Verve/Universal release new Hot on the heels of the enormous international success of BC native Diana Krall, Verve Records is offering the new release, titled I Found Love, from Vancouver native Denzal Sinclaire, formerly known as Densil Pinnock.

The album, recorded in Vancouver, is an all-Canadian production, featuring three original tracks written by Sinclaire and longtime collaborator Bill Coon. The songs highlight Sinclaire's strong tenor vocals and Coon's arrangements.

According to Mark Miller of The Globe And Mail, "He is a smooth, dry tenor that positively shines on the long notes. When he trifles with a song, he does so gently...he might steal a few liberties putting his excellent timing and innotation to the test and elongating a melody in a way that brings new emphasis to a lyric."

Other than the three Sinclaire/Coon originals, the album will also feature a mixture of jazz and pop standards from the likes of Roberta Flack, Burt Bacharach and The Beatles.

"Denzal's performance on this album has truly confirmed his reputation as an exceptional jazz

Bessie Markouzis to Loggerhead promotions Andrew McCain, president of Loggerhead Records, has announced the appointment of Bessie Markouzis to the position of national promotions manager. Markouzis joins Loggerhead from True North..

"We are thrilled to have Bessie as part of our team," noted McCain. "We are confident in her skills and are looking forward to the results."

In other moves at Loggerhead, Lori Chappell moves over to national sales and marketing; Juliet Suddaby has been appointed to the position of business affairs manager and Jodi Sylvester is upped to marketing assistant.

Loggerhead's roster of artists includes Ashley MacIsaac, the Carson Downey Band, See Spot Run, the Punters, Denise Murray and Wayne Nicholson.

Denial Sinclaire album vocalist-pianist," notes Ken Druker, label manager for Verve.

Sinclaire is a graduate of McGill University, obtaining a Bachelor of Music Degree in jazz performance. Having performed at various festivals throughout Europe and North America, Sinclaire has performed with the likes of Jimmy Heath, Richard Wyans and Campbell Ryga. In April of this year he portrayed Nat King Cole in the acclaimed musical

tribute Unforgettable. As Densil Pinnock, he released two previous

albums, I Waited For You and Mona Lisa, appeared in numerous stage productions and starred in his own Bravo! television special. He also received the Jazz Report male jazz vocalist award three years running (1994-97).

I Found Love was released to retail on May 23. Sinclair is slated to perform at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre (June 27) and the Montreal International Jazz Festival (July 6).

Bob Roper is the former tour manager with Supertramp and A&R executive who previously helmed the solo career of Larry Gowan.

Universal, Canoe and Sun team for Top 20 songs Universal Music Canada, Canoe.ca and Sun Publishing are joining forces to determine the top 20 Canadian rock songs of all time, in a vote to be determined by the public.

Beginning this past Sunday (June 4), music fans could find ballots either by logging on to Canoe.ca or by checking out the daily Sun newspaper in Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton. The ballot features a master list of 100 Canadian rock songs from the past 30 years. Voters can choose their top 20 from that list, or write in their own if it isn't on the master.

The voting period will end on Canada Day (July 1), at which time the final list of 20 tunes will be compiled. That list of 20 will then appear on a single CD (subject to rights approval/clearance) to be released in the fall, with partial proceeds going to the Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund.

Fans who vote will be eligible for various prize packages, including entire catalogues of all 20 artists chosen for the compilation.

rvith Elvira Capreese

I sh ud have known!!! Well! EC stands corrected. I guess we should have said "the record business". AG took the time to correct us. Funny how you forget things and people after you don't hear from them for a long time. (EC: Send them a rate sheet!!!)

Lew has heart!!! What a pleasant surprise this past weekend to hear Tom Fulton on-air at CFRB in Toronto. He was filling in for John Donabie, another seasoned on-air personality who holds down the morning slot for weekends on `RB. Fulton spread his wings early in his career from his home in Quesnel, BC, I think it was sometime in the late '60s, and he landed in Toronto where he became very popular at CKFH. You know what they say ... "old DJs ..." I'm sure you know the rest. Come to think of it, there are more than a few great voices out there who were put out to pasture too soon. Most of them have probably put their egos to rest and would just like another kick at the mike. (EC: Is Lew the only broadcaster with heart???)

The grass is greener!!! Just got wind of a veteran programmer who was lucky to get that early signal to shift down and spend more time with his family. Although he was turned off at the time he got the gate, he's happy now that it happened. He has become even more recognized on both sides of the border and he's having fun with his nine and 12-year old kids. And he still has his finger on the pulse of things. If you happen to be up Leddington, Michigan way, there's a small town station there with the ingenious call letters of WMOM. The station is a hybrid between Top 30 and alternative, a format that would work in urban-blighted Toronto. There's a Cancon connection at the station with Stone Jones (aka WC) doing the news. (EC: Urban-blighted Toronto???)

Remember Roy Hennessy??? He was once the kingpin of Vancouver radio not to mention, the centre fold of McLean's Magazine, a local monthly ... I think that's the spelling ... and we ran the whole fold thing in RPM. Anyway, Mr. Hennessy, as he's now addressed, is the president of MediaNet Communications, a Toronto-based full service with a list of services three pages long, who recently signed a deal with webradio.com. You can catch up to Mr. Hennessy's career through a very informative piece in the National Post by Peter Kuitenbrouwer,

dated May 29, and it looks like he is moving onto online in a big way and servicing a bunch of radio stations to boot (EC: You know what they say, old radio programmers never fade away, or something like that!!!)

Remember back when??? I remember it well ... when keenly competitive, bushy-tailed aggressive program directors, or as they're called today, operations managers, used to hunt high and low across both Canada and the US in search of, of all people, morning personalities. You know what they say, as the morning show goes, so goes the rest of the day, with a few exceptions of course. I'm reminded that one of those programming geniuses, JRW, outfitted a kid with a car and expensive tape recorder and sent him as far west as Saskatoon, as far east as Boston and St. John's and down as far as Nashville. His job was to tape the morning shows at various stations along the way. Out of a couple hundred samplings, they picked up only a few big voices. But it gave the kid doing the taping, an idea of what radio was all about. I wonder where he is now? (EC: Probably one of those great voices who was put out to pasture!!!)

Dirty pool... or what??? That online gossip sheet zeros in on the president of a Canadian independent label... and it isn't too complimentary. Sounds like sour grapes from someone who was privy to the sanctum sanctorum of the operation. What's that old expression ... "sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me" ... or something like that. Both AMs will survive ... with or without each other. (EC: Ambiguous ... but I get it!!!)

Some real gossip!!! That same gossip sheet is predicting a very popular diva from a major label is about to ride off into the sunset, probably because of a very lucrative offer. TM is a little worried about the skeletons she might reveal that are still in his closet. (EC: Not another industry exposé???)

A corporate structural fault??? Things are getting a little testy in New York and abroad over the latest coup by CD. Apparently the millions paid him to go away wasn't enough. They've wooed him with a few more million to come back and do it again, with another label. Is SZ on the hot seat ... or what??? (EC: You tell us!!!)

The official word??? All we got was FIFO ... and that four letter word is too violent to repeat (EC: In this column???) so we'll still wait to hear the official word. We did hear about the hole in the deep pockets ... something like $1.8 million, some of which is buried in that tits-up operation that was supplying a video chain that pulled out of music. So can you blame AG for turning nasty? He's never lost before. At least with all his experience he should have the savvy to belly up to the public trough. If he hasn't, he has an expert on side who will show him how. (EC: You won't get the official word now!!!)

As the morning goes!!! It'll take more than a crowbar and all the CRTC's kings, queens, bishops, rooks and pawns to dump humpty-dumpty Howard Stem from Canadian airwaves. (EC: You got the inside???) The guy just gets worse and worse and worse, which parlays into more and more and more radio listeners. Don't have the exact cumes from the recent Toronto book, but Q's share in the morning must be through the roof, and maybe even more since that million buck US giveaway to one of those Toronto (Grimsby) listeners. The on-air trivia contest was sponsored by Jackpot.com, an online casino ... and Stern gave away the bundle, on-air, and don't think that wasn't blanketed by the print media. (EC: A million US bucks? How much was he left with after taxes???)

Raff i's got guts!!! One clown out... another clown in. No sooner had children's entertainer Raffi told promoters that he was out because a major corporate sponsor of the Vancouver Children's Festival was displaying product throughout the site, then in steps Fred Penner. Now, who's right? The major sponsor was Kia Motors (EC: Maybe they don't have kid's seats!!!)

Trouble for a big box??? They came in with a bang and went head to toe with a couple of other big boxers and tried to cover not only the book industry, but the record business. Early signs would seem to indicate they bit off more than they could chew. After squeezing out all the moms and pops and quality service operations, like the Book Cellar, Britnells and even Lichtman's, they suddenly came face to face with too much competition. Something has to give. (EC: Like whatshisface says "the times they are achangin"!!!)

This and that!!! (EC: What's this?) GD is getting boring, too political and lonely since he lost DT or TW!!! The Sun don't shine anymore!///Search the Globe for more celebrity news and photos. It is the new millennium, and tradition is one thing ... but obsolecence is hard to spell!///Crap TV! New phrase that means the lowest form of Cancon just to squeek by. A licence to expand and expand and expand!! \ \ \Behind the scenes on the way to the BCAs. May be a good story for next week's edition or save it for the book!///Yes I did! No I didn't! Yes I would if the offer had come from another paper! If it does, I will! (EC: We'll miss you!!!) How does Elvira Says grab you? (EC: A star is born!!!)

Chanelle Dupre: Making Her Move towards success by Ron Rogers

Trying to make it as an independent artist today is tough enough, but trying to do it in the dance/pop field, and out of Vancouver, makes the task doubly difficult.

But Chanelle Dupre seems undaunted by the mountainous task in front of her. Filled with the kind of unbridled exhuberance that's necessary to make it in the rock and roll business, Dupre is also armed with a host of talent, not to mention a fair degree of business savvy.

A lot of that confidence comes from her training. Dupre began studying dance when she was still a toddler, and shortly thereafter turned her attention to music. She started with piano lessons at age eight, eventually completing the Royal Conservatory of Music's program in both piano and voice. Not content with just the piano and voice training, she's also accomplished on the guitar, bass, percussion and violin.

But, while she certainly has the talent and training to perform in the classical field, Dupre actually shies away from the genre, feeling that the strict, regimented classical world would hinder her own creativity.

"I just find that performing classical music involves way too many restrictions, and it restricts your creativity. I've done my years and years of reading and exams and theory, and I just felt I'd had enough of that, and I needed to go in a different direction, because it hinders you creatively. But I found that it was a very difficult transition between performing music that was given to you, and creating it. "

Dupre released her debut self-titled CD in 1999, an album containing 10 of her own compositions. The lead single from the album, Always On My Mind, wound up placing first in the CDIS national songwriting competition, and garnered the artist a '99 West Coast Music Award for best urban/hip-hop release. Ultimately, the song reached the playlists of several stations across the country, while the dance clubs picked up on it and two other songs from the album — Run To Me and Something Over Me.

The emerging interest from radio, and the recognition via the West Coast Music Awards, Dupre feels she's ready to take her musical career to the next level. The only problem standing in her way may be her location. Vancouver is a proven rock town, but when it comes to dance or pop music, the interest just isn't there.

Toronto is obviously the place where Dupre's music would work best, but knowing that and being able to do something about it are two entirely different things. While Dupre would love to set up the usual array of promotional stops and

performances in the Toronto area, the sheer financial burden of getting there is a significant stumbling block.

"Dance music is happening in Toronto, and I do have a lot of opportunities over in Toronto to perform, but it does cost money to get out there. And that's really the only challenge, the fact that my genre of music is better received out east, but it costs you a lot of money to get down there."

Dupre admits to still being something of a novice when it comes to the dog-eat-dog world that is the music business. She is still occasionally set back at the difficulties inherent in trying to promote herself and her music —just trying to get her name out there.

Of course, the fact that she's doing most of the promotional work herself makes her job that much tougher. But in some ways, it's also refreshing to hear an artist so determined and so focused on success, and willing to make her own calls to the media for coverage.

And the fact that she has a substantial group of people backing her up, including a host of corporate sponsors, makes her struggle just a tad easier.

"If I didn't have the support of the people I have backing me right now, it'd be really difficult. It's a struggle out there, because you don't make the money initially. I mean, my own dancers are putting their own money in to travel - that's how badly they want this thing to work. But I'm so lucky that I have corporate sponsors who pay for things like instruments, clothes for whatever appearances I have. So it's not really a money situation for me, I think it's more a case of I've proven my drive and passion for it, and they've decided to come on board because it's rewarding for them.

"I think every independent artist just tries to keep their head above water, and it's difficult, for sure, because you have to juggle a full-time job at the same time, and then I'm doing my own radio tracking, publicity, everything. So it's definitely a challenge."

Her debut album was a challenge in itself. Although she'd completed a series of demos for her

songs, it was sometime before she received the appropriate funding from FACTOR to actually head into the studio to record the album.

Once that funding arrived, she brought in respected rock producer Dale Penner (Matthew Good, Econoline Crush) to handle the production chores. The choice of Penner might seem an odd one, given the nature of her material, but Dupre felt that using Penner would help to differentiate her music from the rest of the pop/dance field.

The recording process was an exhausting one, however. The nature of the FACTOR funding requires the artist to work as quickly as possible, in order to cut down on the studio time. As a result, the entire album was recorded in less than a week, with Dupre spending hour after hour each day recording all the vocal tracks. Thankfully, Penner was a patient producer, and was able to handle Dupre's penchance for perfection.

"Dale was great, he's a very pleasant guy to work with, and he works well under stress, which is good, because I'm a very demanding person. But I knew what I wanted, and it was a matter of trying to make it fit within the budget. When you have FACTOR funding, and it's your main source of financing, it's actually quite difficult, because you're pressed for time, and you're pressed for money as well. But FACTOR is a great organization, they've funded all of my demos, so they've really helped."

With her album topping Vancouver's local indic charts, and her songs popping up on radio throughout the country, Dupre took advantage of her newfound notoriety to help out some worthy causes. In addition to working for the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada, Dupre has also helped organize fundraising events for the Canadian Cancer Society and the BC Children's Hospital.

Most recently, she helped arrange a fundraiser at the Purple Onion Cabaret in Vancouver, featuring herself and other local female artists, with the proceeds going to set up a scholarship fund to help local young women trying to start out on a musical career.

And she's also busy with other projects, including a film proposal which will take her to LA sometime in the next few weeks. At some point after that, she'd like to get to Toronto ta perform some press and promotion, provided the price is right.

Meanwhile, her work has captured the attention of at least a couple of major labels from south of the border. And while she had nothing to announce just yet, Dupre is hopeful that something will come out of the talks.

"I obviously can't say anything at this point, but there are a couple of labels who are looking into everything, and there's one who's in communication with me almost every day. So we'll see what happens."

Back to Hamilton for 2001 Juno Awards In a joint statement from CARAS president Daisy Falle and CBC executive director of A&E programming Deborah Bernstein, it was announced that the Juno Awards will move back to Hamilton next year for its 30th anniversary awards presentation.

Falle points out that "Copps Coliseum and the people of Hamilton have been incredibly supportive of our show, having hosted it four times over the past six years. They helped us move the show up a notch in 1995 when we held our first ever large arena show at Copps, so it seems only fitting for them to share with us in this special year of the Junos."

"CBC Television is committed to the development of Canadian talent," says Bernstein. "and our partnership with CARAS ensures that the entire country can share in celebrating some of the world's greatest musicians. Over the last few years, the awards show has increased the number of musical acts and garnered a more youthful audience. The 30th anniversary show promises to be the most exciting Juno Awards ever."

The awards presentation will be televised live on CBC Television on March 4, beginning at 8 pm (local time), 9 pm (AT) and 9:30 pm (NF).

Chad Brock hits #1, as predicted, with Yes, his most recent single release. Written by Brock, Stephony Smith and Jim Collins, the single is the title track from his Warner Bros CD, produced by Norro Wilson and Buddy Cannon (RPM New Releases). The buzz is still very strong over Brock's performing the duet of No One with Shirley Myers, a song Myers wrote with Rod Nicholson, who comes from Myers home province of New Brunswick. The track is to be included On Warner Bros' upcoming release of New Country 7. Brock is trying the song out on his audience on his current tour, using his fiddle player for Myers' part.

John Gracie, nominated for a Big Country Award as Outstanding New Male Vocalist, is no stranger to the awards business. He has won three East Coast Music Awards as Male Artist of the Year and is ready to set out across Canada on his Summer Tour 2000. After making an appearance at the Big Country Awards on June 9, he returns home to Halifax for a Metro Centre (Convention) on June 11, followed the next day by the Halifax Metro Centre's Play With The Stars Golf Tournament, and then he's off to Edmonton for the 2nd Annual Global Country Celebrity Golf Tournament and All Star Concert (19-20), the Soundwaves Waterfront Festival in Ottawa (July 1), the Pictou Lobster Carnival (6), Tim

COUNTRY Horton's Green Door Celebrity Golf Tournament in Cheticamp, Nova Scotia (7-8). Gracie's new CD, which will ship shortly, is titled John Gracie Live - Off the Floor and Close To The Ground.

Jo Dee Messina has a hot new release. That's The Way, written by Annie Roboff and Holly Lamar, is the biggest jumper this week, moving up to #47 from #78 after two weeks. The new single is the follow-up to Because You Love Me, which enjoyed a run of 30 weeks on the RPM Country 100.

Billy Gilman has been turning heads in country music. The 12-year old youngster from Hope Valley (Providence) Road Island has an out-of-the-box hit with One Voice, the title track from his upcoming Epic debut, which enters the chart at #69. Interesting too is that he is the youngest solo artist to debut on the American trades, and certainly the youngest in 35 years to debut on the RPM Country 100. The song was written by David Malloy and Don Cook, who also produced the album with Blake Chancey. The song, which is about gun violence among the young, has also caused some controversy with those who follow the National Rifle Association's edict.

Lace, contrary to rumours, are still active and will soon be on release with a new single titled Truc Love. The song was written by Lace member Beverley Mahood and Mark Dineen. This is the follow-up to Kiss 'ern All, now descending the chart after 20 weeks (#54). The trio was nominated for a Big Country Award this year as Outstanding New Group. Although Giselle and newcomer Stacey Lee won't be attending the awards show, Mahood will be. She won a Big Country Award in 1998 as Outstanding New Female Artist, and this year, besides as a member of Lace, has been nominated with Jamie Warren in the Outstanding New Group or Duo category.

He happened by chance to hook up with CBC Radio in Tumbler Ridge where they were broadcasting for the first time. Steele met the "infamous" Mark Harvey and the very next day Harvey played Steele's River Song and talked about the career of the Dawson Creek native. Steele has had meetings with PDs and MDs in his hometown and in Ft. St. John

OUTSTANDING NEW FEMALE VOCALIST CONTENDERS

TARA LYN HART

DIANE CHASE The youngest in a family of 10 children, this Sudbury native began singing at the age of five, and was already touring Ontario and Quebec as a teenager as the lead singer in the band Flirt. However, Chase realized that, if she was going to make it in the music business, she had to relocate to Toronto. But before she made the move, she helped recruit a new lead singer for Flirt, someone named Eileen Twain. Once in Toronto, Chase earned her securities license and began working as an investment banker by day, while searching for a means into the music business. Her search led her to Cedar Tree Studios in Kitchener, home to one of Canada's leading country producers, Rick Hutt. Working alongside fellow country artists Beverley Mahood and Oiselle (both from Lace), Chase released a CD single, In The Middle Of Something, which hit the top ten on the country charts. The video for the song, meanwhile, landed on CMT's Top 20 Countdown. Chase's second single, Walking Away With You, also scored well on the charts, and the accompanying video, shot in Cuba, also gained substantial airtime on CMT. Diane Chase is nominated for outstanding new female vocalist at this year's Big Country Awards.

Growing up on a farm in Roblin, Manitoba, Tara Lyn Hart heard her first music while riding in her father's tractor on their farm. "Out where we lived," the singer notes, "there were only three radio stations that we could pick up: one was an oldies station and the other two were country. In fact, until I was 12, I didn't realize that any other kind of recorded music existed." Like most other musical hopefuls, Hart was singing in front of family and friends while still a toddler, and whenever company came by, her parents would bring her out to sing. It wasn't long before Hart's powerful voice was earning her invites to perform at local functions in and around the farming community. Hart started getting out-of-town bookings while still in the sixth grade, and was forced to make up her schoolwork on the road. Eventually, the grind of the road led her parents to opt for homeschooling. When Hart was 17 she won a local talent contest and earned a chance to record a pair of songs for national distribution. The producer she wound up working with was also working with an act already signed to Sony Music Canada. The connection paid off for Hart, who was signed to Sony shortly thereafter. The list of producers who worked with Hart on her Sony debut is impressive: Walter Afanasieff, Peter Asher, Barry Beckett, Dan Huff, Josh Leo and Tom Shapiro. The album has produced a trio of hit singles — including That's When You Came Along, Save Me, and the current hit, I Will Be Loving You (#27 — RPM Country 100 — June 5/00). Tara Lyn Hart is nominated for outstanding new female vocalist at the 2000 Big Country Awards.

JENNIFER JOHNSTON Born and raised in Renfrew, Ontario (outside of Ottawa), this twenty-something artist still calls the Ottawa Valley home. Johnston's self-titled debut was co-produced by country veteran Randall Prescott, along with Johnston's cousin and former country artist Dan Paul Rodgers. Since the 1999 release of the album, Johnston has had four singles reach the chart, including her biggest hit to date, Trouble Is A Woman. She has also had a pair of videos receive regular airplay on CMT. At the moment, Johnston is in negotiations with an American label to have her record released in the US. In the near future, Johnston will undertake a tour of Canadian Armed Forces bases in Italy, and will have a featured spot at Agrifest 2000 in Cayuga, Ontario on August 6'h, which features headliners Travis Tritt, Lonestar, Stompin' Tom Connors and Lee-Ann Womack. Johnston is nominated for outstanding new female vocalist at the 2000 Big Country Awards.

AMANDA LEE

SHIRLEY LANGE This Calgary-based singer first came to musical prominence in the mid-eighties, fronting the Toronto pop-rock outfit Headlines. The artist toured throughout Canada, the US and Japan, and also recently showcased at Nashville's famed Blue Bird Café. Lange seemed like a natural for today's new country sound, and she took that sound into the studio, resulting in the 1999 release This Time. Produced by husband/musician John Thiel at Calgary's Sundae Sound, the album features a who's who of Canadian session players, including bassist Phil Hall, keyboardist Keith Floen, drummer Jerry Adolphe, and Thiel himself on guitar. The album's lead single, The One You Used To Love, was accompanied by a video directed by Robert Cuffley (who previously won the CCMA for best video for Jason McCoy's Born Again In Dixieland). Lange herself wrote or co-wrote nine of the ten tracks on the album, displaying her developing songwriting skills. Hoping to use the 2000 Big Country Awards as the launching pad for the next phase in her career, Shirley Lange is nominated for outstanding new female vocalist.

"I like my music to represent simplicity and get my message out clearly," says this Calgary native, who first took to the stage at three years of age to sing alongside Canadian country hall of famer Ronnie Prophet. Still just twenty years old, Lee is just a couple of years removed from Brock High School in Cannington, Ontario, where the naturally ambitious teen was an OAC honour grad. Her singing talents have been recognized with a number of honours. She placed in the top three at the Canadian Open Country Music Contest, and at the Canadian National Exhibition singing contest, both in 1997. And in 1998 came the release of her first single, Yes Words, followed just a few months later by her second single, I'd Love To See You Try. 1999 saw a showcase at the Canadian Country Music Awards in Ottawa, as well as appearances at the Canadian National Exhibition and the Markham Fair. Lee also showcased last year at the annual meeting of the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions in Banff. For the year 2000, Lee can plan on performances at the Calgary Stampede, and the Merritt Mountain Music Festival. And she can add to her list of accomplishments a 2000 Big Country nomination for outstanding new female vocalist.

OUTSTANDING NEW MALE VOCALIST NOMINEES

CHAD KLINGER

JIM CUDDY It was back in the mid-seventies, while the pair was still in high school, that Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor first formed a band called the HiFi's. After attempting (and failing) to land a

4F recording deal in New York, the duo returned to Toronto to a growing club scene, that was an ideal launching pad for their countryfied rock. After several chance meetings and classified ads, Blue Rodeo was born. In the many years since, Blue Rodeo has become one of Canada's most popular recording and touring acts, with close to a dozen records to their credit, and sales in Canada of more than two million units. It was during the rare breaks in Blue Rodeo's touring and recording schedule that Cuddy wrote and recorded the tracks for his debut solo release, All In Time. Joining Cuddy on the record were a core band that included drummer Gavin Brown, guitarist and vocalist Colin Cripps and regular Blue Rodeo bassist Bazil Donovan. And without a time schedule pushing him, Cuddy was able to incorporate a number of friends on the album, including violinist Melanie Doane, regular Blue Rodeo keyboardist James Gray, singers Michelle McAdorey (Crash Vegas) and Sarah Harmer (Weeping Tile), and Wilco's Jay Bennett and Jeff Tweedy. The resulting 11 tracks became one of the Canadian country scene's most popular records in 1999, and have garnered the Blue Rodeo 'veteran' Cuddy a 2000 Big Country nomination for outstanding new male vocalist.

JOHN GRACIE This Glace Bay, Nova Scotia native began taking singing lessons at age six, and music has been his life ever since. Gracie's first album, Thinkin"Bout Midnight, reached gold status in Canada and earned the singer two consecutive East Coast Music Awards male artist titles. Gracie restored the music of one of this country's most respected songwriters with his release John Gracie — A Gene MacLellan Tribute, which was distributed in Canada by EMI. Three more albums came after that, including a Christmas album which sold well in eastern Canada. In 1999 Gracie released his latest album, Identity, which was a turn back towards mainstream country. The album produced four singles that reached the top 40 on the RPM Country 100 chart, and sparked an international tour, which included dates on Tom Jackson's Huron Carol. Gracie earned a third consecutive ECMA artist of the year award in '99, but chose to boycott the awards after a planned tribute to Hank Snow was cancelled. Gracie has made countless TV and radio appearances, including spots on Gabereau, Momingside, Today's Country, Midday, Country Beat, and Inside Country, and he co-hosted a Christmas special with Shirley Eilchard on the US Fox Network. Currently in the works is a soon-to-be-released live album, Off The Floor And Close To The Ground, as well as three other studio releases. Gracie is honoured this year with an outstanding new male vocalist nomination at the 2000 Big Country Awards.

This 21 year-old native of Lashburn, Saskatchewan made his first public performance at the age of 16, when he sang at his sister's wedding. The thrill of that performance gave Klinger the performing bug, and he's been carving out his place in the country field ever since. Klinger didn't pick up the guitar until he was 19, and quickly taught himself to play, and began writing his own songs. As fate would have it, Klinger's dreams of a career in music began with a chance encounter with country hitmakers Lonestar. Following the group's July '98 show in Edmonton, Klinger's manager, Chris Scheetz, encountered the group in the parking lot and asked if they might listen to a couple of Klinger's songs. Lonestar's Dean Sams was so impressed that he invited Klinger down to Nashville to record. The resulting first single from that Nashville recording session, Who Needs The Moon, was an instant chart success, finishing at #88 on RPM's 1999 Year-End Country chart. The second single Klinger released, Bring It On, was another top 20 hit on the country charts. At the moment, Klinger is writing more songs to finish his upcoming new album, and he continues to perform throughout western Canada. Klinger was also recently named Saskatchewan country male vocalist of the year. For the 2000 Big Country Awards, Chad Klinger has been nominated as outstanding new male vocalist.

JOHN LANDRY "If it moves you, then it's music, regardless of it's melodic style." That's according to eastern Quebec native John Landry, who's own CD collection reflects such diverse tastes, ranging from Mozart to Elton John. Landry's first performance took place in front of his grandmother when he was just four years old, and she recorded his version of Charlie Pride's Snakes Crawl At Night on an old tape recorder. Although Landry went to school to become a flight medic, he held on to his dreams of making music his career. When Landry wrote a song for a friend dealing with some tough times, he was amazed at the affect the song had, and realized that music was where his future lay. Landry's debut CD, Forever Took Too Long, came about after he performed at a fundraiser alongside Julian Austin and Jamie Warren. The latter introduced Landry to noted producer J. Richard Hutt, and the album Forever Took Too Long was born. The record produced several charted singles, including Bit By Bit, which hit #53 on the RPM Top 100 Country chart of 1999, and There You Were, which reached #87 on the same chart. The third single, Long Gone And Forgotten, was another top 20 hit for Landry. The hard work has earned Landry a 2000 Big Country nomination as outstanding new male vocalist.

KEVIN WAARA This native of Thunder Bay penned his first song at the age of fifteen, and prodded on by his close friends, began performing and recording the songs. Waara started recording as far back as 1972, and it was at this time that he met veteran Canadian country producer Don Grashey. The two began a musical partnership which lasted more than a decade, and produced a number of recordings. One of Waara's first recordings, Sweet Lorene, was well received by critics both north and south of the border. But success came slowly — another recording, a single featuring a pair of Elvis songs, sold a whopping 311 copies. Waara performed with a host of bands throughout the '70s and '80s, including Apollo, Wheatstone-Bridge, Rockslide, The Reflections, The Marbles, The Colts, Coldshot, The Keys, and most recently, Kevin & The Hi-Fives. In 1980, Waara released the album Breakthrough, which resulted in four charted singles in RPM, including A Dream And A Fool, which hit the top ten and remained there for six weeks. The success of that recording led to a 1981 CCMA nomination for top male artist. Waara's latest recording, Horseplay, produced a couple of charted singles, Texas Two Step and There Ain't A Minute That Goes By, both of which have helped to earn Waara a 2000 Big Country nomination

for outstanding new male vocalist.

LACE

OUTSTANDING NEW GROUP OR DUO

The original Lace trio of Beverley Mahood, Giselle and Corbi Dyann was the brainchild of veteran Canadian producer David Foster, who saw a void in the country field for such an act, and signed the trio to his own 143 Records label. Leading the way for the group is Kitchener native Mahood, who's already earned considerable success with her debut solo record, Girl Out Of The Ordinary. That album produced several radio singles, including hits in the title track, A Little Thing Called Love and The Way A Woman Feels. But it was during the 1997 CCMA Awards that Foster got in touch with Mahood, looking to include her in a new female trio he was forming. Shortly after signing with Foster, there was several days of auditioning before Mahood tipped Foster off to a friend of hers, fellow Kitchener native Giselle. Finding the third voice was a tad more difficult, but after listening to several audition tapes, the group decided on Texan Corbi Dyann, who flew up to Canada to meet with the other two. The trio hit it off immediately, and a new group was born. The album featured the legendary production touch of Foster, along with fellow producing giants Chris Farren, Humberto Gatica and Rick Hutt. The radio response was immediate, with the lead single, I Want A Man, peaking at #13 on the RPM Country 100 chart. The followup single, Kiss 'Ern All, did even better, soaring to #6 on the charts. Recently, Corbi Dyann parted ways with the group, and was replaced by newcomer Stacey Lee. Following up their 2000 Juno nomination for top country group or duo, Lace have now been nominated for outstanding new group or duo at the 2000 Big Country Awards.

BEVERLEY MAHOOD & JAMIE WARREN Born in Northern Ireland, and raised in the Kitchener/Waterloo area, Beverley Mahood's debut release, appropriately titled Girl Out Of The Ordinary, was released in 1997. Featuring 10 songs co-written by Mahood, the album was produced by veteran Canadian producer J. Richard Hutt, who helped craft Mahood's career since she was a teenager. The lead single from the album, the title track, reached the top ten on the Canadian country charts, followed shortly thereafter by another top ten single, A Little Thing Called Love. Mahood's career received a huge shot in the arm in 1999 when David Foster recruited her for a new all-female country trio dubbed Lace. The group's debut single, I Want A Man, became one of the biggest Canadian country songs of 1999 (#60 on the RPM Year-End country chart), and established Lace as one of the hottest young country acts in Canada. While Mahood is still a relative newcomer to the game, country veteran Jamie Warren has been writing and recording country hits since the early '80s. Warren first hit the country charts back in 1985 with Take Me Home Mississippi, which peaked at #10 on the RPM Country 100 chart. The song also garnered Warren an outstanding new artist award at the 1985 Big Country Awards. Although Warren went into semi-retirement during the early nineties, he re-emerged in 1996 with

the album Fallen Angel. The album spawned several top twenty singles, including the song The Secret, about an abusive relationship, which inspired Warren to form the Warren Foundation for Victims Of Abuse. That album was eventually picked up by Mercury/Polydor in the US for an American release. His 1998 release, Just Not The Same, produced another immediate hit in Cried All The Way Home, and earned Warren a trio of 1999 CCMA nominations, including top male artist. For the 2000 Big Country Awards, Beverley Mahood and Jamie Warren have been nominated in the top group or duo category for their hit I Love How You Listen To Me.

SHIRLEY MYERS & DUANE STEELE Born and raised in New Brunswick, Shirley Myers was already on stage by the time she was four years old, singing alongside her sister. It didn't hurt that her father, Gerry Myers, was a well-known country artist in the Maritimes, and star of the Bunkhouse Boys TV show in the '50s and '60s. Accomplished on both the guitar and drums, Myers got her first break when she won the $10,000 first prize at the 1988 CCMA Talent Search. Myers eventually teamed up with fellow Maritimer Peter Leggett and his Nashville-based management firm, and Leggett used his Nashville clout to secure opening slots for the likes of George Jones, Terri Clark and John Michael Montgomery. Her first album produced a hit in the title track, Let It Rain, which also earned the singer a '97 Juno nomination. Myers' second album on the Stony Plain label, There Will Come A Day, which earned Myers a 1999 CCMA nod for the Wrangler Rising Star Award. For Alberta native Duane Steele, his career in the Canadian country field has been long in the making. Steele first made noise in his native province with the band Northern Sunrise, which played at parties and festivals throughout the province. Later came another band, Waterhole, formed

with his longtime friend Dave Milner. He and Milner teamed up again with Rock 'N Horse, a group that produced several top 20 singles, and earned a Juno nomination as country group of the year. However, the band never did get the big break they needed, and called it quits after eight years together. In 1996, Steele signed a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell and moved to Nashville. His first solo record, PO Box 423, was released by Mercury/Polydor in early '96, and produced three top 10 hits, including his first #1 song, Anita Got Married. The following year, Steele won the CCMA award for top vocal collaboration for the duet, Two Name On An Overpass, with Lisa Brokop. Steele's 1997 album, This Is The Life, produced seven top 30 singles. In early 1999, Steele wrote and recorded Forever In Love with Shirley Myers. That song has garnered the pair a 2000 Big Country nod for outstanding new duo or group.

QUARTETTE It might seem strange to see this foursome in the 'new' group or duo category, given the impressive track record of the four ladies involved. Sylvia Tyson, of course, is renowned as the other half of the acclaimed '60s duo Ian & Sylvia, who's country/folk sound was the inspiration for countless artists that followed. While Ian & Sylvia parted ways in the early '70s, Sylvia Tyson went on to carve an impressive solo career, releasing several solo albums, including the most recent, Gypsy Cadillac, via Sony Music Canada. She was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1992. Nova Scotia native Cindy Church first came to prominence as a member of Ian Tyson's backing band, The Chinook Arch Riders. Later, she and guitarist Nathan Tinlcham helped form the Great Western Orchestra, who released a self-titled album in 1989. Church went on to release three solo albums with Stony Plain, the most recent being her 1996 self-titled release. Caitlin Hanford first gained attention through her writing and recording collaborations with husband Chris Whiteley, a partnership that garnered the pair a best country group nomination at the '84 Junos. In 1989, Hanford created a three-part CBC radio series on the history of women in country, dubbed Honky Tonk Angels. Hanford's most recently released her first solo album, Bluer Skies. Finally, Winnipeg native Gwen Swick had the difficult task of replacing the late Colleen Peterson in Quartette. Swick's most recent recording, A Pebble Of Mercy, offered the song I Should Feel Empty, which appeared on the soundtrack for the film Never Talk To Strangers. Despite the impressive resumes of the four women involved, Quartette is still new to many country radio listeners, as evidenced by their 2000 Big Country nod for outstanding new group or duo.

THE SPURS This new country duo is headed up by the husband and wife team of Phil and Becky Holmes. Although Phil Holmes began the group back in Calgary, the band now makes its home in Ottawa, where they are in constant demand to perform at local fairs and festivals. Phil is the principal writer for the group, as well as the lead guitarist and vocalist. Becky Holmes was raised in Pembroke, Ontario, and grew up on the fiddle and step-dancing circuit. It is Becky's combination of strong vocals, fiddling, keyboards and step-dancing that brings an added dimension to the Spurs' live show. The Spurs first album, Black Top Fever, was released in January of 1999, and created an instant buzz on the country charts. Easy As 1-2-3 became the group's first top 20 hit, eventually peaking at #17 on the RPM 100 Country chart. The song also received extensive airplay overseas. Following the success of that single, the Spurs released their second single, Swingin' Door Of Love, which remained on the RPM Country 100 chart for 37 weeks. The group's current single is Flowers, Candy & Cash. The Spurs have been nominated for top country group or duo at this year's Big Country Awards.

C1RPA...producers form action association

by Walt Grealis Picture, if you can, 21 record producers sitting around a table in Toronto's Inn On The Park. This was the scene on December the 4th, when for the first time, this group of producers who knew very little about each other met to find out that they had a great deal in common. They all were dissatisfied with their lack of mileage in Canada from their in-vestment.

A couple of million dollars had been spent by this group in making records and with the exception of two of the producers who had hit the magic million mark, the bal-ance had not seen either anything that would resemble a profit or anything like a good chart listing.

As the meeting began, it became obvious that the very cool start would develop into something ex-traordinary. As they started to discuss their problems, the pro-ducers realized that the fight for a place in the sun for Canadian productions was going sour. The CRTC ruling which guaranteed them a competitive arena in which they could fight the foreign pro-duct was slowly being taken over by a new group of producers, the broadcast-production and music publishing houses. Their greatest adversaries over the past number of years, the broadcasters were stepping right in to take advan-tage of the regulations and make sure that anything that they were "forced" to play would turn over a profit which didn't leave their hands - at least not too often.

It became clear that as individuals they might fall, but collectively they would be able to fight for survival. They had the talent.

There was still some money, the ruling was imminent, but the pos-sibility of the airwaves being overcrowded with the product of the broadcasters' own production houses posed a threat to their very "survival."

There was no outright bitterness

on the part of any of the producers. Even where there should have been downright hate, the producers took the approach that this wasn't a fight they wanted. It was a battle they were forced into. This was no vigilante group that was out for the broadcasters' blood. It be-came clear that there were legal and ethical courses which could

be taken to "test" the fairness of the broadcasters in record pro-duction.

The situation was made very clear by one of the early speakers: "We the producers, make records and beg for airplay. They the broadcasters, have the right to re-

fuse us and play their own. This right is granted to them by the people of Canada as holders of a very valuable franchise, the use of the publicly-owned airwaves. Simply, should they be in the po-sition to be able to play their own product when they are so critical of our work and talent?"

Surprisingly, the producers knew more about the rash of broadcaster-owned record enterprises than did many of the people who control this very area. From coast-to-coast in Canada, broadcasters are gear-ing their programming operations to include record production. In

what seems to be anger at the CRTC for enforcing this form of control, the broadcasters have taken a stand that if they are going to be forced to do anything, they will make sure that it works to their advantage.

Unanimously, the producers agreed

to take steps to bring the problem to the attention of the government bodies concerned with what broadcasters are allowed to do as well as seeking other methods of making their problem known to anyone who would have difficulty understanding. Few had ever been asked what their problems were.Up until this meeting, it was felt that few would discuss their problems openly fearing boycott of their product or blacklisting. They were presently feeling the result of both from the radio people.

The Maple Leaf System was brought up for discussion, and it was agreed by all present that the System was "sudden death" to any records that didn't win in the voting. The System had flattered and impressed the record companies but the producers were ignored. They weren't considered in any of the discussions of "aiding the record industry in Canada". With each conference call the MLS had scrapped literally tens of thousands of dollars of time, talent and cul-ture as being "simply" not good enough. The question of the qualifications of the MLS members in judging the merits of produc-

tions is moot. Most of their ex-perience is in analysing trade charts and listings. Their "ear" for hits in formulated radio has never had to develop. Did they really know a hit sound when they heard one? Why were they so cri-tical of what was being done in Canada when they played any "hype" that the foreign trade sheets recommended without question?

As the meeting drew to a close, it was voted that a strong association was needed. The Association would be formed on the strength of the issues which had been discussed

and whatever recourse the broad-casters might take, the group would stand united.

In the same way as the broad-casters descended on Ottawa to fight the 30% ruling, the producers were now united to fight the broadcasters' threat to their work

in giving birth to the industry.

CIRPA was born. The Canadian Independent Record Producers' Association. They will be fighting to make the production arena for records a nice place to work in.

Strangely enough, for an observer to see and hear this whole pro-ceeding was an experience. You left surprised at their "guts", but above all, pleased that this was a group of gentlemen who had a problem they had to lick. It was frightening the way the words boycott and blacklist were being thrown around, but the producers were an inspiration as they agreed

to work together for the first time. This could be the biggest "session'

of all time and the outcome could be a "hit sound" that will be heard around the world.

They will be a group to contend with, and you couldn't help feeling that the non-broadcasting pro-ducers had one thing on their side -

an honesty of purpose. They proved it years ago, when they walked into Canada's studios with just a pipe dream of a million seller. They deserve to win and they'll do it with a license to play their own productions.

and was granted an interview with Channel 10 community TV News. Damned Old Rodeo was scheduled to hit the airwaves on June 5 and because of the Dawson Creek/Ft. St. John TV rotation was expected to be heard by upwards of 40,000 listeners. Because of Steele's aggressive promotion activity, he estimates that Damned Old Rodeo has been heard by more than 20 million people worldwide, "and I'm being conservative," he modestly admits. Through the important rotation of Steele's music video The River Song, he has become quite the hometown VIP. As a sidenote, on his way home from Ft. St. John, Steele stopped in at the Taylor Restaurant, where they have "the best ham and eggs in town," quips Steele, and where the owner is displaying and selling his CDs at the front counter.
