    LUXURY TRAINS

    INTRODUCTION

Luxury trains are special trains designed specifically to offer a sumptuous yet eleganttrain ride, and evoke a strong sense of association as in history, heritage and decadence of aleisure ride. Luxury trains operate in several countries and offer a luxurious andcomfortable traveling option to the luxury travelers. Whereas some luxury trains offerwhirlwind tour across major destinations of a country/area other trains take the guest on along leisure ride, cutting across state borders.

Nowadays there is an increase in the trend of luxury train travel around the world. Luxurytrain travel has several advantages over travel on airplanes. Whereas during air travel themonotony of the journey is occasionally broken by the view of clouds, hovering here andthere, through the plane's window, a winding luxury ride on board the trains providesample opportunity to the guests to witness the myriad colors of the places they are travelingto.

There are a number of reasons for the growing popularity of the luxury trains over airtravel, which includes ample space, restaurants and bars, spacious and comfortable sleepingand seating area and even wash/bath rooms. Since the time of introduction of Pioneer in1864 by American industrialist George Mortimer Pullman, luxury train travel has come along way.

    HISTORY

In the past, train travel was quite an uncomfortable experience. Without sleeping anddining cars, long distance traveling used to be a harrowing experience. Things changedwhen Pioneer was introduced by Pullman in 1864.

In 1867, "Hotel Cars" were introduced. Pioneer was the first railway carriage to introducedining cars and sleeping cars in train leading to more comfort during travelling especially along distance journey.

Pullman Car Company was founded in 1880and was one of the leading luxury passenger

    railroad car providers.

Another person credited with the beginning of the luxury train travel was GeorgesNagelmackers, founder of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons - Lits. Inspired by thePullman trains during his America visit, Nagelmackers returned to Europe and built a fleetof over 30 luxury trains which offered luxury train travel across several destinations inEurope. He is credited with the beginning of the age of luxury trains and grand hotels.

Since the dawn of the age of luxury trains, the most famous and revered luxury train isperhaps the legendary Orient Express immortalized by Agatha Christie in her bookMurder on the Orient Express. Orient Express happens to be the first luxury train in

Europe. It embarked on its maiden journey on 5 June 1883 from Paris Gare de l'Est acrossEurope. Today the Orient Express not only provides luxury train travel across Europe butseveral destinations around the globe. Besides Orient Express a number of privateoperators as well as joint ventures between government parties and private tour operatorsare providing luxury train travel options in several countries.

    7/48

The Palace On Wheels started as a unique holiday train hauled by a steam engine with itsinaugural trip on 26th January, 1982. It started to roll on its regular operations fromOctober 1982.

It was in the eighties when Indian Railway and Rajasthan Tourism decided to worktogether on a project to resurrect some of these forgotten symbols of its historic heritage.Thirteen carriages from different princely states were brought together and refurbished, andthe Palace on Wheels was launched.

A superb train that evoked the past with modern facilities and created a journey that was onoffer to people around the world-wannabe princes who could be royals for their week of

    the journey.

For, along with the restored carriages-some still glowing with their original teakwoodpanels intact-came liveried attendants, royal repasts from the attached kitchen, a lounge, and a dining car.

The Palace on Wheels had become so popular and there is and would always be resistanceto any move to discontinue it. The result was a spanking new train that faithfully recreatedthe old one, but much more comfortable, and intended to provide a smoother ride.

This was significantly lower than the recorded tiger population ofthe reserve in 1982, which then stood at 44. In 2008, more than 14 tiger cubs wererecorded. This was largely attributed to sustained efforts by forest officials to curbpoaching. Villagers in the region were being given incentives to stay out of the park andsurveillance cameras were also fitted across the reserve. The Indian government alsocommitted US$153 million for the efforts. These efforts have been successful withRanthambore having enough tigers to participate in the Sariska Tiger Reserve relocationefforts.Back to train for Breakfast.

complex of exquisite palaces, gardens and courtyards, decorative art and carved doorways. The palace museumhouses collections of rare manuscripts, armoury, costumes, carpets and miniature paintings.

Jaipur's Jantar Mantar is the most famous of five observatories built by Sawai Jai Singh

in India. Jai Singh was a great admirer of progresses and research made in the fields ofscience and technology, but he was passionate about astronomy. There is a very interestingstory behind the construction of this observatory, considered as the largest stoneobservatory in the world. Sawai Jai Singh sent his emissaries to all parts of the worldbefore commencing the construction of this observatory. The emissaries returned withmany manuals on astronomy containing cutting-edge technological information. One ofthese manuals was a copy of La Hire's "Tables". The king ordered the observatory to bebuilt according to the details contained in this manual. When the construction ended, forthe astonishment of the king and others, the observatory was 20 seconds more accuratethan the one mentioned in "Table.

In the afternoon after lunch proceed forcapital of Amber to see the fabulous Amber Fort.

Maharaja Mansingh, Mughal Emperor Akbars most successful General, started theconstruction of Amber Fort in the 17th century. Before the City Palace was constructed inJaipur, Amber was the seat of power. The fort is surrounded by fortified battlements andoverlooks the Moat Lake. Ruins and remains are spread over the Aravalli hills andsprawling crenulated walls lattice the surrounding area.

Jeeps will spare you the trouble of reaching up to the fortress. Once on top, stroll throughthe sprawling complex of courtyards and halls. Many of the rooms have delightful wallpaintings, with precious stones and mirrors inlaid in the walls. Most fascinating, perhaps, isthe Sheesh Mahal (hall of mirrors) where a single lamplight is reflected in the manymirrors, lighting up the room.

En-route to Amber Fort you will stop and see the `Palace of Winds, otherwise known asHawa Mahal. It is really an elaborate facade behind which the ladies of the court used towatch the daily goings on in the street below. It is extremely intricate in its pink sandstonecarving.
