Shoe ShotMusharraf, in his motherland, oozing nostalgia for the

good old days when his word was sharper than shrapnel, did not imagine that he would be targeted by an untrainedshoe thrower who missed his target by a mile.

‘Allah!’, he uttered in utter dismay at the state of the newgeneration of Pakistanis who cannot throw a miserableshoe at a former President, that too a General! After a brieftear-wiping session, he was told by his henchmen that themissile thrower was a lawyer! That was the icing on thecake of shame for Mushy who mourned the fall in thestandard of the profession of law all over the world and nowmanifested right before his hawk eyes that had sentshivers down the bodies of the Indian soldiers in the Kargilwar zone when he was younger and full of fire!

An aide whispered to him that, though the art of warfareis not a part of the curriculum in Indian law colleges, itsnuances are learnt by students through periodic visits tothe courts - especially the criminal courts - where the finerpoints in the forensic battles are imbibed by those forwhom no holds are barred in the march towards profes-sional success. The trainee law aspirant, aiming not at thesize of his bank account but at a honest fistful of rice andsambar, plods his weary way, sometimes not even beingable to afford to buy a pair of shoes to bung at publicenemies like friend Mushy or our own home grown frauds. The line of action is thin between the shoe-thrower and theshoeless plodder, but my vote goes to the s.plodder than tothe s.thrower!
