MCDONALD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
EASTER TO PENTECOST SERMON SERIES
One the Sunday after Easter, we will begin a five-week sermon series called “Spiritual Gifts for an Epic Life.” Together we will explore the spiritual tools that God has blessed us with to thrive right where we are. Our God has specially equipped each of us to do amazing things for his Kingdom. Join us as we explore how God wants us to be in-
volved in ministry that is larger than life itself…that is Epic.
CHURCH CLEANUP DAY ~
SATURDAY , MAY 17TH
Help us make our church buildings look beautiful! Come and join us for a fun day of flower planting, mulch spreading, weeding, raking, and other projects.
Mulch Spreading: Our Trustees are beginning with the spread-
ing of mulch at 8:00 am. Meet in the Trinity Center Parking lot and bring a wheel bar-
row if you are able and a shovel. In addition to those transporting mulch we can also use
volunteers to clear weeds and prepare the beds for the mulch.
Flower Planting: Several ladies have worked together to coordinate a beautiful ar-rangement of flowers to be planted around our churches this year. They will also begin at 8:00 am with preparing beds, fertilizing and planting. Meet at Calvary center to con-nect with our flower planting team.
Deacon Flower Pickup and Sale: If you ordered flowers from the deacons, the flow-ers will be available for pickup along Grant Street on the Trinity lawn starting at 10:00am. There will also be a selection of nice potted outdoor planters for sale.
LIGHTING THE WAY—THANK YOU LUNCHEON
On May 18th we will gather in the fellowship hall of Calvary Center to mark the end of our three year campaign. That Sunday in worship some details will be given regarding the extent of the accomplishments of the campaign and key people will be recognized. This has been a full community effort, and everyone who has been active in our congre-gation for the past three years has contributed to this effort in one way or another. We will have a covered dish dinner with fried chicken and rolls provided. A-M please bring a side dish and N-Z please bring a salad or dessert.

Days of Anticipation
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what
seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:1-4
The days following the resurrection of our Lord Jesus were some incredible times that were filled with expectation, anticipation, and fear. The disciples were scattered for a time but then were called back together by a risen Savior. They were rebuked and loved; cherished and challenged to be who they were called to be. No one else could do the work that they were called to do. They were the ones that Jesus had invested in. They were the chosen ones to do the work of mission and ministry after his departure. But they were not expected to do it alone nor could they. The Holy Spirit had been promised to them but they had been directed to wait. (Acts 1:4) What a fascinating lesson for us. There are times in our spiritual journey when God clearly says “wait.” No-tice that he did not say: “Do something else for a while and I will let you know when I need you again.” No, that was not the instruction they had received, they were to be active in their pursuit of God’s grace. They were to spend time together, encouraging one another, praying together and seeking the face of Christ each and every day. They even had some serious business to attend to. They very carefully found a replacement for Judas among them. They were not asked to be idle, we are never asked to be that in the kingdom of God. Even our resting and our Sabbath has purpose and is filled with the pursuit of God’s everlasting love and grace. Skillful, purposeful waiting is a very important part of kingdom life. If we are following the spirit of God he will be revealing things to us, he will be giving us glimpses of what could be or what might be and he will ask us to wait for his timing to pursue them. These times of waiting should also be times of blessing, vitality, and growth. Much happens as God is shaping us for his next big thing.
In this time following Easter we are practicing an active kind of waiting. We are anticipating what God will do through us and with us. We are seeking to be “all together in one place” frequently for the purpose of prayer, worship, and encouragement. We will be doing the work of our Lord, and anticipating his mighty hand to move in our church and in our community. The disciples were rewarded with the gift of the Holy Spirit fol-lowing their time of waiting and we believe that we will be blessed as well.
Through our Sunday services we will be exploring different kinds of gifts that the Holy Spirit gives to us and how as members of the body we can put them to use for his kingdom. In June we will have a Pentecost prayer gathering that will gather leaders and people from area churches to seek the face of the Lord as the disci-ples did so many years ago. May Jesus Christ be praised as we seek to love and serve him in the days that he has blessed us with.
In Christ’s Service – Pastor Justin

IN MEMORIAM
A memorial plaque has been placed in the second stained glass window in the Parlor at Trinity Church Center. It is given in memory of Dr. Charles M. Hughey and appears in the window depicting Jesus as our shepherd. These two windows represent two brothers, Dr. Charles and Dr. Jim—two servants of this church, their community, and the medical profession. These are given in loving memory by Margaret Douglass Hughey.

MCDONALD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH :
YOUTH SUMMER CAMPING PROGRAM 2014
PAGE 6 MCPRESBY NEWS
Pine Springs Camp, Jennerstown Pa: www.pinesprings.org
McDonald Presbyterian Church is committed to sending all of our young people who wish to attend, to Pine Springs summer camp. Church Camp is not something that only “outdoorsy” kids do. It is something that we believe is a pow-erful, spiritual formation experience. As we participate in church ministries and programs throughout the year our time is generally broken into blocks limited only to a few hours to worship God and be with other Christians. At camp our students experience a full week of worship, study, play, and relationship building that leads to a great week of spiri-tual growth that is fun and energizing. Every student that attends from McDonald Presbyterian Church and registers by the deadline will receive a $150.00 scholarship towards the cost of camp. The price of camp reflects the very high qual-ity of program that our students receive and a very low counselor to camper ratio.
Details: MPC will be attending Pine Springs Camp Week 6: July 20-25
We have chosen a week where all of our students, who are able, will attend camp together. This week of the summer there are several traditional camps offered for students of all ages, from the completion of 3rd grade to the completion of their Senior year. Pastor Justin is serving as the Volunteer Director for a camp called Adventure Journey, July 20-25. This camp is open to all students who have completed grades 6th - 8th. Students who have finished grades 3rd- 5th will attend the Adventure Exploration Camp and students who have completed grades 9th - 12th will attend the Adventure Expedition Camp. Students who attend any of the other camps that week will see Pastor Justin at meals and other times around camp. All traditional camps run from Sunday afternoon through Friday evening and have a cost of $380.00, before our church scholarship.
MPC Registration Deadline: Pine Springs does not have a registration deadline but our church strongly en-courages families to commit to camp by Sunday, May 25th to receive the full $150 scholarship. For those students who do not complete a registration form and pay the $75.00 deposit to PSC by May 25th, the church scholarship will be reduced to $125.00.
Registration Procedure: Registration for traditional camps are something that happen directly between the Student’s parent or guardian and Pine Springs. Registration forms and initial payment should be mailed di-rectly to the camp. When this happens contact the church office and notify us of the details of your registra-tion, including what camp your child will attend. In early June a check will be sent out from our church to pay for the MPC Scholarship portion for all those students who have registered.
Other Weeks at Pine Springs: Can’t attend our week? PSC offers camps all summer long. The same scholar-ship guidelines apply for students attending from our congregation.
Additional Scholarships: We do not want finances to stop a child from attending camp. If some additional funds are needed, please contact Michelle Unruh or Pastor Justin.
Thank you for your interest in and support of Pine Springs Camp. It is a great opportunity for your children and the
thousands of campers that have attended over the years.

MAKING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR ESTATE PLANNING ~
REV. JUSTIN AMSLER
PAGE 7 MCPRESBY NEWS
One of the things that I was educated on recently is the high level of taxation that can occur when a will is executed at the end of our or a loved one’s life. Between the estate taxes that must be paid before inheritors receive anything and the taxes that the inheritors will be responsible for after receiving the property or funds, what actually makes it into the hands of our loved ones can be reduced significantly. What is also evident is that some thoughtful planning can maximize the impact of our gift after we die. Gifts to charitable organizations are tax free which maximizes the impact we can have through our es-tate. From a spiritual perspective God is interested in every aspect of our lives including the allocation of our resources after our life on earth is over.
There are three financial areas that we should keep in mind when considering what God is asking us to do with our resources. (1) The first is the most commonly considered, our regular living income. It is clear to most of us that we should “tithe” from what we have been given by God to live on. We see it as an act of faith and trust that we will be able to thrive on this earth even when we give a substantial portion away. God blesses this kind of giving as many can attest.
(2) The second area is our savings. When we have been able to save some of what God has given us, from time to time it is appropriate to take a portion of those resources and invest them in kingdom work. We should never think in a type of tax structure mindset that since we have already tithed from our income that God is not interested in any of what we have set aside. New Testament faith sees tithing as a starting point not an end point. When we are able to give more it is reward-ing and faith building to do so.
(3) The third area to consider is our end of life planning and this is the focus of this article. With so much uncertainty surrounding how much it will cost to live out our final days, it may be difficult to determine in advance how much we can faithfully give away and even if anything will remain at the time of our death. However, many people do “graduate” from this life into the next with resources that will need to be distributed. Where should they go and who should receive them? Most people that I know want to be able to leave something for their children. This is a wonderful objective and a sign of love and care for those family members whom we care so much about. We work hard our whole lives, saving and investing cautiously, our efforts should go somewhere that makes a difference.
While our gifts to our adult children will certainly be appreciated and will probably boost their quality of life, at least for a little while, a stronger gift to our adult children is to give a substantial portion of our estate to the Church of Jesus Christ. A serious estate gift to your church speaks loudly and clearly one final time what really mattered in your life. It is one last chance to communicate in a very tangible way what our focus in this life should be. The focus should not be paying off debt, providing a new car, or making possible an addition to the home of your children. These things have their place but they will pass away as we know and have seen. We believe that the Lord takes care of us and our children. What we give to Jesus and his bride the church makes an eternal difference. Estate gifts enable a church to have strength and vitality that it otherwise would not have. Estate gifts enable a church to reach the next generation with the enduring message of salvation through Jesus Christ. Whether the gift is designated for immediate use, or invested in an endowment fund on behalf of the church, it will make a real impact for the fulfillment of the great commission.
Prayerfully consider what you have done in the way of estate planning and consider adding the church as a benefici-ary. Many options are available and you will be investing in the faith of future generations. Whether or not your children are involved in the life of our congregation your actions speak louder than words when it comes to putting faith first. It is a deci-sion you will not regret in heaven!
Finally, this does not have to be a secret decision. Many times these decisions are but your decision to include the
church in your planning could serve as a testimony to encourage others to do the same. If you make a decision to support the
church in this way it might be appropriate to share the decision with your family and certain contacts in the church. Dollar
amounts or percentages might not be discussed but the action itself should be something that you are proud of and can freely
share with others. Thank you for reading and may the Lord shine his wonderful face upon you and yours!

Save the dates of July 28th through August 1st for our Vacation Bible School at Trinity Center – Weird Animals!
We will of course need lots of help and volunteers for this fun packed week of learning about Jesus!
If you are interested in helping us out, please contact Heather Weiler at [email protected] or give Heather a call at 724-926-8561.
This year’s theme Weird Animals focuses on teaching kids that God filled the world with a lot of crazy creatures...including you! When kids feel weird, different, or even lost in a crowd—nothing compares to the extraordinary love of Jesus.
Also, while you’re marking your calendar for this very important fun filled week make a note that we will worship at Trinity on Sunday, July 27th at 10:00 a.m., as a kick-off for Vacation Bible School.
