Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) is a kind of blending asphalt that is used in asphalt mixture,

this kind of asphalt has proven to have suitable viscosity, so it can be mixed and used in

lower temperatures. Based on the current technology, the temperature of mixing WMA is

usually between 120~140 , For paving and compacting the pavement the temperature

is normally between 90~120 . Compared with hot asphalt mixture (HMA), the

temperature of the mixture during construction can be reduced with about 30 , and still

have the same characteristics as HMA when used.

In general, WMA is appropriate for various mixtures with different gradation. The change of the gradation has a direct influence on the embedded force among aggregates of the mixtures, which can affect the road performance of the mixture.

As a case of AC-13, according to the test method given by the norm of Ministry of Communication Highway

Engineering Asphalt and Asphalt Mixture Test Rules JTJ052-2000, the evaluation of the properties of EC WMA is made

and just for reference. Heavy traffic 70 Grade A petroleum asphalt is adopted, and the dosage of EC WMA agent is 3.5%.

The aggregate coming from Shenzhen Furong Quarry is diabase. The optimum oil-stone ratio given by Marshall test

is 4.6%, and the grading curve is shown in the right figure

According to the above test result, each index of the asphalt mixture with 3.5% EC WMA agent, prepared by

Marshall residual stability test, split strength ratio test, rutting dynamic stability test, is not only better than the

requirements of Highway Asphalt Pavement Construction Technical Specification JTGF40-2004, but the rutting

dynamic stability enhances by a large margin as well. In the meantime, the mixing and compaction temperature is

dramatically reduced, and the aim of saving energy and reducing emissions is achieved.

Firstly, adding different specification cold aggregates to drying cylinder according to definite proportion( it was

confirmed by lab, accord with a certain gradation), the mixing carried out by normal mixing technology and the drying

temperature of aggregates is 140 150 , then injected it into already heated 150-160 asphalt, meanwhile, adding the

EC120 to mixing tank according to certain proportion the mixing time will increase 3s to 5s, until it mix homogeneous

without gray material.(Discharge temperatare 125 135 )

Preheat the ironing board of spreading machine to 100 and spread slowly equably and continuously, the spreading

speed is 2-3m/min. the initial temperature is 115 125 , the final temperature should not lower than 90 100 , until

meeting the requirements of compaction degree of the roads.

High-performance Thin Overlays. Owing to the good workability and compaction of WMA, it can solve the problem,

which is difficult to be compacted leaded by the temperature reduction of thin overlays

A high amount of recycled mixture can be reused. By applying the technology of WMA, it can reduce the temperature of

discharging, so more than 40% of recycled material can be added, it can also reach the temperature of discharging.

Therefore, it can increase the amount of recycled asphalt mixture used in the mixture.

High-level environment protection municipal road. The emissions of pollution can be reduced by more than 30% when

WMA is used. Suitable usage areas are residential areas, hospital and roads connected with scenic areas.

Asphalt pavement for tunnels. During the construction of tunnels, dust from the asphalt mixture is difficult to decrease

and the working temperature in construction sites is too high. When using WMA, this problem is solved efficient.
