Divine JusticeOver a hundred avid worshippers in the temple in
Puttingal, Kollam District of Kerala, had a fiery landing inthe other world a few days back, of course, minus theirbodies, since TNT, doing its unlicensed dance to please theGods, got its job right. When the rest of the world stood still,it blasted away to glory leaving over a hundred dead.
God, who makes everything for His children, cannot bewatched over by mere policemen or every ammunitionstock examined for certification. A blasting licence needsno further scrutiny. It may also be a true depiction of whatGod was telling His worshippers that what He intended willhappen, no matter what.
Another school of thought that sprouted after the trag-edy seems to have been arguing that the pyrotechnicsinvolved were a wee bit lax and that the display was a weebit before its time. There was nothing wrong with thecontraption and the poor suckers hastened the fuse! Well, there comes the human bungle for all the world to see untilthe case goes to the Supreme Court 20 years later! The SCis full of 30, 40, 50 year old cases. We can hear, perhaps,a split verdict in about 50 years from now, by which timethe heroes and villains in the case would be dead! Shouldjustice crawl?
I venture to suggest that fireworks be banned in alltemples, their store houses, and any precincts dealing witha congregations of more than 10 people. No explosivesshould be licensed to be stored in any house of God! It isbecause of these manmade storms and thunders that weare unable to listen to God’s sane advice. God needs nophysical proof of his might through exhibitionism andpyrotechnics. Accept Him quietly to allow your brain togrow to full capacity. God is not a street show. You don’thave to prove anything because your presence on earth isto make you realise that the heaven you always sought ishere. You are part of it. You need not explode fireworks totell the world.

TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 3In the early days of movies, the word ‘Talkies’ was used as the
suffix to the name of a cinema theater as in SelectTalkies’, ‘Crown Talkies’ and such. These names appear
confusing - and even amusing – to foreigners in India and tothose studying the history of Indian Cinema. The word wasused by theater owners to
make it clear that it was wired and equipped for sound andthat it screened talking pictures and not silent movies. Evenafter movies began to talk in 1931, silent films continued to bemade for some more time and screened as before In India. So,at a given point of time in a town, both silent and talkingpictures were being screened in different theaters! To distin-guish between the two, the word ‘Talkies’ was added to the nameof the theater with sound equipment.
Such names continue to be in vogue even today in the 21st
century in many parts of India, especially in small towns andrural areas.
Indian Cinema played a significant role in the FreedomMovement, in spite of the rigid system of film censorship by theBritish government. Yet filmmakers used smart and subtlemethods to introduce the message of the struggle, mainlythrough songs. The role of Tamil Cinema in the FreedomMovement awaits a full and in-depth study till today.
Unfortunately there are no gramophone records (then com-monly known as “plates”) of the songs of “Kalidas”, and no printof the film has survived. Even the song-book is not traceableand, sadly, details about the names of its lyricist and musiccomposer and other technicians remain unknown.
“Kalidas” was the only Tamil talkie to be produced in 1931and it created history. A new aural age in cinema had dawnedand the role of film music began to take roots in the hearts, minds and souls of moviegoers.
In the same year, many silent films were produced in Madras. They were “Bhaktha Vatsal” (or “Durvaasa Garva Bangham”),“Leila, the Star of Mingrelia”, “Maya Madhusudhan”, “NaraNarayan”, “Praval Padmini” (or “Coral Queen”), “Rose ofRajasthan”, “Satharam”, “Signet Ring”(the latter-day pioneerand famed filmmaker, K. Subramanyam, then cutting histeeth in cinema, wrote its story and scenario), “Taranhar”(storyand scenario - K. Subramanyam) and “Vishwamitra”. Sadlythese films are lost forever in the limbo of time.
Even though the films were silent, they were accompaniedby background music provided in the cinema house by theexhibitor. Instrument players, mostly using harmonium andtabla and sometimes a flute, sat in the pit of the theater andthey played appropriate background music score. Interest-ingly the background score for the same movie varied fromtheater to theater - even from show to show - depending on themoods of the instrument players
who produced the score at a moment’s notice! Not any easyjob that! There were also men standing at a doorway in themiddle of the theater-wall and they narrated, in the locallanguage, the events on the screen and also spoke out thedialogues in their own fashion. Such men, known as “barkers”,enjoyed a certain degree of popularity and some of them weretreated as “stars” with fan following of their own! This practicewas in vogue in Japan and also in small towns and villages inIndia.
The silent films were less than 6000 feet in length and werescreened at the speed of 16 frames per second. The 35 mmsound films run at 24 frames per second. Another interestingfeature which was popular in that period in South India was ‘liveshows’ during the screening of a silent film. Projection would bestopped and dancers, mostly scantily dressed women, wouldcome on stage and perform dances for about fifteen to twentyminutes. Such dances were widely advertised in hand bills andthe crowds were larger on such days! (To be continued)

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Vegetable shop blocks pavementSir, A vegetable shop is encroaching on the pavement of Jubilee Road
at its junction with Thambiah Road, West Mambalam. The road at thejunction is already narrow.
Pedestrians are forced to walk on the busy road thereby risking theirlives. Will the Corporation authorities take action to evict the veg-etable shop from the pavement for the benefit of pedestrians? R.Mohan, West Mambalam.
Brackish water in open drains poses hazardSir, During the heavy rains followed by floods last December,
Rajamannar Salai and 80 Feet Road, K. K. Nagar got inundated. To drain the stagnant water, Corporation workers broke and re-
moved the slabs covering the storm water drains on the road.Four months have since passed and the storm water drains are yet
to be closed. The drains are filled with stinking, brackish water whichhas become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
It is posing a major health hazard for the residents of the street anda number of them have come down with vector diseases like viral feverand dengue. To add to their woes, the pavements on the stretch ofRajamannar Road between 80 Feet Road and Ponnambalam Roadjunctions are encroached upon by roadside vendors. Pedestrians areforced to walk on the road.
Will the authorities take action to pump out the stagnant water fromthe drains, and close them and also clear the encroachments?Seshasayee, Santhosh Colony, P. V. Rajamannar Road, K. K.Nagar
