Tho song of life would losu its mirth. Were there no children to begin i t ;

No little f rmo, like buds to grow. And make tiiu admiring heart surrender;

noli t t lo hands on breast and brow, To keep tho thrilling love-chords tender.

Tho stonier souls would grow more stern. Unfeeling nature more iubiiman,

And man to stoic coldnoss turn. And woman would bo less than woman.

Life's song, indeed, would lose its charm. Were there no babies to begin i t ;

A doleful place this world would be. Wore there no little people in it.

" Oh ,dea r ! I want a l i t t le c a r t ! " said five-vear-old Charlie, ly ing on h i s back o n t h e floor and kicking his feet u p in t h e air . " I don ' t know what to do, Gran 'ma. Grandma looked round f r o m tho l i t t le jacket she was cu t t ing out , and saw the marbles rol l ing all a round on tho door-step.

And she took down f rom the corner cupboa rd a low box wi thout any cover. I t was about e ight inches long and five inches wide, and an inch and a half deep. Grandma had used i t t o keep seeds in th rough the winter ; b u t t he seeds were all in the ground now look-ing ou t for themselves, and tho box was empty.

" Oh. you d o n ' t k n o w ! " said g rand-ma. " S e a b o r e ! " Aud she took a g imle t from t h e shelf aud bored two holes in one end of the box, and then fas tened a long cord in tho holes, so t h a t Charlie could fas ten himself in, a n d be a l i t t le horse.

Charlie was a very happy l i t t le gal-lop ing horse for a minute; b u t Grand-m a had no sooner got back to the j acke t , than t h e r e b e c a m e and stood pu l l ing the corner of her apron.

Then Grandma took a sha rp knife , a n d whitt led the ends of tho s t icks out small , and wi th four of her l i t t le car-p e t tacks she nailed the st icks on the bo t tom of t h e cart , so t ha t tho s h a r p e n d s stood o u t on each $iide.

Well, wilt, I've IK'UU to church to-day—boon to a **1 v!ii*b onr—

And Hi'vin' you cau't r o from homo, I 'd tell vou nhut »nt done;

You unuld have bton •tnrpriscd tu aoo what I Haw there to -da t ;

Tin niittont wen* flxud up *') flne they hardly IXIWIHI t o p ray .

I had ou thcaa coarao elothca of mine, not mneb the wjrae for wear,

But thou tbey knew I waan't one they called a mdiioniiire:

80 tiiey led f i e old nmn to a noat away hack bv the door;

'Twa 1 bookleNR and unctiahluned—a " reecrvod neat for the poor.

Pretty soon in came a Btrati>;er with gold liiiR a n d c lo tb in i ; l i n e ;

They I< 1 him t a eushiuned seat far in ad-vance ofluiue;

1 tbonchl that wasn't exactly right, to seat him up»o near.

When he was young, and I waa old and very bard to near.

Kut tin 11. there'# nn accountin' for what Home iK>ople ito;

Tlie lliifHt clothing; now-a-daya oft ueta tho flnmt pew;

But 7lieu we reach tho blessed home, all un-deflled bv tin.

We'll nee wealth besRin' at the gate, while poverty goes m.

I couldn't bear the aermou, I sat so far avrav, 80, through tbe Imurs of servioe, I could only

•' watch and pray Tbcn the dob/* of of the Cbri i tuns sitting

near me round about— Pray that God would make them pure within

as"they were Dure without.

While I sat there, lookiu" all around upon the rich and great,

I kept tbiukin' of the rich man and tho beggar at the ga le ;

How, by all but dogs forsaken, the poor beg-gar's form grew cold.

And the angels bore bis spirit to the mansiona built of gold;

Flow, at last the rich mau perished, and bis spirit took its flight

From tlie purple and line linen to the homt of endless n ight ;

There he learned, as he stood gazin' at tho lM>ggar iu the sky,

44 it isn't ill of life to live, nor of death to die."

I doubt 1101 there wero wealthy sires in that religious fold,

Who went up from their dwillin's like the Pharisee of o ld ;

Then returned home from their worship, with a bead uplifted high.

To spurn tho hungry Irom their door with naught to satisfy.

Out 1 out with such professions; they are doin' more to-day

To stop the weary sinner from tho Gospel's Hhinin' w a y -

Thau nil the books of intldels, than all that bas been tried

Since Christ was born at Bethlehem—since Christ wua crucilled.

How simple are the works of God, and yet bow very grand!

Tbe shells iu ocean caverns, the flowers on the land ;

He gilds the clouds of evenin' with tho gold riuht from his throne,

Not for the rich man only—not for the poor jdone.

Then why should man look down on man be-catue of lack ol gold ?

Why seat him in the poorest pow because his clothes are old?

A heart with noble motives—a heart that God h a s blest —

May be beat 111' heaven's music 'neath that faded coat and vest.

I ' m o l d - l m a y be chi ldish-but I love sim-nlicity;

I love to see it shinin' in a Christian piety ; Jesus told us in his sermons in Judea's monn-

taiu's wild, He that wants to go to heaven must bo like a

little child.

Our beads are growin' gray, dear wife; our hearts are beating slow ;

In a little while the Muster will call for us to go-

When we reach the pearly gateways, and look in with Joyful eves,

We'll see no stylish worship in tho tcmplo of the skies.
