Bradley Kent Carter

Bradley Kent Carter, Associate Professor of Political Science in Dedman College, came to SMU in 1970. He received his A.B. from the University of Miami, his M.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Carter taught political and organizational theory in the Political Science Department. He also taught undergraduate courses in the General Education Curriculum and graduate courses in the Master of Liberal Arts and Master of Liberal Studies programs. He wrote on the political ideas of James Madison and Mary Parker Follett. Professor Carter served the Political Science Department in several roles, including undergraduate director, from 1999–2014. His service to the University included a 14-year membership on the Faculty Senate, with three terms as secretary and one as president, and 19 years as Chief Marshal of the University with responsibility for academic ceremonies. He has twice been honored as a Rotunda Outstanding Professor, twice received the Willis M. Tate Award for Distinguished Teaching and also received the “M” Award, SMU’s most prestigious honor. Douglas Bauer, a former student, established the Bauer Incentive Scholarship in Professor Carter’s honor. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Political Science.

anthony J. Cortese Anthony J. Cortese, Professor of Sociology in Dedman College, came to SMU in 1989 as director of Mexican American Studies and also served as director of Ethnic Studies. He earned a B.A. from Bellevue University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Notre Dame. Before joining the SMU faculty, he taught at Colorado State University, followed by Illinois State University. At SMU he has taught courses on race and ethnicity in the United States, social problems, minority dominant relations, media ethics and gender, and ethical perspectives on ethnoviolence. He also has taught courses at SMU-in-Taos. His honors include a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to Japan. At SMU Professor Cortese has twice been named a Teaching Fellow of the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility. His scholarship has resulted in four books, including Ethnic Ethics: The Restructuring of Moral Theory and Provocateur: Images of Women and Minorities in Advertising, now in its fourth edition. He also has written numerous articles, book chapters and reviews and frequently presents his research at both academic and nonacademic conferences. His current research focuses on brutality against women. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Sociology.

riChard haBerman Richard Haberman, Professor of Mathematics in Dedman College, earned his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After teaching at Rutgers University and Ohio State University, he joined the SMU faculty in 1978. His research has involved various areas of physical applied mathematics, including singular perturbation methods of nonlinear dynamical systems and waves, slowly varying bifurcations in differential equations and chaotic interaction of solitary waves in nonlinear optics. Professor Haberman has published three mathematics textbooks, including Applied Partial Differential Equations, currently used in 125 universities, and more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles. He served as editor-in-chief of the SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) book series on Mathematical Modeling and Computation and as associate editor for the UMAP Journal of applied mathematics. At SMU he served as director of the graduate program in mathematics for approximately 15 years and as the undergraduate program director for three years. A dedicated teacher and mentor, he taught 17 graduate courses and eight undergraduate courses,

directed six Ph.D. theses and served on numerous M.S. and Ph.D. committees. He was honored with the Betty McKnight Speairs Endowed Teaching Excellence Award in Mathematics. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Mathematics.

James K. hopKins James K. Hopkins, Professor of History in Dedman College, came to SMU in 1974. He received his B.A. from the University of Oklahoma, was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at Cambridge University and received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. At SMU he was chair of the Clements Department of History, associate dean for General Education and president of the Faculty Senate. Encouraging education beyond the campus, Professor Hopkins co-founded the Inter-Community Experience Program and was the founding director of SMU-in-Oxford. His honors include the “M” Award, SMU’s most prestigious recognition; as well as the Phi Beta Kappa Perrine Prize, several Rotunda Teaching Awards, Scholar-Teacher of the Year Award, Faculty Volunteer Award and on four occasions the Willis M. Tate Award. He was named an Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor in 2001. A longtime advisor to the President’s Scholars, he received in April the Faculty Club’s Mentor Supereminens Award. Also this spring he was named the inaugural recipient of the Second Century Faculty Career Achievement Award. His publications include two books, A Woman to Deliver Her People: Joanna Southcott and English Millenarianism in an Age of Revolution and Into the Heart of the Fire: the British in the Spanish Civil War. He retires as Professor Emeritus of History.

larry palmer Larry Palmer, Professor of Harpsichord and Organ in Meadows School of the Arts and University Organist, joined the SMU faculty in 1970 after serving on the faculties of Norfolk State University and St. Paul’s College, both in Virginia. He earned a B.M. degree from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and master’s and doctoral degrees from Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. The author of three books, including Harpsichord in America, he has contributed to numerous publications on organ and harpsichord music and has served as harpsichord editor of The Diapason magazine since 1969. Internationally known as performer, scholar and teacher, Professor Palmer has presented concerts and recitals in more than 40 states and six European countries, including premiere performances of more than 40 commissioned harpsichord, organ and choral works. Known for his stylish performances of baroque music as well as contemporary works, he is the only music professor in SMU history to give 45 consecutive annual faculty recitals. He has produced a dozen solo recordings, led workshops and master classes throughout the United States and Europe, served as judge at organ competitions and held leadership in major professional organizations. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Music.

helen laKelly hunt, Doctor of Humane LettersHelen LaKelly Hunt, who holds three degrees from SMU, is a philanthropist dedicated to promoting women’s equality and social change. She is the founder and president of The Sister Fund, which underwrites projects to empower women in social, political, economic and spiritual realms. As catalyst and head of the innovative Women Moving Millions campaign, she forges alliances with other women philanthropists who make gifts of a million dollars or more to fund large-scale women’s causes. Hunt is internationally known for co-developing the Imago Relationship Therapy techniques for saving and enhancing close relationships. She helped establish several women’s organizations, including the Women’s Funding Network, Dallas Women’s Foundation and New York Women’s Foundation. She has received numerous awards for her leadership on women’s issues and has been inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. After receiving three degrees from SMU (a B.A. in secondary education, a Master of Liberal Arts and an M.A. in counseling), she earned a Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary. Her doctoral dissertation, the basis for her book Faith and Feminism: A Holy Alliance, focused on the religious foundations of American feminism. For her contributions to the empowerment of women and her leadership in the women’s funding movement, Southern Methodist University is honored to confer upon alumna Helen LaKelly Hunt the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

irene hirano inouye, Doctor of Humane LettersIrene Hirano Inouye has served for more than 35 years in nonprofit administration, community education and public affairs with culturally diverse groups. As president of the U.S.-Japan Council since 2009, she is dedicated to strengthening relations between the two countries through people-to-people connections. She previously served for 20 years as president and founding CEO of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. The museum promotes understanding and appreciation of America’s ethnic and cultural diversity through the experience of Japanese Americans. She also was president and CEO of the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy, a museum affiliate. Earlier in her career, she served as executive director of T.H.E. (To Help Everyone) Clinic in Los Angeles, a nonprofit community health facility for low- and moderate-income women and families. Her professional activities include positions as current trustee and immediate past chair of the Ford Foundation and the Kresge Foundation. She earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public administration from the University of Southern California. For her contributions to enhanced understanding of Japanese Americans and to strengthened relations between the United States and Japan, Southern Methodist University is honored to confer upon Irene Hirano Inouye the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

meave leaKey, Doctor of Humane LettersMeave Leakey is the standard-bearer of a family of paleoanthropologists who have dominated the field since the beginning of the 20th century. Her field and laboratory research has established her as one of the most visible and distinguished scientists in a highly competitive profession. Her research interests focus on East African mammalian evolution over the past 30 million years, with emphasis on primate and human evolution. Having retired as head of the Department of Palaeontology at the National Museums of Kenya, Leakey is now a research associate in the museum’s Palaeontology Division. She also is a research professor in the Department of Anthropology at Stony Brook University in New York and director of Plio-Pleistocene research at the Turkana Basin Institute, Nairobi. In 2002 she was named a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence in honor of the 50-year relationship between

the National Geographic Society and the Leakey family. Leakey is the author of numerous scientific publications in prestigious journals and several monographs documenting her research in Turkana. She received a B.S. degree in zoology and marine zoology and a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of North Wales. For her groundbreaking research, which has enhanced the understanding of our evolutionary past, Southern Methodist University is honored to confer upon Meave Leakey the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

GeorGe W. Bush, 43rd President of the United States George W. Bush served as the 43rd President of the United States from 2001 to 2009 during a time of unprecedented challenge, accentuated by terrorist attacks on U.S. soil on September 11, 2001.

He was born on July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Connecticut, to Barbara and George H.W. Bush, who later became the 41st President of the United States. In 1948, the family moved to Texas, where George W. Bush grew up in Midland and Houston. He received a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University in 1968 and a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School in 1975. Returning to his Texas roots, he settled in Midland, where he started an energy business and married Laura Welch, an SMU alumna who now serves on SMU’s Board of Trustees. After working on his father’s successful 1988 Presidential campaign, George W. Bush led a group of partners that purchased the Texas Rangers baseball franchise.

On November 8, 1994, George W. Bush was elected the 46th Governor of Texas and became the first governor in Texas history to be elected to consecutive four-year terms.

After the presidency, George and Laura Bush founded the George W. Bush Presidential Center. Located on the SMU campus, the Center is home to the Bush Presidential Center, which includes the Museum and Library, housing his presidential papers and artifacts. The Center is also home to the George W. Bush Institute, a public policy organization that focuses on economic growth, education reform, global health, and human freedom. The Institute also includes the Women’s Initiative and the Military Service Initiative.

President Bush is the author of a bestselling memoir, Decision Points. He also recently authored a book about President George H.W. Bush, titled 41: A Portrait of My Father. He and Laura have twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna; a son-in-law, Henry Hager; a granddaughter, Mila Hager; and another granddaughter on the way.

In 1911, a Methodist education commission made a commitment to establish a major Methodist university in Texas. More than 600 acres of open prairie and $300,000 pledged by a group of Dallas citizens secured the university for Dallas, and it was chartered as Southern Methodist University. In appreciation of the city’s support, the first building to be constructed on the campus was named Dallas Hall. It remains the centerpiece and symbol of SMU. When the University opened in 1915, it consisted of two buildings, 706 students, a 35-member faculty and total assets of $636,540. The original schools of SMU were the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Theology and the School of Music.

Today SMU offers more than 118 undergraduate majors, master’s degrees in more than 130 areas, Ph.D. degrees in 33 fields and more than 45 certificate programs. Enrollment for the spring 2015 term was 10,936, including 6,169 undergraduate students and 4,767 graduate students. SMU students come from 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands and 102 countries. About 74 percent of first-year students received some form of financial assistance for spring 2015.

In addition to preparing students for graduate and professional schools, or more directly for their life’s work, the University strives to enhance their social, moral, intellectual and religious development so that they may lead worthy lives as individuals and citizens of the nation and of the world.

southern methodist university’s Custom reGalia

SMU’s regalia visually honor the University’s traditions and spirit, which we celebrate this morning.

Candidates for degrees at SMU are robed in custom regalia, designed to incorporate SMU’s colors and symbols.

The doctoral gown in dark blue includes velvet chevrons on each of the bell sleeves. The front velvet panels are embroidered in gold thread with the SMU seal, and gold braid outlines the chevrons and panels. An eight-sided, crimson red velvet tam with a gold silk tassel completes the regalia.

The master’s gown, also in dark blue, has a front yolk outlined in red braid, and the SMU seal is embroidered in red on the left side. Gowns

have a long sleeve through a slit at the wrist. A mortarboard with a colored tassel representing the discipline in which the degree is earned also is worn.

Doctoral and master’s candidates wear hoods that are 3½ feet long and 4 feet long, respectively. SMU’s hood lining is blue with red chevron.

The Bachelor’s gowns’ distinguishing characteristics are the long pointed sleeves and full front pleats. A red silk Stole of Gratitude embroidered in blue with the SMU seal is worn across the shoulders. It is tradition for graduates to present their stoles to individuals who have made a positive impact in their lives. Bachelor’s gowns are worn with a tassel and mortarboard.

The academic procession and the regalia worn by the faculty and officers of the University symbolically represent the continuing link between the modern American university and the founding of the great medieval universities in Europe – chief among them Bologna, Paris and Oxford. As those institutions were derived from the Catholic Church, the universities adopted many of the ceremonial trappings of the church in their official public functions.

The caps and gowns worn in the procession also vary from place to place. There are variations in design to indicate the degrees held by the wearers, and many universities in America have introduced colorful gowns and other distinguishing details (in place of the customary clerical black from which all originated). The caps, too, vary according to the customs of the university from which the wearer received a degree. While most American universities adopted the “mortarboard” style of Oxford, others have chosen styles based on other European institutions. The color of the tassel worn with the cap may be black for any degree, or the color

may be that of the faculty of the major field of learning (e.g., Arts, Engineering, Law). Persons holding doctoral degrees and governing officials of institutions are entitled to wear tassels of gold metallic thread.

Within the great varieties of styles and colors in gowns and caps, there has been one universally accepted code for the hood worn trailing down the wearer’s back. Originally, it was like the hood on the habit worn by monks and very useful for protection against the weather and even for begging for alms. Nowadays, the hood through length and color shows the degree and the specialization of the wearer, and the university that granted the degree.

Through these colorful ceremonies, SMU symbolically displays the continuity of its educational purposes with the origins of organized learning in the Western world.

presidential Collar and medallion

Chains of office, also known as collars, were used as badges of office in the Middle Ages. Today they are custom-designed metal necklaces worn by the president during academic ceremonies as part of his or her regalia.

The chain of office designed for the 10th president of SMU, R. Gerald Turner, is made of bronze, a strong and durable metal. The medallion of the necklace is dominated by the University seal design, just as the seal is the centerpiece in the floor of

the Rotunda in Dallas Hall, SMU’s historic first building.

The bail, joining the medallion and the chain, represents the institution’s bond between the faculty and the student body. Equally, the 32-inch chain, a work of art whose two ends are clasped together, represents the joining of the desire to teach and the eagerness to learn demonstrated by SMU’s faculty and students.

the offiCial university maCe and the hoWard lantern

The Howard Lantern is dedicated to Professor Lorn Lambier Howard, chief marshal emeritus of SMU from 1978–1987. Crafted out of steel, aluminum and water glass, the lantern depicts the Rotunda of Dallas Hall. Engraved around the base is the University’s motto, Veritas Liberabit Vos, which means “The truth will make you free.”

Around the top band are the words to “Varsity,” SMU’s alma mater. The lantern serves as a reminder of the important traditions that make up our University life and the light of learning and intellectual curiosity that shines within the students, faculty and staff at SMU.

Staffs that call groups to order are as old as civilization itself. Today’s ceremonial maces descend particularly from medieval armor-piercing clubs topped by bludgeoning balls. These fierce weapons swiftly acquired symbolic meaning. By the 14th century, a mace, carried at the front of formal processions, required bystanders to note the authority and integrity of the event. In the 16th century, this formidable weapon lost its battle utility but took a symbolic turn: the spiked head evolved into a decorative orb. The European tradition by which universities presented maces on solemn occasions to signify their independence and protective power was adopted by their successors worldwide. The mace-bearer, who is the president of the Faculty Senate, leads formal ceremonies carrying this visible reminder of the University’s history and status.

The 22-pound mace currently in use at SMU is linked to the inauguration of President Willis M. Tate (1954–1972 and 1974–75) and is known as the Tate Mace. The 57-inch staff is topped by a 10½-inch orb that represents not only the University’s worldly authority but also echoes its distinctive neoclassical style. The orb is impressed with the seal of the University and is encircled with SMU’s motto, Veritas Liberabit Vos (“The truth will make you free”). Surmounting the orb is a cross painted vividly in SMU red, a reminder of SMU’s religious heritage.
