music. As musical curator I have come to believe
that great music provides catharsis, teaches, and helps us find meaning in our hasty lives. Listening and reflecting give us pause, and I hope that our concert experience will be a balm to your heart and mind. I will be your musical guide. Sometimes irreverent, sometimes serious, but always there to make the musical journey with you, I will give you some history, a little musical background, maybe even tell a joke or two. But I give you my solemn vow the orchestra and our guests will take you far away if you only let them. Whether Scheherezade and the Thousand and One Nights, Hansel and Gretel, Don Quixote, Paulus’ To Be Certain of the Dawn, or Andy Stein’s storied blend of classical jazz, we bring you the greatest music in the world but with a comfortable and laid back approach. Sit back, close your eyes, and we will tell you an unbelievable story. Thanks for listening! musically yours, Ken

Join in an act of communal healing as we come together to mourn
the tragedy of the Dakota Conflict and the hangings of 1862.
Minnesotan composer Stephen Paulus’ multimedia oratorio brings a message of hope and
forgiveness that will speak to us all. Inspired by pictures taken during the Holocaust, it
tells the story of faith and hope through the eyes of children. Still images will be projected
on the screen above the orchestra corresponding with the vignettes sung by choirs and
soloists. Composer Michael Daugherty describes his flute concerto Trail of Tears, inspired
by the forced removal and internment of Native Americans, as a musical journey into how
the human spirit discovers ways to deal with upheaval, adversity and adapting to a new
environment.

3/3/13As he plays through his standards, hear stories of Andy Stein’s
life and the music that inspired it. Jazz violinist and raconteur
Stein is a perennial Minnesota favorite who has appeared on A
Prairie Home Companion numerous times. Mozart’s Sinfonia
Concertante is the quintessential piece for two old friends to
play together. A musical conversation, the violin and viola have
equal roles and take turns displaying their virtuosity.
deconstructing don quixoteHost Sam Bergman brings his magical blend of history,
musical analysis, and whimsy to take a deeper look at
Strauss’ composition. The first half will be a musical
mystery tour of the piece. The second half will be the full rendition. Listen
for the cello, which is the voice of Don Quixote, and the viola which
portrays comical sidekick Sancho Panza. We welcome Concert Artists
Guild International Competition Winner Sebastian Bäverstam, making his
Mankato debut. A series of special events are planned around this concert in
collaboration with MSU’s Jim Grabowska and Kim Contag, leading experts
on all things Quixote.
