Lyophilise.com offers a wide
range of freeze-dried, wet and self-heating meals, snacks, packs and utensils available in store or online. These products are suitable for all your adventures and all situations where food self-sufficiency is called for.
The differences between freeze-dried and wet products (ready-to-eat products)?
Freeze-drying is a procedure which produces a dried product. Not to be confused with dehydrated products ! Indeed, Freeze-drying works by freezing the material which enable to retain up to 99 % of flavour and micronutrients while dehydration uses hot dry air which can involve the loss of 10 to 50 % of the taste and nutritional qualities. Freeze-dried products are ultra light and require a rehydration (100g of freeze dried food weighs around 400 to 650g after having been rehydrated).
Wet products are vacuum packed meals which don’t require any rehydration, they are ready to eat. They are heavier and have to be heat in a boiling water bath or thanks to a self-heating heat pack.
How to explain the price difference between the brands?
Some brands chose to freeze- dry the ingredients separately
and to mix them after to make a meal.
Other brands prepare the meals before
freeze drying them. Therefore the flavor
of the recipe is preserved and the time
invested is more important.
Besides, the bigger the pieces of food
are the more expensive the freeze-
drying process becomes for the brands
(freeze-drying uses a lot of energy).
These two factors have a direct impact
on the price.
