Wrong phone number given bypolice irks dentist

A city orthodontist, Dr. NPreethi (a West Mambalamresident), woke up on Wednes-day to continuous beeping ofher cellphone. The text mes-sages — there were around 30by the end of the day — said‘LOCKED HOUSE’, followedby an address.

Only when strangers calledher to say that they were leav-ing on a vacation and thattheir houses should be guar-ded, did it sink in that some-thing was seriously wrong. She soon discovered that

the Chennai city police hadgiven her mobile number(98407 00100) instead of thenumber for the locked houseSMS service that the policecirculated to the media onWednesday.

Police admitted it was a mis-take and gave the correct num-ber, 95000 99100, to send the‘locked house’ details. But thatwas only after Dr. Preethiwent to the office of T NagarDeputy Commissioner of Po-lice P. Pakalavan on Wednes-day evening.

She informed the officerabout what was happeningand showed him the messagesclogging her inbox.

“I usually get a few mes-sages; most of them fromfriends or from hospitals in-forming me about the statusof my patients,” said Preethi.

“But on Wednesday themessages came virtually non-stop. And I was perplexed asmost of the messages startedwith the words ‘LOCKEDHOUSE’,” she said.

She said she chose the num-ber ending in ‘100’.

“I have been using thecellphone number for sixyears. I learned only todaythat my number was adver-tised on the police website astheir service helpline,” Preethisaid. “After I started receiv-ing calls, I informed my hus-band and called the local po-lice,” she said.

Pakalavan gave instruc-tions to the team handling thewebsite to replace the num-ber with the correct one.

Several shopkeepers toldMambalam Times that in theprevious years, rush usuallybegan immediately afterAyudha Puja and extended tillPongal, but this year it wasabysmal even a couple ofweeks before Diwali.

Price rise is a prime factorand many shoppers are trim-ming expenses by buying onlyfor their children.

With many firms and evengovernment offices delayingbonuses, buyers have post-poned their shopping plans tothe last minute.

Years later, the life of Saint Thyagaraja was filmed again, this time in colour by the noted creative artist and seriousfilmmaker Bapu. J. V. Somayajulu, who had made a splashin ‘’Sankarabharanam” played the title role, supported bythe multi-lingual star K. R. Vijaya. In spite of them all, thefilm did not generate interest mainly because of the lastingimpression the earlier version with Chittoor V. Nagaiah hadcreated decades ago.

As an established star and talented actor, Nagaiah was indemand to do character roles in several Tamil and TeluguFilms. During the early 1950s, his old Vauhini friend K.Ramnoth made a film in Coimbatore, ‘Ezhai Padum Paadu’(1950) based on the famous French classic Victor Hugo’s ‘LesMiserables’. Ramnoth cast Nagaiah in the lead role of JeanVal Jean and he made this role one of the most memorable inSouth Indian Cinema. His splendid performance contributedmuch to the success of the film, which is today considered aclassic.

Besides doing the lead role in it, Nagaiah also composedthe music along with A. Rama Rao. Many songs in this filmbecame popular and are remembered to this day. Mentionmust be made of some of them: “Ennaasai papa”(Nagaiah),“Kanivudan unai kaanbeno” (P.A. Periyanayaki), “Vidhiyi!vilaivaal” (Jayalakshmi).

The last song was picturised by Ramnoth, the genius ofcinema, on the Lux Soap Beauty Kumari N. Rajam in a singleshot without a cut, the camera moving all the time throughvarious locations. This is technically a feat even by today’sstandards and Ramnoth did it more than half century agowith primitive equipment. It is a matter of deep regret andshame that this brilliant movie wizard has been forgottentoday.

This film was also done in Telugu and later in Hindi. Notmany are aware that the Tamil version was released onDeepawali Day, 1950 at Casino cinema, Madras which wastill then screening only English movies.

Another film Nagaiah acted in for his old friend Ramnothwas “Viduthalai”(1954) produced by the master filmmakerhimself. In the adaptation of a play by the leading Englishwriter John Galsworthy, named ‘’First and the Last’, Nagaiahplayed the lead role of a smart and ambitious lawyer whosends his innocent brother to jail. Technically superb andwell acted, the film failed the box-office, landing Ramnoth inmighty deep waters.

Another interesting film Nagaiah produced and played thehero in was “Bhagyalakshmi”. It was his first production andwas directed by P. Pullaiah in Telugu and released in 1943.Besides him the popular comedy pair of Tamil Cinema N. S.Krishnan - T. A. Mathuram appeared for the first time in aTelugu film. The film was a success and one song, a folkmelody, ‘’Thinney meedha sinnoda!” rendered by the notedactress and singer R. Balasaraswathi proved to be one of themost popular hits of early Telugu Cinema. BNR composedthe music.

Another hit of Nagaiah, a musical, was the Gemini Studiosproduction, ‘’Chakradhari” (1948). In the story of theMaharashtrian potter-saint Gora Kumbhar, he played thesaint and the songs of the film proved a major attractioncontributing to the success. Music was composed by theGemini team, Rajeswara Rao and M. D. Parthasarathy. Some of the songs rendered by Nagaiah became very famous, like “ Unakkum enakkum enna”, “Kaakkai siraginile” and“Ninainthu urugum”.

Pushpavalli and her sister Suryaprabha played the hero’stwo wives. The latter-day superstar of Tamil Cinema, GeminiGanesh, played a minor role as Lord Krishna. He was then onthe staff of Gemini Studios, handling the Casting Depart-ment

During his heyday, Nagaiah was a legendary figure. In hislater years, however, he found himself facing severe financialdifficulties and faced many hardships. He had to sell most ofhis assets and he found life harsh and hard. Because ofadvancing age the great actor had no option but to play evencowboy roles in third-rate ‘curry western’ Telugu films. Sosad indeed&

During Deepavali celebrations children getinjured due to careless handling of fireworks.Parents are indirectly responsible for theseaccidents as they fail to educated and guide thechildren on the correct ways of handling fire-works.

The Loss Prevention Association of IndiaLtd. (LPA), for the past few years, has beenguiding children and elders on the proper waysof handling fireworks.

Simple rules of safety as described in theSafety Bulletin of the Loss Prevention Asso-ciation are as follows:

Don’t light crackers inside the house, or lightcandles and oil lamps near curtains or anyother combustible material.

Hold sparklers away from the body.Light rockets pointing them straight up.Never light fireworks from balconies or near

Do’s and dont’s for safe handlingof crackers

buildings: use open grounds.Don’t bend over fireworks while lighting them:

light them from the side.Don’t wear long, loose, thin flowing dresses

while playing with fireworks.Never put fireworks in pockets.Never light fireworks under confinement in a

metal container.Never light a flower pot by holding it.Never store fireworks or unpack them near

a flame or a heat source.Never return to a firework once lit – it may

explode in your face.Pour water over burns and go to a doctor.

Don’t apply ointment, butter or any oily sub-stance.

Show concern for infants, the aged and thesick.

Don’t light loud crackers near them.

By Dr. K. A. VijayaraghavanKids start firing crackers and sparklers a

week before Deepavali and this continues uptoKarthigai Deepam.

During this cracker season, your pets getfrightened of the sounds, and tend to takeshelter under the cots in dark rooms.

Some dogs are so cared of these sounds thatthey do not even come out for answeringnature’s calls, and some even go off during theDeepavali season.

Is it not a pity that, when you and your familyare enjoying the lights and sounds, your petsshould spend their time in isolation and indarkness?

It is possible for you to train your dog also toenjoy the lights and sounds, and also the goodfood during this festival season.

The best approach will be to hold the dog andmake it watch while the sparklers and crack-

Train your dog to enjoy Deepavaliers go on, so that it will slowly cast off the fearfor them. Do not at all allow it to go under thecot. Your holding it will help the dog give up itsfear gradually.

This is very much like training your pet dogto walk on the road. If your pet had been mostlyan indoor dog and if you take it out on the roadall on sudden it will get scared of the vehiclesand the crowd on the road.

If you take it out for short distances regu-larly, it will cast off the fear and start walkingboldly on the road.

So, what is needed is a gradual exposure ofyour pet dog to the lights and sounds associatedwith Deepavali.

Do not feed your dog with too many sweetsduring the season. After giving a sweet or two, give it a raw carrot so that its teeth will getcleaned. If the dog allows it, clean its teeth withvinegar after it has consumed some sweets.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORCommercial ventures in residential neighbourhoods should be curbed

Sir, A very dangerous trend is emerging in T.Nagar, wherein the commercial complex own-ers, in a bid to expand their area of operationand quench their insatiable thirst to earn fur-ther, are targeting the nearby residential dwell-ings.

The modus operandi is to lure the ownersof the flats to sell their property by offeringthem hefty amounts. Once they are able totrap a few flat-owners to do so, they then deploypressure tactics to eject those who are hardnuts to crack.

Such are the crude methods employed thatit becomes impossible and intolerable for thestrong willed ones to bear the brunt and they

finally give up their fight. An ordinance or in its place a Bill must be

brought in by the State Government so as toput a ‘cap’ on any kind of commercial develop-ment in residential colonies of T. Nagar. Theshopping hub has already grown beyond itssize and any further tinkering, at the cost of itsprimary stake-holders, the residents, will onlyadd to its deterioration.

This must be treated as an SOS from thehapless residents of T. Nagar whoare already in dire straits due to excess com-mercialization leading to poor sanitation, pol-lution and host of other civic issues.— K.Harihar, 20 Venkatesan Street, T. Nagar
