The Palace hotel is exceptional in more ways than one

Through its history, its location overlooking the ocean at the end of Biarritz Grande Plage beachfront, and through the fact that it belongs to a small family of some of the most prestigious hotels in the world.

Villa Eugénie becomes a luxury hotelIt was out of pure love for his wife Eugénie of Montijo that Emperor Napoleon III constructed Villa Eugénie in 1854.As the primary monument in Biarritz, Villa Eugénie became a hotel in 1893 and offers lovers of luxury and lifestyle the chance to partake in a piece of history in a location which has kept its soul whilst retaining tradition. Luxury furnishings, Empire couches, rose marble columns and crystal chandeliers all await in the lobby. From a painting, the Empress Eugénie will accompany you as you climb the grand master staircase to one of the 124 room in the hotel. Romy Schneider, Hemingway, Alphonse XIII… Each of the 30 suites bears witness to a prestigious past in the hotel. The majority of these have retained their furnishings dating back to the Second Empire. For those who prefer a more contemporary style, you will marvel on the top floor: with "porthole" windows overlooking the ocean and luxury wooden gangways, the rooms take on the allure of luxury ship cabins.

An imperial spa covering some 3000 m2 over five floorsOpened in 2006, the hotel spa received the 2008 Villégiature award as the best spa in Europe, and was nominated as the "Best spa in Europe and the Mediterranean" by Condé Nast Johansens. It was designed around an immaculate indoor heated swimming pool with a Jacuzzi and counter-current, you can admire the ocean waves. Reserved solely for use by hotel guests, the spa also has two saunas, two Turkish baths, a cardio-fitness centre all overlooking the ocean and a tea bar.The Hôtel du Palais has received no end of awards. The Hôtel du Palais (5 star) is part of the prestigious Colbert Group. The hotel has joined the likes of the George V, the Bristol and the Ritz amongst the 70 luxury hotels in the Colbert Group.

Internationally-renowned Biarritz chefsNo stay is complete without a good restaurant. The fame of the chefs largely exceeds the borders of Biarritz and the Basque Country.Jean-Marie Gautier at Villa Eugénie (Hôtel du Palais). Jean-Marie Gautier has been chef at the Hôtel du Palais since 1991, and serves up a sophisticated and inventive cuisine at «La Villa Eugénie», gourmet restaurant which has 1 Michelin Star. Local products from the ocean and the Basque Country form the basis of the wide variety of dishes, which can be enjoyed in the cosy setting where immense chandeliers illuminate the white walls with golden mouldings, and where the interlaced initials of Napoleon and Eugénie are reminiscent of the first occupants of the premises…

Unearthingthe secrets ofthe Périgord Black Truffle

Known as the Périgord black truffle, the Tuber melanosporum can be harvested from thefirst frosts in November until late February/early March. This fungus has two particularities: it grows underground and lives in symbiosis with a tree variety (oak, chestnut, pine, etc.).Its exceptional organoleptic qualities, along with its rarity, make the truffle one of the most costly food products in the world: depending on the quality and year, a kilo of truffles can be sold for anywhere between 500 and 1000 Euros !

Sorges, capital of the black truffleSorges is known by food lovers, the world over, as the capital of the Tuber melanosporum. Ripe for harvesting after the first frosts, the Périgord black truffle is the most aromatic of the 70 species of truffle existing in the world; it requires a special technique for harvesting using a "truffle-sniffing" animal, often a dog. Local production runs from January at the markets in Périgueux, Excideuil, Sainte-Alvère and Sarlat. In Sorges, a truffle market is held each year on the last Sunday in January. It attracts swathes of people and an in-creasing number of Europeans, Chinese and Russians, etc.

Introduction to the "Black Diamond" at the Truffle EcomuseumSorges has dedicated a unique Ecomuseum to its black diamond. Head off to discover the Truffle Trail - a fun-filled itinerary which introduces you to the characteristic plants and trees which are home to truffles - and learn everything you need to know about truffles and their culture.

Tasting at the Auberge de la TruffeHotelcert certified, and a member of Logis de France with a three star rating for food and accommodation, the Auberge de la Truffe opens its doors to its sophisticated rooms and mini-suites, and gives you the chance to celebrate, in the capital of the black truffle, this blessed fungus. Here, truffles are the building blocks of a gourmet tradition, as well as the object of a passion which chef Pierre Corre loves to share with his guests, notably through his "truffle menu" (€110 /person excluding beverages) : from a consommé with grated truffle to the truffle pastry for dessert, indulge in the subtle, yet unforgettable aromas of the "black diamond" of the Périgord.Pierre Corre also organises stays on the theme of truffles and foie gras: "the melody of the seven scents", seven days in the Périgord Blanc with cookery classes (and notably a cookery class focussing in truffles with a visit to the Truffle Ecomuseum), and weekends or three day visits to discover the world of truffles. Price for the "melody of the seven scents": €900 /pers excluding wine or €1000 /pers. including wine (includes cookery classis and full-board accommodation - not including visits).

From the Bordeaux "Triangle" to the old roads of Biarritz as frequented by the Royal Families, and the chic stores in Pau, Aquitaine is a shop window for a whole host of luxury brands. The region is also home to many treasures made by artisans in the region whose reputation is well worthy of a visit. Make the most of your stay to discover areas brimming in charm, and between two shopping trips, enjoy the regional gastronomy.

Biarritz, Bordeaux, Pau: Some useful addresses of luxury brandsIn Bordeaux, the most prestigious shops and stores in the city are located within the "Triangle" which is delimited by the Cours de l’Intendance, Cours Georges Clémenceau and Allées de Tourny. You can simply stroll around the Place des Grands Hommes to discover some of the finest luxury brands: Mauboussin, Cartier, Georges Rech, Apostrophe, J.M. Weston, Wolford, Sonia Rykiel, Hugo Boss, Robert Clergerie, Longchamp, Gérard Darel, Maje, Escada, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Lancel, Max Mara, Mac Douglas, and so on.Head off to Biarritz and the streets spanning out from Place Clémenceau. In the last century, whilst Biarritz was already the favoured location of the major Royal Families, the European aristocracy and the elite, there was already, just a stone's throw from the ocean, some of the finest jewellers, fashion designers and restaurants. Today at Place Clémenceau, you will fall for a wonderful item of jewellery from Amestoy or Garoste, before walking down Avenues Edouard VII and Maréchal Foch to see some of the finest brands in fashion and leather goods: Sonia Rykiel, Hermès, Hervé Chapelier, Max Mara…Still in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, but further inland, why not visit Pau. Rues Henri IV, Serviez, Latapie, Barthou or Foch have all of the most popular ready-to-wear brands and accessories, home decoration and table art stores: you will also find watches and jewellery by Chaumet, Hermès, Jaeger-Lecoultre or Rolex at Arnautou, and can stop off at Georges Rech or Max Mara.

In Dordogne : Repetto ballerina shoes at crazy pricesIt was in 1967 that Rose Repetto set up the hub of manufacturing Repetto ballerina shoes in Saint-Médard d’Excideuil, in Dordogne. The brand is famous for being worn by the "small rats" in the Opera, as well as Brigitte Bardot who wore these in "And God created woman". In the 70s, Serge Gainsbourg then fell under the spell of Zizi, the model created for Zizi Jeanmaire. Still today, the factory at Saint-Médard d’Excideuil is the location where the tips and ballerina shoes are manufactured in line with the "sewn-back" method. Several times a year, the factory organises sales at cut prices on previous collections (over 50% off for some models).
