bulbs along with the domesatop lamp-posts in the Corpo-ration Park on Lake View Roadin Nesapakkam.

According to the watchman,one was stolen on July 1 night.Another was stolen on June 29night. Two of the 7 lamp-postshave no bulbs now.

Imran Sheriff (24), who usedstolen motorcycles to indulgein chain snatching in K. K.Nagar, MGR Nagar, PondyBazaar and West Mambalamareas, were arrested by AshokNagar police on June 27.

A special team had beenformed to investigate the spateof chain snatchings.

When the team stopped thetwo in Ashok Nagar during aroutine check, they could notproduce the documents rel-evant to the 2-wheeler they

were riding and gave contradic-tory statements when ques-tioned.

When they were detained andinterrogated further they con-fessed to having snatchedchains from women.

They also admitted that theyhad stolen motorcycles fromPallikaranai and Velachery.

Police later recovered goldjewellery and motorcycles to-tally worth Rs. 8 lakhs fromthem.

The accused were producedin a city court which remandedthem to judicial custody.

Nagar),who masterminded the kid-napping of 18-month-oldManiraj (son of Murugan andSenthamizh Selvi, residents ofMurahari Salai, Sarathi Na-gar, West Saidapet) on June 16, and herassociates N. Na-gammal (42) of WestMamba-lam, D. Sumathi (28) of Saida-pet,and S. Sathyamurthy (45) of Porur werearrested on June 29.

Giving details of the case on June 30, J. K.Tripathy (Che-nnai Police Commissioner)told newsmen that Sivachalapa-thy, a busi-nessman residing in Erode who did not havechildren, went to an NGO in Ashok Nagarwhere he told Rosemary (a social worker)that he wanted to adopt a child as soon aspossible.

Rosemary is said to have referred him toIndira who told him that he could illegallyadopt a child immediately if he paid Rs. 3

lakhs as she had to settle withthe child’s parents. Sivacha-lapathy agreed to pay Rs. 2.5lakhs and gave her Rs. 60000as advance.

When Maniraj went missingfrom his house on June 16,police distributed pamphletswith his photograph in severalareas.

A resident of Porur called upand said that she had noticedthe child in the house ofSathyamurthy, an autorick-shaw driver, in Porur. Policerushed to house and found thebaby boy.

During interrogation, Sa-thyamurthy gave details of thekidnapping following which theothers were arrested.

According to police, Indirawas the brain behind the kid-napping.

On her instructions,Nagammal and her husbandNarayanan, son Lakshmanan,Sumathi, Kala and Illakkiyaroamed the city in search of achild playing on the street.

They found Maniraj aloneon the street and took himaway.

Senthamizh Selivi andAshwini (3) were inside thehouse.

His father Murugan worksin a plastic manufacturingcompany.

Traffic cops get e-challan devices,mobile traffic signals

devices were handed over to T.Nagar Traffic Sub-division lastweek, V. K. Surendran (Asst.Commissioner of Police, T.Nagar Traffic Sub-division)told Mambalam Times on July1. The e-challan system wasinaugurated by Chief MinisterJ. Jayalalithaa on June 27.

Surendran said that themobile traffic signals will beused during power failure in T.Nagar, West Mambalam,Ashok Nagar, K. K. Nagar,MGR Nagar, Jafferkhanpet,Nesapakkam and other areas.

The mobile traffic signalswork on solar energy but bat-teries have also been provi-ded.

Surendran said that e-challan devices have beengiven to all Traffic Sub-inspec-tors.

He said that when the regis-tration number of the vehicleis fed into the e-challan ma-

chine, it displays details includ-ing the name of the owner, chas-sis number and engine num-ber. Earlier traffic rule viola-tions and details of fines paidwill also be available. The de-vice will also say whether thevehicle has been reported to bestolen.
