Daleham Gardens is situated on the southern slopes of Hampstead,

running north from Belsize Lane to Lyndhurst Road. There are

good local shops and restaurants less than 200 metres away in

Belsize Village, whilst the cosmopolitan Hampstead Village is also

close by.

Schools: The house is ideally situated for several of the area’s

highly regarded independent schools:

South Hampstead (girls, 4 to 18 years), Devonshire House (mixed,

2 to 13 years), North Bridge House (mixed, 2 to 13 years), The Hall

(boys, 4 to 13 years) and University College School (boys, 7 to 18

years). Many children in the area travel daily to some of the best

schools in England: Westminster, City of London, Haberdashers’

and North London Collegiate. Two international schools are also

nearby, The Southbank International School in Maresfield Gardens

and the American School London in St John’s Wood.

Transport: The house has the advantage of being within a short

walking distance of public transport links. It is between Swiss

Cottage Underground Station (Jubilee Line, for the West End and

Canary Wharf) which is less than 500 metres walk and Belsize

Park (Northern Line, for the City and St Pancras International)

which is approximately 800 metres. A similar distance away

at Finchley Road station, the London Overground has trains to

Stratford (Olympic Park and Westfield Shopping Centre) and links

to Gatwick and Luton Airports.

Daleham Gardens is named after a 15th

Century house on the Sussex estate

of the former Lord of the Manor of

Hampstead, Spencer Maryon Wilson.

The handsome Victorian houses at the

southern end of the road were built

in the 1880s by the firm of Herbert

& Edward Kelly. Victory House was

the former home of John Bowlby, the

eminent child psychologist, psychiatrist

and psychoanalyst, notable for his

interest in child development and his

pioneering work on attachment theory.

ironwork:The original ironwork has been the

inspiration for the drama of the new.

Following removal from site, the best

of the fine Victorian metalwork was

retained, restored and, where necessary,

new sections were fabricated by hand to

replace pieces beyond repair.

The extensive contemporary ironwork

throughout the house is designed by the

celebrated Blacksmith James Horrobin

and hand-made at the Doverhay Forge

(makers of the Churchill Memorial

Screen at St Paul’s). Using the original

language of the restored Victorian

metalwork for his inspiration, James

Horrobin has created beautiful designs

that are wonderfully intricate.

From the seamless and elegant principal

staircase, with its cool LED lighting, to

the front gates which open at the touch

of a button, the ironwork is a powerful

marriage of traditional and modern.

Even the antique radiators have been

retained and painstakingly modernised.

Elegantly decorative, they have been

completely renovated and skilfully

reconstructed, so that they are an

integral and efficient part of the modern

heating system.

Throughout the house, all the fine

fireplaces are original, apart from in the

dining room. Here a striking modern

fireplace has been installed, designed by

Foster Lomas architects and a leading

granite specialist.

GlAss:The glass used throughout the house

is by Firman Glass, one of the most

innovative glass companies in the

world, who built the spectacular all

glass staircase for Apple’s London

flagship store. In Daleham Gardens

Firman have been actively involved on

the project from conception through

to completion, creating stunning and

unique glass designs.

liGhtinG:A beautifully lit environment was

fundamental to the architect’s design.

During the day the house takes full

advantage of its southerly aspect.

Large windows flood the interior with a

vast amount of daylight. Strategically

designed light wells, and a reflective

pool, bathe the garden floor in

soothing natural light. After dark, the

computer controlled lighting system

allows a multitude of moods. Small

energy efficient LED light sources

are discreetly integrated into the

architectural elements. Decorative

lighting fittings, such as chandeliers,

provide additional light and become

focal features in principal rooms.

wood:Marquetry: The drawing room floor

is made of English oak, caramelised

in France. It is an exact copy of the

original handcut floor that was beyond

restoration. Ardern Hodges, a leading

flooring company, collaborated with

the architect and marquetry craftsmen

to develop a new technique to create

“the impossible”. Laser guided saws

were programmed to cut the template

and inlay, yielding the same handmade

design as before, but with computer

controlled perfection. Each section

is also layered cross grain against

the other giving the floor a stunning,

intricate pattern with wonderful colour

variation that will have greater longevity

than the original.

Panelling: The bespoke dining room

panelling is hand carved in oak by

English craftsmen. The beautiful

detailing is particularly evident round

the dining room door, in the egg and

dart chair rail, the acanthus flower

carving and the hand carved mirror

surround. In order not to compromise

the original cross-beamed ceiling plaster,

the central chandelier was omitted.

Instead the room is lit by concealed

cove fittings above the panelling which

illuminates the ceiling for dinner.

As in the rest of the house, the dining

room is fully equipped for music, but the

speakers have been cleverly disguised

as panels within the walls. Also hidden

is a bar with a built-in fridge.

On the garden floor, Ardern Hodges

have laid bespoke limed oak which

has a more contemporary feel and

compliments the modern architecture

and clean lines of the space.

stone:Throughout the house the art of the

stonemason is evident, from the hand

carved bathroom basins, cut from the

same slab as the floor, to the bath

cut from a huge matching slab of

travertine. This is craftsmanship of

the finest order using materials such

as Balzac limestone which will always

be a delight to behold.
