Uzeyir Hajibayov

Uzeyir Hajibayov (Hajibayli), a composer of genius, one of the most remarkable personalities of Azerbaijan professional music and the founder of the national opera art.

He was born in Shusha, graduated from Gori Teachers’ Training Seminary, attended musical courses in Moscow, continued his musical education at St. Petersburg Conservatoire.

 The greatest masterpiece of Uzeyir Hajibayov It was composed in 1906-1907 laying the

foundation of the Opera Art in Azerbaijan. It was staged on the 12th of January,1908. It consisted of classical folklore - mugams.

During the period 1908-1915, he composed the operas “Sheikh Sanan”, ”Rustam and Zohrab”, “Shah Abbas and Xurshud Banu”,“Harun and Leyla”, “Koroglu”

He became very famous for his satirical articles, essays.

As a newspaper satirist he used pen-names “Filankas”, “Xoca Lala” “Behmankas”,”Choban”,”Bizbiza”,etc.

“The life of Uzeyir ” is the film devoted to his busy,

and interesting life, his prominent musical activity.

Prominent teacher and thinker

Uzeyir Hajibayov worked as a Maths teacher after graduating Gori Seminary.

In 1907 he published his Arithmetic-book with 352 sums for 8-9 year- old - students.

He said: “I intend to make our students think, discuss, express their thoughts and prove them in practice.”

Memorable Coins Uzeyir Hajibayov’s anniversary was a great event not onlyin our country but also in many countries of the world.According to the list of well-known people and importantevents of the world, in 1985 UNESCO gave a start to theanniversary celebrations.

These are gold coins made in honour of his 100th anniversary in 1992-2010.

He died in 1948 leaving his richest treasure in music,

comedy, dramatic art, journalism and other spheres of Literature and Art.

Every year on the 18th of September, in the square of the National Conservatoire, the orchestra plays his prominent musical works, in memory of Uzeyir Hajibayov, one of the most outstanding figures of Azerbaijan.
