Municipal Waste Management Services pick up garbageTransported to Lycoming LandfillThe Lycoming Landfill is located on the Lycoming and Union counties lines. It collects most of central Pennsylvania towns trash from Sunbury and Williamsport2AccessibilityLocated on Route 159 miles south of Williamsport25 miles north of Sunbury

maps.google.comRoute 15 is an important road in central Pennsylvania. Makes it easy for the trash to be transported from Central Pennsylvania towns to landfill3 Aerial View of Lycoming Landfillmaps.google.com

The left side of Route 15 is currently in the process of being filledThe landfill will start dumping trash on the right side of the road after the left side is filledThe lower left corner is the Cogeneration PlantThe bare ground on the left side of Route 15 is currently a mountain of trash. The right side is currently being dug into so it can start receiving trash. Co-generation plant produces energy for the landfill from landfill gas (This is explained in more detail later in the PowerPoint).4BackgroundLandfill opened in 1978179.9 acres of permitted landReceives trash from Montour, Lycoming, Northumberland, Columbia, and Union CountiesLandfill receives about 1,100 tons per day

Background information on the landfill5Double-lined LagoonA lagoon system is located at the bottom of a landfill, which collects garbage fluid called leachateLycoming Landfill uses a double-lined lagoonLagoon system has municipal waste, dirt and rocks placed on top of itGovernment has very strict regulations because of potential groundwater contamination

Dirt rocks and trash will cover the double-lined lagoon. Lagoon systems are inspected by the Environmental Protection Agency. The government is very strict about this because of groundwater contamination. 6LeachateLeachate is the fluid that collects at the bottom of the landfillLeachate is collected and pumped to Montgomery Sewage Treatment Plant, which is pictured belowLeachate poses a threat to the environmentGroundwater is monitored regularly to check for contaminants

montgomeryborough.org Leachate is the garbage juice collected at the bottom of a landfill. Leachate is stopped by a double-lines lagoon to stop groundwater contamination and other environment hazards. Picture of the Montgomery Sewage Treatment Plant7Landfill GasGarbage produces 50% methane gas and 50% CO2Started flaring gas in 1988Produces energyLandfillSurrounding communityPPL

They flare gas to minimize the bad smell of the Lycoming landfill. Landfill gas is important because it produces energy for the landfill, PPL and the surrounding community. They also sell energy to PPL. 8Cogeneration Plant

www.lyco.orgHere is the Cogeneration plant at the Lycoming Landfill plant. The two tall pipes flare off the gas. The flames at night are blue because of the methane. Generate the energy used for the landfill, community and PPL9

ztr.comHere is an example of how gas is captured from the landfill and transported by a pipe system to Cogeneration plant. The ending result is the methane gas reaching customers to be used as energy. The landfill is producing energy to sell to PPL and the community

10Transfer StationSunbury has transfer stations that collect residential waste, tires, drywall, construction and scrap metalWaste is transferred directly to the Lycoming LandfillHere is a transfer station in Northumberland County

There are drop off transfer stations in Sunbury to minimize the environment concern for illegal dumping. Cuts down on gas emissions and can save the community money. The waste is directly transferred to the Lycoming Landfill.11Sourcesmaps.google.com"Lycoming County." lyco.org. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 Apr. 2012. . McKibben, Craig. Williamsport Sun Gazette.
