Advertised as ‘An Inspiring Film For Citizens Of Tomorrow’,‘Hum Panchi Ek Dal Ke’ was suggested to Meiyappan by thenoted Bombay-based writer-producer, Sadashiv Rao Kavi, who collaborated with him in the production with no stake in thecapital investment. However, he received credit as its Pro-ducer.

The title in Hindi means that we are all birds on the samebranch, used as a figure of speech to convey the underlyingmessage of unity of India. “We are citizens of one and samenation that is India, even though we may speak differentlanguages, follow different religions, dress differently, and havevarying customs but we are all Indians. Birds of differentfeathers, hues and colors but all live on the same branch of atree that is India!”

In fact, the idea of unity and oneness is carried further to theglobal level in the film, and the concept of world citizenship isstressed and driven home in a song and dance sequence in whichall major nations are represented. This was something new inIndian Cinema and blended well in a film for children. This iswhat made this film unique and different.

The film was directed by the noted writer and lyricist P. L.Santoshi. It also had melodious music composed by N. Dutta. The song rendered in chorus by the boys, with the first line ‘HumPanchi Ek Dal Ke’, became popular. Interestingly, as is thepractice in Indian Cinema, the voices for the boys in the songwere lent by female ‘playback’ singers!

The film had many young artistes like Jagdeep, Mohan Chotiand Daisy Irani, and they made a mark later in movies. DaisyIrani - impish, cherubic and full of mischief - was a popular childstar.

Not surprisingly, ‘Hum Panchi Ek Dal Ke’ won the PanditNehru Award for the Best Children’s Film in 1957. The awardhad been instituted in 1953 but no film had won the covetedprestigious award until this film did in 1957. Full marks toMeiyappan!

The Annual Film Awards were given at a glittering functionin Delhi and the awards were distributed personally by thePresident of India. The Prime Minister rarely attends suchfunctions. But this year Pandit Nehru attended the ceremonywhen Meiyappan received the award from Babu RajendraPrasad, President of India. Pandit Nehru congratulatedMeiyappan for his fine film for children.

Pandit Nehru later watched the film at a special screeningwith Meiyappan and the child artistes, and he was so deeplyimpressed that he invited Meiyappan and the artistes to hishome for breakfast, a rare honour indeed! Meiyappan had seenPandit Nehru at the inauguration of a famed science-institu-tion at Karaikudi established by the noted philanthropist Kv.Al. Rm. Alagappa Chettiar. Meiyappan had filmed the functionbut he had not met or known the Indian Prime Minister. Nowhe had the proud privilege of having breakfast with the world-renowned leader playing the host! A justifiably proud momentin Meiyappan’s life!

In spite of the awards, adulation and all, sadly, Meiyappandid not produce another film for children. The reasons areobvious and nobody could blame him. Cinema is only part art, also part business and a capital intensive industry!

!957 was a very successful and memorable year andMeiyappan had every reason to feel happy. Never one to reston his oars and laurels, he planned ahead to become one of thetop film producers of India ....
