The first known instance of the use of playback in TamilCinema took place in 1938 in ‘Nandakumar’. The film wasproduced in Poona (now Pune) as a partnership venture inMarathi and Tamil with the later day Indian movie mogulAV. Meiyappan as the partner of the Tamil version.

The film was directed by well known cameraman andMarathi filmmaker Keshav Rao Dhaibar. The cast includedT. R. Mahalingam (his film debut), T. P. Rajalakshmi, C.V.V.Panthulu , T. S. Rajalakshmi, T.R. Ramachandran (hisdebut) and others.

It was the first film for many of them. Helping Dhaibar forthe Tamil version in the script and direction was anothernewcomer, later the noted writer-director and producer, A.T. Krishnaswamy (ATK). The talented but sadly underratedfilm music composer, S. V. Venkataraman also came intofilms with ‘Nandakumar’. The ‘kid’ Krishna was playedby ‘Master’ Sethuraman. Later, as Madurai Sethuraman,he made a mark as the singer for noted Bharathanatyamdancers and toured all over the world. (A good pal of thiswriter, he passed away some years ago.) T. R. Mahalingamplayed the ‘boy’ Krishna and became a star with his veryfirst film.

A song sung by the actress playing Krishna’s motherDevaki was not up to mark and Meiyappan, ATK, Dhaibarand others were disappointed with the quality of her singing.Understandably they were eager to re-shoot the sequencewith some other star but, for many reasons, it was notfeasible.

Meiyappan and others thought hard and then came upwith an innovative idea. Why not replace only the soundtrack with another voice and shoot the song with the actressmoving only her lips in ‘sync’? (The movie world lingo for‘synchronization’). AVM gave the go-ahead signal and aprominent classical Carnatic musician based in Bombay,Lalitha Venkataraman, was brought in and she sang thatsong. The scene was re-shot with the actress moving her lipsto the Bombay musician’s singing. And, lo, the playbacksystem was born in Tamil cinema and Meiyappan madeSouth Indian film history! And Lalitha Venkataramanearned the credit of being the first playback singer in Tamilcinema.

Even after playback system became established and thepre-recording of songs before the shoot became technicallypossible, the songs were sung by the artistes themselvesand not by off-screen voice-lending playback singers. One ofthe earliest of off -screen singers was V. R. Dhanam (sisterof the noted stage, screen and TV star, late lamented V.Gopalakrishnan). The famed filmmaker of his day, SundarRao Nadkarni (He made films like ‘Haridas’, ‘ ShanthaSakkubai’, ‘En Manaivi’, ‘Krishna Vijayam’, ‘ Sudarshan’,and ‘Mahadevi’.) recorded a song for ‘Sakkubai’ (1939) whichhe picturised on T. S. Krishnaveni.

Another classical Carnatic musician who sang in filmsbehind the screen during late 1930s was the great exponentand star performer D. K. Pattammal. Her rendering of anemotionally charged patriotic song written by celebratedTamil writer and journalist, ‘Kalki’ ( Ra. Krishnamurthy)and composed by Papanasam Sivan, ‘ Desa Sevai SeyyaVaareer…’, in the Tamil film classic ‘Thyaga Bhoomi’ (1939)became very popular, reflecting the mood of the times whenthe atmosphere was charged with Indian Freedom Move-ment.

Interestingly, this song was not issued as a gramophonerecord along with the other songs of the film, and was broughtout later as a private disc by DKP with no mention of theorigin of the song. The producers were afraid that the recordmight be banned by the then British Indian rulers!

Other playback singers from the world of classical musicinclude (Radha) Jayalakshmi, K. J. Yesudas, MangalampalliBalamuralikrishna, P. Leela, and M. L. Vasanthakumari. She appeared on screen in a scene in R. S. Mani’s ‘KrishnaBhakthi’ (1948) singing s a song in a concert in a king’s court. She looked slim and very attractive in that scene!

By M. A. SADANANDNO HOLDS BARRED

When Das, my nephew and scion of the Royal family through hisfather Chirakkal T. Sreedharan Nair (the master Kalarippayatuexponent of Kerala and the author of the book published by Westland)told me that the present titular ruler of Chirakkal Kovilakam, SriKerala Varma Thamburan, is a permanent resident of ShanthiColony, hardly two km from my home, my own royal blood thirstedfor a pow-vow with royalty, because my maternal grandfather wasa Rajah, of a tiny princedom Aduthala Kovilagam, a few miles fromChirakkal.

My mother was the last of the Rajah’s generous product of 6children to my beautiful grandmother whose bewitchingbeauty conquered the narrow wall of caste, leaving me, my granny’sgrandson, to inherit the royal dark skin of Kerala Varma. I have theproud privilege of inheriting the royal epidermis, says my motherwho was probably 4 years old when the old bloke left for a meetingwith Yama leaving the Nair scions impoverished.

The link between the Royalty thus established, I wanted to meetthe present head of the Chirakkal Kovilagam, now a mere nameafter Indira abolished Royalty, of whom nephew Das spoke inglowing terms. The reigning Rajah Sri Kerala Varma, ValiaThamburan, is a retired Physical Director of a College in Madras,(Presidency College, I think he said) and that cemented our connec-tion further, because I had been a Presidentian, years beforeyoung muscles did not prevail over the skulled grey matter that nowleads to bus-wars.

Nephew Das and I were before Royalty and Mrs. Royalty. As ismandated by the Constitution of India, one of their sons is inObamaland and the other is in Bangalore.

His copious grey hair and walrus moustache and the robustphysique and a firm handshake, my debut with royalty, made mewonder whether my maternal grandfather was similarly endowed!Das, who was in Chirakkal then, when I expressed a desire to visitmy grandfather’s palace, took Lakshmi and me in his car to Aduthalabut there was not even a photograph of the elusive Rajah or even anoil painting. So all I can imagine is that my maternal royal grandfa-ther must have been a handsome strapper like me!

My day was made. Thank you, Das.

The Tamilnadu Cabinet on Sept.26 approved the new guidelines onsafety measures in school vehicles, the draft of which was submittedin the Madras High Court re-cently.

The State Government submit-ted a report before the court, layingfresh safety guidelines for schoolbuses in Tamilnadu in the wake ofthe death of a Class 2 student,Shruthi, on July 25 after she fellthrough a hole in the floor of herschool bus and was run over. The special rules lay stress onthe qualification and experience ofthe bus crew, stating that a drivershould have at least 5 years ofexperience in similar category ofvehicles and that he should nothave been fined more than twice ina year for minor traffic offencessuch as signal jumping or violationof lane discipline. He should nothave been booked even once for

offences such as overspeeding, drunken driving and dangerousdriving resulting in fatal accident. The crew shall wear a khaki uni-form too, the rules say.

As for attendants, the specialrules state that he/she should beaged between 21 and 50 years andshould be medically fit to get downfirst from the bus at each stoppingpoint to facilitate embarkation anddisembarkation of children. In caseof vehicles exclusively carryinggirl children, there shall be a fe-male attendant in the vehicle. School buses should be inspectedonce in three months, and a dis-trict-level committee headed by theRegional Transport Officer andhaving parent representatives shalldiscuss, decide and recommendmeasures relating to the safety ofchildren and their transportation. School heads welcomed the deci-sion to have an exclusive parent-

teacher association as part of theschool-level transport committee.Correspondent of Shree NiketanGroup of Schools P. Vishnucharansaid, “It is very important for us toget feedback about whether safetymeasures taken by the school aresatisfactory. The initiative will alsohelp parents understand the reali-ties faced when it comes to provid-ing school transportation for allchildren”.

Founder of Shri NatesanVidyasala N. Ramasubrahmanyamsaid, “The Government has beenvery practical in reproducing theSupreme Court guidelines on theissue. We can vouch for the fitnessof the vehicles but restricting thevehicles’ age would have put us indeep trouble. Schools expected theguidelines set to 7 to 8 years as themaximum of age for a vehicle usedto transport children”. Report cour-tesy The Times of India

The Madras High Court hasrefused to lift the police ban on useand sale of stone and glass pow-der-coated ‘maanja’ (kite thread)in Chennai.

Justice N. Paul Vasanthakumar, dismissing a writ petition filed byan association of kite sellers(Chennai Katradi UrpathiyalargalVirpanayalargal Sangam) last week, said that the regulatory measurewas introduced by police after thedeath of some persons, and purelyas a public safety initiative.

The association sought to re-strain the City Police Commis-sioner from interfering with themanufacture and sale of kites andthreads in Chennai, saying policeinterference was affecting the busi-ness of its members.

In the city, kite season begins in

Court upholds ban on glass powdercoated kite thread

August and ends in January, itsaid, adding that kite flying is arecognized legal pastime through-out the world. The associationsaid that its members procuredquality threads and used them in asafe manner.

Police, however, denied the al-legations of unwarranted interfer-ence in business and filed a counter-affidavit stating this year alone twopersons died after their throatswere slit by the ‘maanja’ thread. Inboth cases, ‘maanja’ threads wereseized and sent for forensic exami-nation.

Police said that traders applyrice paste and stone powder to thethread to make them stiff andstrong for flying kites. In somecases, crushed glass powder isused to make the thread fit for

cutting the opponent’s kite, theysaid. Such threads are prohibitedas they would endanger the livesof people if used on streets and inpublic. Noting that kite sale is notbeing prevented, police said thatonly dangerous threads are con-sidered illegal. The prohibition isreasonable and it is regulatory innature and not prohibitory, policesaid.

Justice Paul Vasanthakumarsaid: “It is a well accepted prin-ciple of law that when privateinterest and public safety are pittedagainst each other, public interestalone will prevail. Hence, the prayernot to restrict the petitioner (kitemakers and sellers) from using the‘maanja’ with coating cannot beaccepted.” Report courtesy TheTimes of India
