Lyonsdown News - 19th October 2018 From the Headmaster’s Desk The end of the first half term of the academic year is upon us and, as the School prepares to go on holiday for a fortnight, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are also enjoying me away, on their official tour of Oceania. A change of scene is important, and one I hope you are able to enjoy with family or friends over the next two weeks. Only yesterday, Prince Harry and Meghan talked about the importance of recreaon in relaon to mental health, a topic we are focusing on at Lyonsdown aſter half term. I hope you will be able to join us on Tuesday 13 th November, when Cat Williams will be speaking to parents about wellbeing at 7pm, following similar sessions with pupils and staff. Do sign up if you have not already done so. The Royals will also visit the Invictus Games, to promote the fact that a healthy body is equally important as a healthy mind. A healthy diet is part of this and I hope you daughter or son has told you about the new dishes that have been on the lunch menu this term, including a variety of vegetable cakes. As part of our on-going improvements to our catering provision, I am also pleased to announce that the School now has its meat supplied by a local family butchers, Moore and Sons. Our Open Morning was a huge success (and, incidentally, a chance for pupils to say how much they loved their food), as the School welcomed a multude of prospecve parents. We are always parcularly proud of our Year 6 tour guides on occasions such as these, as they show off the amazing array of teaching, learning and other acvies that take place at Lyonsdown. There were kind comments across the board, but one parent summed up their morning by saying “the lessons and the girls were amazing,” which I can enrely agree with. Aſter the break, our minds will turn to Remembrance Day, another theme of the Sussexes’ tour as they lay a memorial wreath in Fiji. This year, to mark the centenary of the Armisce at the end of the First World War, Lyonsdown warmly invites parents, grandparents and other family members to join us on the playground for a short Service of Remembrance on Wednesday 7 th November. Please see our earlier email for further details. So, a busy first half term over and the prospect of even more excitement and hard work aſter the break. All the best for a relaxing holiday. C. From the Headmaster’s Desk

The end of the first half term of the academic year is upon us and, as the School prepares to go on holiday for a fortnight, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are also enjoying time away, on their official tour of Oceania. A change of scene is important, and one I hope you are able to enjoy with family or friends over the next two weeks. Only yesterday, Prince Harry and Meghan talked about the importance of recreation in relation to mental health, a topic we are focusing on at Lyonsdown after half term. I hope you will be able to join us on Tuesday 13th November, when Cat Williams will be speaking to parents about wellbeing at 7pm, following similar sessions with pupils and staff. Our Open Morning was a huge success (and, incidentally, a chance for pupils to say how much they loved their food), as the School welcomed a multitude of prospective parents. We are always particularly proud of our Year 6 tour guides on occasions such as these, as they show off the amazing array of teaching, learning and other activities that take place at Lyonsdown. There were kind comments across the board, but one parent summed up their morning by saying “the lessons and the girls were amazing,” which I can entirely agree with. After the break, our minds will turn to Remembrance Day, another theme of the Sussexes’ tour as they lay a memorial wreath in Fiji. This year, to mark the centenary of the Armistice at the end of the First World War, Lyonsdown warmly invites parents, grandparents and other family members to join us on the playground for a short Service of Remembrance on Wednesday 7th November. Reception visit the Lyonsdown garden

The children spotted minibeasts such as woodlice, spiders and slugs. With snack time beckoning they spotted blackberries and apples and were intrigued by the Brussels sprouts.

Reception visit Greenhill Gardens

Mrs Murphie led our excited children on their first Reception outing: an autumnal walk. They observed the trunks of trees and the varieties of their leaves, the sunshine dancing on the pond and the splendour of the ducks.

Our grateful thanks go to Katerina’s, Xanthe’s, Nikki’s and Niyanni’s mothers for accompanying Reception.

Year 2 This week Year 2 have been looking at 2D shapes. The children have learnt the names of the most common 2D shapes and have explored how many sides and corners they have. They then got a chance to use some 2D shapes to make their own robots! Year 2 especially enjoyed making 2D shapes using elastic bands and geo boards. Well done, Year 2. Mrs Hall and Miss Telford

Year 3 We had a lovely time at the Chiltern Open Air Museum on Wednesday. The children took part in a Stoneage Workshop, which was great fun and very informative. We met the ‘Chief’, who had the girls making shelters, preparing to hunt, making bracelets and the highlight, making fire. Although the steel and flint was a little post-stoneage, they did very well. Bear Grills better watch out!

After lunch we met an archaeologist and the girls took part in activities centred on artefacts and what is done with them to help us understand the past. Examining ancient ‘poo’ to see what people had been eating was a highlight.

This week Year 5 created their own water cycle using a Pyrex bowl, boiling water and some cling film! Pupils watched carefully as the water evaporated, rose, cooled and condensed. Finally, it fell as rain (precipitation) into the sea of the glass bowl below. Mrs Brighton

ISA REGIONAL ART COMPETITION 2018

Last Thursday, the exciting annual ISA Regional Art Competition for both primary and secondary schools took place in Waltham Abbey. Twenty-three schools took part in the competition, with a total of 386 entries being displayed across a variety of categories, including 2D Art, Drawing, Photography, 3D Art, Textiles, Fashion and Sketchbooks. The two highly experienced judges were extremely impressed with the outstanding standard of work which filled the display boards and tables and, my head was full of wonderful new ideas and techniques to teach our Lyonsdown children.

We have some fantastic young artists here at Lyonsdown and I am very proud to announce that we had six first prize winners, four second prizes and four highly commended pieces of work. I was particularly pleased that Lyonsdown did so well in the areas of 3D Art and Fashion this year. Computer Club

Computer Club has been a very busy place this term. There are lots of fun activities to try, either working collaboratively or alone. Computing skills are improving generally and after half term we are expecting to try some coding games as well. Monster Mingle and painting have been very popular lately.

Well done to everyone.

Mrs Everett

Artist of the Week Congratulations Anya (Year 3)

Year 3 pupils have been investigating the work of the

artist, Pablo Picasso. They have studied paintings he

created during his ‘Blue period,’ when he was feeling

sad. They learned that colours can show emotions in

art. Anya used a variety of different blue media to

make this beautiful collage, inspired by Picasso’s

painting, ‘The Old Guitarist’. This is an eye catching

piece of work in his style. Well done.

Sports On Thursday 18th October, Lyonsdown attended a Primary Schools Cross Country Meet organised by the Barnet Sports Partnership. It was a dry and sunny afternoon which meant perfect running conditions across the fields, with each runner running an approximate distance of one mile. Two Lyonsdown pupils participated in each race, which had approximately 60-70 runners from different local Barnet schools. The results are as follows:

Year 4 Morayo 23rd Aliki 28th

Year 6 Poppy 32nd Anna 34th

Year 5 Emilia 8th Isabelle 20th

Well done to all of the girls and thank you to the parents who came and supported our team! Miss Doyle and Miss Sherwood

Lyonsdown Motto Competition

Now that a poster has been designed to represent Lyonsdown Learning, we are now looking for a motto. We want you to design a short, clever motto which represents all of the Lyonsdown Learning habits: independence, creativity, perseverance, curiosity, collaboration and reflection. The due date is Friday 23rd November at 9am. Good luck!

Kathleen, Lyonsdown Learning Prefect

As a nation, this year we are commemorating the centenary of the Armistice of the First World War, which falls on Remembrance Sunday, 11th November.

Every November at Lyonsdown, we remember The Fallen with an assembly, wearing poppies and a two minute silence. This year, parents, grandparents and other family members are welcome to join with us on the playground for a short 15 minute Service of Remembrance. The service will take place on Wednesday 7th November, beginning at 11am, and will include poetry, reflection, prayer and the playing of the Last Post, as well as the two minute silence. In the afternoon, Year 6 will be paying respects on behalf of the School at the New Barnet War memorial.

If you are able to attend, please arrive at the school playground gate by 10.50am on Wednesday 7th November.

Lyonsdown will also be supporting The Royal British Legion poppy appeal and poppies and other small items will be available to purchase in school during the first week back after half term. A suggested donation of £1 or more per item please.

Lyonsdown School: Christmas Shoebox

Appeal 2018

We are launching into a new venture for our Christmas shoebox charity this year. Link to Hope is a respected charity established in 1992 which works with disadvantaged people in Eastern Europe particularly Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine. They are small enough to have a personal relationship with all the key contacts who distribute the shoeboxes and they do spot checks to ensure that the boxes are received by the correct people. Their website address is: https://linktohope.co.uk/shoebox-appeal-2018

Link to Hope run a Family Shoebox Appeal whereby each shoebox is given to a family, not just a child. These families often have to make a choice between buying food or fuel at Christmas time – buying presents is just not a priority. Many do not have running water, heating or electricity. Some live in appalling conditions often in just one or two rooms, and life for them is a real struggle to survive. Due to the number of elderly people who are now alone because their families have left to work away, Link to Hope have also launched their Elder-ly Shoebox Appeal. These boxes are similar but the children’s items are replaced by a wind up torch, sensory items, candle holder, etc.

On Monday, Camilla Johnson from Link to Hope visited Lyonsdown and shared her insights of the charity’s work with our children during assembly. The leaflet you received today explains what can and cannot be sent.

Completed boxes can be brought to school at a time from now up until Tuesday 6th November 2018.

Lyonsdown School contributed over 100 boxes last year to our previous charity. Can we match or surpass that total this year? Our charity prefects will be standing by to receive them. With grateful thanks Mrs Gunn
