Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This week I have been preparing a lesson for confirmaon class

called “What is Lent”. As you can probably guess we will spend our me

together discussing some of the different aspects around the Lenten

season and why we celebrate it. As I have researched and recalled why we

have Lent it has brought back many memories and details that I have forgo(en. It came to me that maybe

the confirmaon class is not the only place this informaon should be shared and so, I will share some of it

with you.

Lent is a church season in which we focus on simplicity in all parts of our lives including prayer and

everyday task. It is a me to reflect on what Christ does for you on the cross and through resurrecon.

Lent last for 40 days and begins on Ash Wednesday. Now, if you look at a calendar, you may count and not

be able to get 40. The trick is that we do not count Sundays because each Sunday is “mini Easter”, so it runs

from Ash Wednesday to the Sunday before Easter.

You may ask why 40 days? Well Christ was tempted for 40 days, Moses was on the mountain for 40

days, the Israelites wandered for 40 years so, 40 days is a popular number in the bible. So, we spend 40

days reflecng on His suffering and sacrifice.

Why ashes? In the Old Testament and in the Jewish religion we see that when someone is dealing

with their sins and are so distraught because of it they would put on sack cloth, which is extremely itchy and

pour ashes over their head. The ashes are a public sign of their repentance and recognion of their sins

against God. So, we use ashes as a recognion of our humanness and sinfulness, it is in a cross on our fore-

heads as a reminder of what Christ does for us on the Cross.

Many of you grew up in an era where you were encouraged to give up something for Lent, I did too.

This “fasng” is meant to remind us of the sacrifice Christ endures on your behalf. So, this year you may

choose to fast from chocolate, sugar, electronics, Facebook, ….. you choose what will have an impact on

you, that will be a sacrifice.

Or, instead of giving up something perhaps you will begin a new prayer roune at bedme or during

the day. Taking intenonal me to be in communicaon with God. This can be through prayer, silence, lis-

tening. Perhaps you will read through the Bible. Another idea is to perform a service for someone else, see

if you can find someone to help for the Season.

Finally, in our churches, we experience Lent through Wednesday night worships and soup suppers.

So, I invite you to join us on Ash Wednesday, March 1st

, and the Wednesdays to follow, to enter into Christ

Journey to the Cross as we look at some people who came to a crossroad and made a decision.

May your Lent be filled with reflecon and growth.

Pastor Rick

The Parish Council met for the first time on Sunday evening February 26th at First Lutheran in Westboro. The first item addressed was the election of Officers.

Jeff Hallstrand was elected as the Parish Council Presi-

dent. Butch Dahlke was elected as Vise President.

Becky Heikkinen was elected as the Secretary.

The second item discussed was the Parish name. There

were some concerns that the name may lead some

people to believe that our Parish would be confused

with the United in Christ Church. Our discussion ended

with the council deciding to keep the name temporari-

ly, until we can get further input. Four other names

were suggested and the name most liked by the council

was “Northwoods STaR Lutheran Parish.” The name is

extremely important and must be final before the

council can move forward. If anyone has any sugges-

tions or concerns, PLEASE contact Pastor Rick, Warren

Carlson or Butch Dahlke. The council will address final-

izing the name at our next meeting.

Next topic addressed was the initial start up budget.

Those monies need to be in an account before July 1st

of this year. This way the first month’s monies will be

in place for the initial start up. All agreed this needs to

be done before July 1st.

Our next topic was of our tax (EIN) number. The

council agreed that we need to get one, but postponed

it until we get the name of the Parish firmed up. Get-

ting a bank account set up was also discussed but was

also deferred until the name is finalized.

We discussed having a treasurer. The council did not

anticipate the treasurer’s position would account for

more than 10 hours per month. The council decided to

ask those church treasurers already in place first, before

searching any further.

The final topic of a coordinated website for the Parish

was discussed. Several ideas’ were discussed and will be

addressed in the near future.

Our next meeting is scheduled for March 26th at First

Lutheran in Prentice at 6:00pm. Butch Dahlke

CROSSROADS

Confession Betrayal Judgement Compassion Declaration Obedience

Many of those involved in the story of the Passion of Christ came to a crossroads and had to decide

which way to go. Some chose well, some did not, and the stories of each of these experiences at various cross-

roads help us to know what to do and what not to do when we encounter similar crossroads in our own lives.

In the end, each service in the series reveals in some way how Christ and his cross lead us to decide the path of

God’s will for us.

At The Crossroads Lenten devoonal books are available at the church…..

Please consider becoming a teacher for our Wednesday a@ernoon CYF program for

the 2017-2018 school year.

Teachers are urgently needed !! Without teachers we will not be able to offer this

program to area kids.

Talk to Pastor Rick if you would like more informaon about the program or feel it is

the right me for you to get more involved by teaching . No experience needed!!

Updates are always welcomed and

appreciated at the church office.

People move, or their kids grow

up and move out, and it’s easy to

forget how important it is to up-

date their address and vital infor-

mation with the church.

Some may have joined a new

church family also.

There are many people in our

Shepherd’s Staff System by their

maiden name, and still at their

parents address. In this program

people are set up in households

and then each person is listed sep-

arately. When a child moves out

then there should be a new house-

hold set up with new information.

Please call the office, put a note

in the collection plate or send an

email, I’m always happy to hear

Hey USC kids, because you also Aco-

lyte I am asking that you also come

and polish our candle scks, offering

plates etc., before Easter Sunday.

Please let me know when you would

have me. It’s easy and even

fun….plus there might be a snack

involved if it’s a@er school……

Call 715-428-2575, Thanks!

Don’t forget to sign up to provide soup,

bread or dessert for our soup sup-

pers…….sheet is in the back of the

church or call the office.

And please come for the Lenten services

and the food and fellowship following.
