NAIROBI, MY BIRTHPLACE!Ever since I could understand that we are given names

to avoid confusion, though I used to feel that the BritishEast African Colony of Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika hadsomething personal, honouring my father T. A. Nair, whowas the pick of the British postal department as the P.Ato the Post Master General of the colony and, to glorify therecognition, the whites had named the cool Kenya capitalNAIRobi.

I was released to the world in that cool city and, untilHitler’s madness touched the flash level and he overranmost of the eastern hemisphere obliging our escape to goodold Kannur in Kerala leaving father alone there, we lovedthe cool city.

The lovely government cottage and an oval park wherewe youngsters could play completed the recipe of beautifulliving. Mother used to say that her neighbours were fromGujarat, all good people, which is perhaps why I would loveto see Modi on the throne in Delhi.

Of the brood of the pre-war Nairobi consisting of myparents, two elder sisters and a younger brother, I am thesole survivor, the others having completed their innings onearth, leaving me high and dry to face this beautiful worldof good, bad and ugly people so that my education at 80 willbe more comprehensive than those who left the world in ahurry.

The Mall terroristic malignancy in Nairobi last week isin tune with the size of the biggest continent on the globewhere people always speak with their hands like our goodold friend Casca. My friend Idi Amin terrorised half theworld from Uganda because his astrologer had predictedthat he could be the ruler of the entire world! How can youcurb such a beautiful thought?

I am personally thankful to Nairobi for the good life thatmy father could give us through his fat remittances whichwere shepherded well by my mother beautifully. FriendObama’sfather, a Kenyan, must have had some contactwith my father in some official capacity. Let there be moreMall but no more mauls.

Abolishing death penalty will push up crime rateSir, in his ‘No holds barred’ column, M. A. Sadanand, minces no words

to condemn the death sentence awarded to the four involved in theDelhi gang rape case (Mambalam Times, Sept. 21-27). He is of theview that instead, the guilty should be made to live and suffer.

The intensity of the punishment usually depends on the intensity ofthe crime and also to create a fear and deter other from committingsuch crimes.

Even when capital punishment is meted out, there appears to be nopalpable change in the mindset of the criminals and the crime graphis only on an uptrend.

If the death sentence were to be abolished in the country, as has beentrotted out by many legal luminaries, will it not push up the graphfurther?

If, for instance, a criminal is instead awarded life imprisonment, hewill laugh his way to the jail, enjoying the life at the cost of the publicexchequer. How can we make him suffer in jail? By way of torturinghim, giving him arduous jobs or confining him in a solitary place?

Well, if the death sentence does not act as a deterrent in heinouscrimes, then we need to think in terms of hanging the criminal in fullpublic view.

It will be a cruelty to those who lay down their lives helplessly if wesympathize with the criminals. – V. S. Jayaraman, 31, MotilalStreet, T. Nagar

Metrowater not as prompt in supplyingwater as demanding tax

Sir, it is hilarious to see the press notificationissued by Metro-water directing the consum-ers to pay their dues towards water tax,by September 30.

Metrowater is the only government under-taking in the country demanding paymentof water tax without supplying water.Their water supply system is erratic, irregu-lar and uneven in distribution. I am living inthe foothills of double tank, 6th Sector, 27th

Street, K.K. Nagar, Chennai and we were get-ting water on alternate days. In spite of severalreminder emails, personal visits to concernedofficials and raising this problem during griev-ance redressing meetings in the past 21/2years, no permanent solution is seen. SinceMay even this has stopped and the pipeline hasrun dry. Still Metrowater demands tax.

Metrowater do not give any prior informa-tion about cession of water supply except whenan interconnection work is underway.— R.Sundararajan, 6th Sector, 27th Street,K.K. Nagar
